Shell fish in nursery lunchbox

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:07

Posting for traffic really so apologies

Dd has started to have packed lunch at nursery and the guidance I was given was just send her with what she will eat although we're a healthy eating school.

She's asked for prawn and cherry tomato skewers for tomorrow which is fine for me but is shell fish on the no list like nuts normally?

Sorry new to this lunch thing....

I'm sure you've already thought of it, OP but the cherry 🍅s strike far more fear into my soul than shellfish (which will be chilled anyway) - they'll be cut in half, or even quarters, right?

This is what I thought.

The op said halves...but, do you realise that's still almost as dangerous? The width of the tomato is still there.

It's why you need to cut grapes in half length ways not width ways otherwise the fullest part of the grape could still get stuck.

Same with cherrys...so with young dc they should really be quartered.

whiskeysourpuss · 27/06/2018 18:30

@RebelRogue but what she is she? If she's under 3 you're still a good mum Wink

whiskeysourpuss · 27/06/2018 18:31

Age ffs I hate autocorrect!!!

KurriKurri · 27/06/2018 18:31

I don't see it as any different from sending her with ham or cheese cubes and tomatoes - if that's what she likes what is the problem - prawns are hardly a foodstuff only eaten by the wealthiest members of society, so no idea where all the sneering comes from. I guess the people doing it were the ones who at school sneered at other kids lunches so they ended up not eating it .

As far as allergies are concerned OP - I am allergic to shellfish, but not from the smell of it, I would have an allergic reaction if I ate it, or if I got some on my hands and then put my hands in my mouth. So just make sure your little girl doesn't let anyone else eat any or touch her dinner. Although I would imagine if another child was very allergic it would be on the nursery's list of banned foods.

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 18:32

of course many 3 year olds haven't tried shellfish. Apart from anything else its forbidden in some religions.

CaptainBrickbeard · 27/06/2018 18:34

There are theee year olds who never get given fresh food or home cooked food; there are pre schoolers bringing in old McDonald’s or just chocolate bars for lunch. All sorts of terrible neglect. I don’t think never eating prawns registers as a shocking or surprising thing for most people tbh. I do think is a really risky thing to send in as a packed lunch.l and not worth it when you can feed prawns at home.

LondonElle · 27/06/2018 18:45

Some harsh responses on this thread. We are all different, we all bring up our children differently and the vast majority turn out just fine! Some kids love chocolate spread, some kids prefer fish, some children love fruit some hate it. Why all the judgment and catty comments! I work in a child care setting and see loads of variables in lunchboxes.... as long as a child is fed so what! I used to have ketchup sandwich’s as a kid!!!

LemonysSnicket · 27/06/2018 18:46

I think people are being v dramatic. Prawns heating up slightly on the way to school and being restored in a fridge until lunch is highly unlikely to make anyone ill Confused they're prawns not raw fucking chicken.

LemonysSnicket · 27/06/2018 18:50

@petrolpump28 but salmon is gross and prawns are heaven ... I don't think it means OPs DD has additional needs because she knows what she wants.

Loyaultemelie · 27/06/2018 19:07

I wish my eldest would have eaten that! Dd2 on the other hand I can imagine it caused amazement at just under 2 by point blank refusing to eat off the kids menu and wanting the starter of lobster and crab ravioli (dh made the mistake of mentioning it). She ate every bite

RebelRogue · 27/06/2018 19:08

@whiskeysourpuss she's 6 and a half!!! Just another way I'm failing at parenting. Oh well..good thing I've started a therapy fund.Grin

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 27/06/2018 19:24

I always used to ask DS2 what he wanted for his packed lunch, mostly because when you can't use bread you run out of ideas. Although he liked French toast fingers. Probably because they didn't taste like bread. 😂

borntobequiet · 27/06/2018 19:37

Send in the skewers. Then tell us what happens.

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 19:50

I'm not sending in the skewers!

OP posts:
Itchytights · 27/06/2018 19:56

Not fish. In this weather and in a packed lunch box.

No way

halfwitpicker · 27/06/2018 19:56

But are you sending in the prawns?

BertrandRussell · 27/06/2018 19:58

....there ought to be prawns.....

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 20:00

Yes in a pot with now quartered cherry tomatoes

OP posts:
CardinalCat · 27/06/2018 20:00

I wouldn't risk it for lunch for all of the sensible reasons given re possible spoiling in the heat (huge fridges are far from infallible). To avoid disappointment/ waste, give her the prawn skewers for breakfast instead, and pack something else for her lunch.

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 20:02

Sure of my lines
No one is there

LML83 · 27/06/2018 20:02

I wouldn't send shellfish into a nursery without checking first.
If someone is allergic it can be one of the more serious ones.

And like others I would worry about the fridge. If the fridge is packed full it may not be cold enough.

Don't surprise DD, let her know in the morning and give her an alternative you know she enjoys.

blinkineckmum · 27/06/2018 20:04

Mine haven't tried shellfish. DH is intolerant, I don't like it. Why would I buy expensive food that will get wasted for toddlers when they can have cheaper fish they will eat? They've never tried lamb or any meat other than fish either. I definitely don't feel like a failure as a parent though! Pretty sure I had a much more limited diet at 3 but I eat very healthily now.

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 20:05

yes for gods sake dont surprise her about lack of prawns.

furandchandeliers · 27/06/2018 20:10

Lol at the jealous people on this thread Grin
Obviously jealous because their kids will only eat jam sandwichesGrinGrinGrin
