Love Island - 'porny' sort of cattlemarket at heart?

I know 'Love Island' is all the rage.

I've dipped into it, probably tired, late at night, curious to see young people and swimming pools and sun, mindless chat etc .... and what all the fuss is about ...

But last night it made me feel uncomfortable. All the young women - dressed in a way the more revealing the better. Its all about "fit" for the men it seems at the lowest level (often if not always). Sometimes the women but you can see they are struggling too - playing "the market". The worst was somehow young woman put with an "ex" she knew outside (who she'd obviously been hurt by - yeah he was just playing the field at the time and now felt "awkward" she was back on the scene. Will she get angry and hysterical because she was treated badly by lazy lothario, and then be dismissed as a crazy madwoman? Its all looking predictable).

It all feels sad and a bit grim?

OH said its not love Island more like fuck Island I have to agree with him Grin

boboboobs1 · 30/06/2018 08:19

I actually really like it ☺️ but I do find it depressing, eg how all the boys think the girl with the most plastic surgery & dubious personality is the hottest. Now whether this is because they like the look or because they think she’s more likely to “put out” it’s still depressing.

RunMummyRun68 · 30/06/2018 08:37

Yeah.....and all the girls like the abs on the boys

RunMummyRun68 · 30/06/2018 08:39

ifailed yes true.... but even at holiday resorts around the world people wear swimwear! Nobody 'covers up' .... is your average holiday resort just a meat market too then?

They don't live there, they are working and on holiday

I don’t watch it, but the clips I’ve seen on other shows is enough to put me off dating for life. Cattle market exactly. Fuck off Love Island.

Really surprised at some of the unthoughtful replies you’re getting here, OP. I think people are maybe being a bit blinded by the fact it’s really fun to watch (I admit to watching it obsessively too!) but it’s clearly troubling from a feminist perspective.

SlothSlothSloth · 30/06/2018 08:48

I don’t think that necessarily means don’t watch the show/don’t make it. It just means it’s not ridiculous to suggest the show could be open to a feminist critique.

I find it a fascinating show from a sociological perspective and how sexual politics has both changed and not changed over time.

Women aren’t vilified for their sexual behaviour (in a way that there was an outcry years ago when the first couple shagged on big brother) but equally the (so far) longest lasting couple are the ones who haven’t had sexual contact (Jack and Dani).

It’s interesting that in some ways I think the women are trying to use their sexual acts as a way to hold on to the men, and yet this clearly isn’t working - I wonder if this is a comment on the wider community (I don’t know, I’m middle aged!)

The one thing that mainly surprises me is that these beautiful women are chasing and fighting over the men - surely it should be the other way round, when I was their age it certainly was!

RunMummyRun68 · 30/06/2018 13:00

Why should men be 'fighting and chasing' though?

Ozgirl75 · 30/06/2018 15:57

I’ve always assumed men want to chase women rather than the other way round.

Ifailed · 30/06/2018 17:33

I’ve always assumed men want to chase women rather than the other way round.

Of course, women should just dress up and sit waiting demurely, waiting for a man to come along and sweep them of their feet, and giggle a lot, obviously.

Ozgirl75 · 30/06/2018 17:50

Yes that’s exactly what I meant Hmm

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 30/06/2018 18:30

It is proper car crash telly but I cannot help but love it, they are all very beautiful & it does concern me that this is what youngsters may aspire to but having said that the pics on Instagram etc are actually a far cry from the people round the pool prior to 3 hours of grooming...
Meghan looked a very normal average looking girl prior to the work she's had done & hopefully people can look past the tits to see how fake she & most of them really are.
Also Jacks ex asked to go in there apparently so hardly being taken advantage of is she? Hmm
