AIBU to hate this heatwave?

Ugh everyone keeps telling me to make the most of the sunshine but i am finding it unbearable.

Lunch break at work - everyone chose to sit outside in the sun. I joined them to be sociable. Within five minutes i felt as though i was melting into the grass. Meanwhile, my colleagues were going on and on about how nice the sun was. I am extremely pale (despite my dark features - i do not tan at all) and burn very quickly. Despite having smothered my face and arms in factor 50 this morning, they were red from just five minutes of sitting in the sun. I had to come back in for the air conditioning. My scalp felt like it was crawling due to being so hot (definitely not lice!). My underwear felt like it was sticking to me.

I feel sick and tired as soon as I go outside in this heat. Is it normal for the heat to affect me so much? I was dreading home time as the walk to the car park from my work exit is about 15 mins. It almost killed me.

Then, when I got into my car, I couldn't touch the steering wheel for around ten minutes as it was so hot. I had to open the windows and stand outside of my car for those ten minutes as I couldn't breathe at all in there, even with leaving a small gap in all windows earlier in the day. And it takes a few minutes of the engine being on for the AC to kick in. Even then, the air felt hot to me.

Just home and went to hang the washing out. Almost fainted. I just felt so heavy and tired and out of breath (normally I'm quite fit!). As soon as I come back inside, I'm right as rain. Definitely not heat stroke or anything as it happens every single time the heat hits us and disappears as soon as I enter the shade. Year after year the heat affects me like this.

Also - as a side note - the wasps and flies and beasties! They are everywhere. Every time i throw one back out of the house, another two turn up.

I hate the summer! Surely I'm not the only one? Autumn is by far the best month. Mild temperatures and lovely, crunchy leaves (and no wasps!).

You heartbreak are all mental. It is beyond hideous. Grin

liverbird10 · 29/06/2018 22:14

HEATFREAKS, not heartbreak! Miss off, autocorrect.

liverbird10 · 29/06/2018 22:15

Piss, not Miss... oh, I give up.

See, even my stupid useless tablet knows it is too hot to function.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 29/06/2018 22:20

I love it... I couldn’t love it more and hope it stays like this for a long time!

hammeringinmyhead · 29/06/2018 22:32

Cool nights?!? It's 28 degrees in my bedroom at 10.30pm! With fan and window open.

Mc180768 · 29/06/2018 22:46

Poor you, OP. It's hard being post-menopausal in this heat. However, I feel for pregnant women. I remember when I was pregnant in June 92 and serving ice cream at a village fete. My DS was born that night three weeks early.

It's been rotten as DH has hay fever so he's always fucking sniffing. The dog is always looking for somewhere cool and we've had to shut him in. My DGS has got chickenpox so he's irritable and whiney.

Yet, my basil is growing massively.

13Crows · 30/06/2018 07:29

I hate this weather. And I'm sick of people telling me "oh you'll be twisting when it's cold"
No I bloody won't cos I love the cold weather! Not everyone does well in extreme heat. I feel exhausted, headaches, generally really unwell. The house is roasting and keeping my Frenchie puppy cool is hard.

HippyChickMama · 30/06/2018 08:02

YANBU! I hate the heat, I have autism and I really don't cope well with being too hot. I spend a lot of my working day in my car too which is ancient and hasn't got air conditioning which isn't helping. Roll on autumn, it's my favourite season.

biscuiteater · 30/06/2018 08:59

I think I must have acclimatised a bit but have been at home a lot which helps as my house is always cold for some reason. I spent too long indoors yesterday and got cold so had to go outside in the sun to warm up! I don't like getting too hot either so try and sit in the shade if I'm out.

greenhills2015 · 30/06/2018 12:24

Couldn't agree more it's fucking horrible, I have heat stroke despite spending the few hours I was outside in the shade

expatmigrant · 30/06/2018 12:55

Yes and I wish it wasn't just a 'heatwave'.

fleshmarketclose · 30/06/2018 13:25

YANBU OP we booked our holiday to Scotland thinking that we'd get cool and wet weather. Got here yesterday and it was still 27 degrees at 7pm. Didn't moan though as one of the locals was saying they couldn't remember ever having such lovely weather in 21 years so I figured their need is greater than mine just now. I actually enjoying that the heat makes us all lazy so suspect this will be a restful holiday.

LoniceraJaponica · 30/06/2018 13:29

Although I am absolutely loving this weather, I do understand that it is uncomfortable for some people.

One of the reasons it is so good where we live is that the temperatures go down significantly at night so getting to sleep isn’t a problem. Night time temperatures have been 12 – 14 degrees which is pretty comfortable.

The only other thing you can do is just follow all the sensible advice about keeping cool. I don’t understand people who complain about the heat and don’t do anything about it. These complainers are usually dressed in skinny jeans, trainers and tight tops and then wonder why they feel so hot!

We aren’t getting the humidity with this heatwave that we usually get. I washed 3 sets of curtains the other day. They were all dry within an hour of being on the line. Our maximum forecasted temperatures are 25 degrees and we are rural and it is breezy, so you can’t really compare this to 30 degree London for example.

“I love it when people on these threads come out and say it's not that hot when they don't even know where you live!”

Very true WTF. See my point above.

“And this weather is not rare...........not anymore. Last July was very humid and we had heatwaves in August and September of 2016”

Not where I live. This weather round here is as rare as hen’s teeth – see WTF’s point.

Commiserations to the heat haters and people whose health is affected by this weather. I bloody love it.

The80sweregreat · 30/06/2018 13:31

It’s awful. I feel ill in the heat

bridgetosomewhere · 30/06/2018 13:41

We are by the coast so get a nice breeze and I’m a real sun worshipper but weds at work at lunchtime I had to admit defeat and sit in the shade

The school has been really warm but thankfully we have a lovely shady garden with tall trees on one side so we spent most of the last week out there!

I do love it tho I can’t pretend I don’t. Currently in bikini and shorts on my sun lounger. Drink plenty of cold water that’s my only tip

HunterofStars · 30/06/2018 13:43

It's awful. I have autism and really struggle in heat, I've spent most of the week feeling faint and with a headache. I don't mind the sun but I find heat intolerable. I also have hayfever, which makes me feel worse.

In my area, people have been told not to water their gardens, to put away the paddling pools and to switch from baths to showers. I think the last time the water company put something like this in place was 2003 or maybe 2006.

I've spent most of the morning dreaming of autumn. Autumn is my favourite season by far.

biscuiteater · 30/06/2018 14:01

Tips for keeping your house cool, apologies if you do this already.

Open the loft hatch, it helps to keep upstairs cooler as hot air rises.
Open windows and doors in the evening.
During the day keep windows and doors shut, curtains drawn if sun is shining into the room. Better if you have black outs or heavy lined curtains.

If there isn't a hosepipe ban and you are really hot then consider hosing the walls down at night outside your bedroom.

Longer term consider planting climbers up the house walls, we have honey suckle, roses, clematis etc.

Another tip although I have never done it, is to go to bed with towel dried hair. Supposed to keep you cool overnight but not sure how your hair would look in the morning!

I hope this may help some of you.

Laiste · 30/06/2018 15:10

Windows open but curtains closed all but a crack in every room - doors propped open so they don't slam (breeze here) - back, front, patio and every door open when there's people about downstairs. It's keeping our house down to about 23/24 inside. No fans. But there IS that breeze off the fields, so we're lucky at the moment (midlands).

It's fucking ridiculous in the conservatory mind you. About 100000 degrees. It's freezing cold in it in the winter and hotter than the sun in the summer. If my mum didn't live with us i'd have it knocked down. She likes it 'cos by dad wanted it. ''Oh you can see the garden so nicely from it ...''. Well no - you've got all the blinds shut when ever the sun's out and the curtain across the door to it closed when it's not so no one can see anything!

LoniceraJaponica · 30/06/2018 15:12

Forgive me for asking this, but why does having autism mean that you hate hot weather?

TopWorrier · 30/06/2018 15:38

I hate the heat unless I'm on holiday and can cool off in the pool!
And even then I just want to come back to a cold bed when I'm home.
Some people are sun-worshippers whilst others are winter babies. Nothing wrong with that!

wolfmom · 30/06/2018 15:41

I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and this heat is making me sick

werideatdawn · 30/06/2018 15:51

I just hope we get this for the summer holidays. Kids have been out all day with the neighbours the last couple of weekends, playing in each other's gardens, TV has barely been on for days, we've been eating all meals in the garden. The mornings and evenings are cool here so it's really enjoyable.

Lizzie48 · 30/06/2018 15:54

I know what you mean. I never had problems in the past, but I was already going through the menopause and suffering hot flushes long before the heatwave. I just can't tolerate the heatwave at all this year. Sad

9amTrain · 30/06/2018 15:54

@DollyDayScream it often comes with hypersensitivity, not just to temperature but to sound, light etc.

Not always of course.

Coughy · 30/06/2018 15:56

I love sunshine i hate the heat. It makes me too sick and lazy to do anything.
