we've just had the discussion at work and have concluded that if the animal is stray/rescued/injured/unwanted etc and would be killed without an owner then this is OK, however if the animal has been bred to sell then that is not OK as it goes against vegan beliefs of not using animals for commercial gain.
Of course there is the argument that no one should buy a pet whilst there are so many to be rehomed, but that's a different story.
Thoughts, have we missed something?

WOW!

who is anyone to question whether or not a vegan should or shouldn't have a pet of any kind,(bought or rescue). should a blind person not be allowed a guide dog if they are a vegan?

why not look at it this way, a bought or rescued animal (of any kind) is one less animal going stray, being abused, used for a financial gain, not being cared for correctly,

it is one more animal in a loving, caring and safe environment. to me, that is way more important. basically who gives a shit what their owner chooses to or rather not eat as long as the animal is being treated correctly.

I've sometimes wondered how cat-owning vegans reconcile themselves to having to feed a meat based diet to their pet/s? I know it's possible to feed a dog a vegetarian diet, but cats cannot survive without meat.

I'm a vegan and I feed my dogs meat. They don't have the option of choosing to be vegan so I give them the highest quality food and treats, which all have meat in it. I also add in high quality wet food (super meaty) to their dry kibble, because it gives them happiness.

Is this hypocritical? /shrug I don't care to be honest. I'm not going to shove myself in a box labeled "vegan" with all manner of rules I must follow, or else suffer the consequences of eternal judgement. I do what I like for me, and I don't tell others how to live their life.

We all have lines in the sand and this is my line.

That was sorta the point I was trying to make. @FelicityWillowby i honestly couldn't give a shit if vegans have pets and I don't think others should either, as long the animal I'min question is having their every need met and is loved and respected, it's one less roaming streets starving or being abused unnecessarily put to sleep etc. That's what important to me, I don't care what food choices people make.....as long as it's not human flesh it makes no odds to me!
