Shell fish in nursery lunchbox

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:07

Posting for traffic really so apologies

Dd has started to have packed lunch at nursery and the guidance I was given was just send her with what she will eat although we're a healthy eating school.

She's asked for prawn and cherry tomato skewers for tomorrow which is fine for me but is shell fish on the no list like nuts normally?

Sorry new to this lunch thing....

Colditz who said they don't know it exists? What a weird assumption! We would never eat the one type of food product so frequently, but I don't feel shock that you do Wink I really think you need to chill out Grin

ErictheGuineaPig · 27/06/2018 18:13

Oh no. I can't remember how old my kids were when they tried shellfish and now I'm worried it wasn't BY THREE and I've failed them without even knowing Sad

PrivateDoor · 27/06/2018 18:13

OP I agree, I don't recall coming across any child who dislikes tomato. We have various friends of the DC over for meals frequently and have never had any turn their nose up at the meals which at the moment, often include salad.

WendyCope · 27/06/2018 18:13

We all know what shell fish is and eat it, the point is, it is NOT a sensible thing to put in a lunchbox! With skewers Grin

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/06/2018 18:14

I'm sure you've already thought of it, OP but the cherry 🍅s strike far more fear into my soul than shellfish (which will be chilled anyway) - they'll be cut in half, or even quarters, right?

PrivateDoor · 27/06/2018 18:14

Eric, the horror Shock Our poor children, scarred for life due to their prawn free toddler-hood Sad

Barbie222 · 27/06/2018 18:14

In this heat I wouldn't pack that for myself never mind a young child, so no I wouldn't.

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 18:15

Halves yes

halfwitpicker · 27/06/2018 18:16

Got to admit, OP is taking all this like a champ.

ErictheGuineaPig · 27/06/2018 18:17

They definitely had tried kiwi and lamb though so I get some kind of mum medal for that right?!

WendyCope · 27/06/2018 18:17

Well, she asked a ridiculous question.

halfwitpicker · 27/06/2018 18:17

Was at the hospital with DS when he was little and we saw a baby that had an allergic reaction to lobster. He was red. Like an actual lobster, his entire body had turned red from the reaction! He was fine though, smiling etc.

Not sure why you'd give a 1 year old lobster, but hey ho

pigsDOfly · 27/06/2018 18:18

Yes, I realised after I posted that the caviar feeding people were probably talking about lumpfish roe BertrandRussell. But that most definitely isn't caviar.

For a moment I did think that it was just MNer stealth boasting on a epic scale.

PrivateDoor · 27/06/2018 18:18

Eric, you definitely beat me - I didn't manage to give lamb either Grin Well unless they had it at grannys.

WendyCope · 27/06/2018 18:19

I won't give my 9 year old DD a hard boiled egg as she gets made fun of, because of the smell. OP will learn with her prawn skewers! She has time.

Takethemdown · 27/06/2018 18:19

As someone who has worked in schools and completed food diaries with children I can definitely say that our school had plenty of families who didn't buy fresh fruit and veg regularly :(

Sheeparemyfriends · 27/06/2018 18:19

Give her the skewers. Life is too short for the daftness of school rules these days. As long as they are cold and not spikey

ErictheGuineaPig · 27/06/2018 18:20

Appalling privatedoor. Your poor deprived kids. I bet its all greggs and fruit shoots round yours

CaptainBrickbeard · 27/06/2018 18:23

Life would be shorter if we have three year olds skewers. In my experience of theee year olds anyway Grin.

(Also, hot on the heels of my admission of my children’s ignorance of shellfish I have to admit that neither of them like tomatoes either. Unless in ketchup form. And yes, I did make my own ketchup from scratch for a while but now I am at peace with the shop-bought stuff Blush)

PrivateDoor · 27/06/2018 18:23

Absolutely, after all that is the only alternatives to lamb and prawns Grin In my defence my children can recognise prawns, they just have no desire to eat them. Which I cannot really argue with since I refuse to try them too haha.

CaptainBrickbeard · 27/06/2018 18:23

If we gave- three year olds skewers, not have. I’m not talking about old skewers. That typo really ruined my joke Angry

RebelRogue · 27/06/2018 18:24

@colditz DD is 6 and a hlf and never had shellfish. I never had it until 25 and never again since. Hope you don't faint from the shock.

Nanny0gg · 27/06/2018 18:26

I cannot believe some of you are fucking serious, having 3 year olds who have never tried any form of shellfish?

I can think of many, many three year-olds who have never tried shellfish.

whiskeysourpuss · 27/06/2018 18:27

I cannot believe some of you are fucking serious, having 3 year olds who have never tried any form of shellfish?

I'm 39 & have never tried any form of shellfish - the look & smell of it makes me physically sick why the fuck would I want to eat it??? Due to this it's just not something we've ever had in the house or when we're eating out as I'd then not be able to eat so none of my kids had tried shellfish until they were well past 3 (the 10yo still hasn't tried it).

The reason it's not on the list of banned food at a nursery even though it's a well known allergy is because it's not something they'd consider anyone would put in a 3yo's lunchbox so they wouldn't think to add it to the list!

RebelRogue · 27/06/2018 18:27

@CaptainBrickbeard DD is a shellfish non trier and a tomato avoider,ketchup included.Grin
