Shell fish in nursery lunchbox

Posting for traffic really so apologies

Dd has started to have packed lunch at nursery and the guidance I was given was just send her with what she will eat although we're a healthy eating school.

She's asked for prawn and cherry tomato skewers for tomorrow which is fine for me but is shell fish on the no list like nuts normally?

Sorry new to this lunch thing....

Housework--I'm sorry I don't follow

As in Margo Leadbetter.

CaptainBrickbeard · 27/06/2018 16:31

I wouldn’t risk it just in case it’s not properly refrigerated - if by unlucky chance her lunchbox is left out in the heat for example. Prawns are too dangerous. Save them for dinner when you can ensure the freshness.

daffodildelight · 27/06/2018 16:32

Have you asked your nursery? They are the only ones who can answer this.

Beamur · 27/06/2018 16:32

Check with school about allergies. Shellfish is a common one. Not all schools ban allergens though. Nothing banned at DD's school, but kitchen has a list of children with dietary needs on it.
I's say no to the skewers though, just put them in a box.

Why would you put it on a skewer?! Just put some prawns and cherry tomatoes in a little box!

Um, wrt her getting upset about having a lunch she hasn’t asked for - I might try to address that. Obviously there is nothing wrong with her requesting certain things in her pack up but I’d make it clear she can always have exactly what she wants. Sometimes it isn’t suitable and surely she can cope with being told that?

CookieSue222 · 27/06/2018 16:36

Shellfish are one of the 14 Allergens that now (since Dec 2014), by law, have to be declared on food packaging etc. Staff working in food sales to the public also need to be aware whether the foodstuffs they sell/provide contain any of these allergens if asked by customers. I suggest you check with Nursery first. Also, especially with the current weather can the Nursery guarantee that your DD lunchbox will be refrigerated? - if not I would certainly not send in prawns.

shiklah · 27/06/2018 16:37

She'll be upset if she doesn't get what she wants/asks for to eat?

CaptainBrickbeard · 27/06/2018 16:37

Sorry, I’d make it clear she CAN’T always have what she wants!

bogglepop · 27/06/2018 16:39

Skewers are a bad idea. what about crab sticks with marie rose and some cherry toms/cucumber

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 16:40

oh lordy the world has truly gone very mad. Deconstructed shellfish skewers in a nursery childs packed lunch.

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 27/06/2018 16:40

Tell her it's a deconstructed prawn and tomato skewer. Maybe see if you can thread the prawns onto some crisped up curly fries to make her lunch less Penelope Kieth-esque?

LARLARLAND · 27/06/2018 16:40

When mine were little I used to roast chicken drumsticks for their packed lunches. This thread takes me back.

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 16:41

the child is 3? and can remember her lunch request and is upset if said request is not granted????

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:42

Shiklah and captain - yes she would but only because I've told her I'll make them for her, it only dawned on me there may be a small problem re allergies once I'd gotten the prawns out to defrost.

Dd will be looking forward to her lunch all morning and if she opens up her lunch box to something she's not expecting she just won't eat it

Personally I’ll be really happy if DD requests healthy things like this in lunchboxes! Sounds good OP

ItchyAF · 27/06/2018 16:43

Though does seem a bit young to look forwards all morning

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:46

Petrol - she likes nice food so I don't really see an issue I'd be slammed if u was on here asking if Nutella was OK so I guess I can't win Smile

She has an exceptional memory so no there's no hoping she'll forget once we agree to something with her it's set in stone she's not very flexible and doesn't react well to last minute changes we have to prepare her

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:47

Itchy - we've had a change in family circumstances and the lunch thing is still quite new so yeah she looks forward to opening her lunch box

She has an exceptional memory

How did we guess? Because of the omega 3, per chance?

ItchyAF · 27/06/2018 16:49

Ah well

Sounds nice, I might make some for myself!

sockunicorn · 27/06/2018 16:49

mine has a cheese sandwich and some pom bears Hmm

Haffiana · 27/06/2018 16:50

Make sure they are proper North Atlantic prawns, not farmed (warm water) king prawns. Those buggers are filled with more antibiotics and chemicals than you could imagine - far, far worse than tuna. Just google it.
