Shell fish in nursery lunchbox

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:07

Posting for traffic really so apologies

Dd has started to have packed lunch at nursery and the guidance I was given was just send her with what she will eat although we're a healthy eating school.

She's asked for prawn and cherry tomato skewers for tomorrow which is fine for me but is shell fish on the no list like nuts normally?

Sorry new to this lunch thing....

I know you aren't doing skewers tomorrow but I just wanted to peak-MN this thread by meeting you know toddler-safe skewer is a stick of lemongrass, for future lunches Wink

Tenbob- awesome thanks

Seriously though what can a toddler do with a skewer that they couldn’t do with a pair of scissors or a sharpened pencil. Mealtimes will be one of the most supervised time of the day. Can a 3 yr old really not be supervised in charge of a skewer?

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 27/06/2018 20:27

Mine would love that. The nursery should say if there is an airborne allergy and sharing should be discouraged anyway. Frozen jelly is a good alternative to an ice block.

SamHeughansLeftEyebrow · 27/06/2018 20:30

I don't recall coming across any child who dislikes tomato

Clearly never met mine then! None of the males in my household will touch raw tomato. It is surprisingly common, something to do with some chemical that some people can taste and others can't.

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 20:45

so people are packing lunches for 3 year olds who have amazing memories and pre order their food. Not only do they pre order they would like it served preferably on a skewer or failing that a stalk of lemon grass may do. Jelly ( presumably vegan and sugar free) can take the place of ice.

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 20:46

and as for sharing should be discouraged.....god help us.

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 20:48

Sam - didn't realise that was a thing with tomatoes

I had horrendous food poisoning as a child from a prawn sandwich in a lunch bag though my school didn’t use fridges like yours do. Even so I would hesitate to send them just incase they weren’t refrigerated to a cold enough temperature.

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/06/2018 21:01

I didn't like tomatoes growing up - I like them now, but probably still couldn't eat them completely alone - would need to be part of something else. Neither DC like them, though I'm hoping their tastes will evolve.

They can be quite acidic, which is possibly why some people don't like them.

IStillDrinkCava · 27/06/2018 21:19

Cheers Rebel Smile

My two didn't like tomatoes (or any other salad veg) until they were 7 or so. I always got the impression it was a texture thing. Bolognaise was never a problem!

whiskeysourpuss · 27/06/2018 21:26

I don't recall coming across any child who dislikes tomato

DS can't stand tomatoes it's the only food he's tried that he's disliked instantly

Beamur · 27/06/2018 21:31

My DD is a highly selective eater, she won't eat tomatoes (amongst other things) but does like prawns.
I like the lemongrass tip.

bobstersmum · 27/06/2018 21:43

Prawns are shellfish!?? They're never in a shell when I buy them? I thought they were just a little fish!

petrolpump28 · 27/06/2018 21:45

like a wee swimmy fishy prawny thing?

SadieHH · 27/06/2018 21:54

Shit, my dd is 10 and never tried shellfish. Unless you count prawn toasts at the Chinese... Handcuff me now and take me away for neglect!

bobstersmum · 27/06/2018 21:59

I've just googled them, never eating them again they're like something from another planet! Awful looking things.

dementedma · 27/06/2018 21:59

my 3 dcs - now adults - had never had any kind of shellfish when they were young. Contrary to many MNers on here, it's not an every day staple food for many families

Greggers2017 · 27/06/2018 22:06

My son has the exact same every day
Cream crackers
Cheese triangles
2 cheese strings
Fromage frais
A bun
Packet of Pom bear plain
Carton of orange

tenbob · 27/06/2018 22:19

bobsters

You just had to google what a prawn looks like? Confused Despite having bought them numerous times?

I hate to break it to you, but chicken fillets don't grow on Fillet Trees and mince doesn't grow on a bush either

SoftSheen · 27/06/2018 22:27

Bobsters Prawns are crustaceans- don't have a shell like a mussel or whelk but have eyes, lots of legs and a crunchy exoskeleton which has to be removed before you eat them.

PourMeAGlassOfMilk · 27/06/2018 22:39

The prawns would be fine at our pre school. The cherry tomatoes would need to be cut in half as they pose a similar choking risk to grapes.

Deadringer · 27/06/2018 22:43

My youngest is 9 and I don't think she has ever tried raw tomatoes, kiwi or lamb tbh. My older kids and I don't like any of them so I don't buy them, there are lots and lots of other food options out there that we do like. She has had prawns though. but not in her lunch box

BarbarianMum · 27/06/2018 22:48

Shellfish are no more likely to cause a severe allergic reaction than eggs, or fish, or milk, or celery. Fine to send them unless you have been told otherwise.

The reverse food snobbery on this thread is pathetic.
