Shell fish in nursery lunchbox

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:07

Posting for traffic really so apologies

Dd has started to have packed lunch at nursery and the guidance I was given was just send her with what she will eat although we're a healthy eating school.

She's asked for prawn and cherry tomato skewers for tomorrow which is fine for me but is shell fish on the no list like nuts normally?

Sorry new to this lunch thing....

Mine asks for Jam sandwiches Confused

CMOTDibbler · 27/06/2018 16:08

Shell fish, no problem as long as you know it will stay cold. Skewers, not great in a class of small children!

Rachie1986 · 27/06/2018 16:09

Is worry about the heat and warm fish personally!

Usually shellfish not a problem, our nursery is just nuts and kiwi not allowed

YesILikeItToo · 27/06/2018 16:09

There is no restriction in shellfish at my school, which does say no to nuts.

ILoveMyMonkey · 27/06/2018 16:09

How will you keep it cold? That sounds like food poisoning waiting to happen.

Also, yes shellfish can be a severe allergen so I wouldn't send it.

BertrandRussell · 27/06/2018 16:09

I’m sure it’d be fine from an allergy point of view, but the skewers might be a problem! And are you sure prawns in a lunchbox is a good idea in this hot weather?

I’d give them to her for dinner, to be honest.

RafikiIsTheBest · 27/06/2018 16:11

Depends on the school and what allergies the children have.

But agree, skewers for a nursery child? Maybe not the wisest of plans. Plus in this heat? Fish wouldn't be advisable anyway.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 27/06/2018 16:11

I think unless they tell you not to, it’s fine. Also would worry a bit about the heat though...

At our nursery we now can’t send anything containing nuts, but previously we could as there were no allergy sufferers. Other than that, we can send anything which is reasonably healthy.

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:11

Sorry should have said, lunch bags are taken in the morning and put in the big fridge then given out at lunch so no issue with keeping it cold.

I've cut the sharp bits off the skewers

There would be a significant risk of toxic pathogens given weather, little ones inability to wash hands effectively and communal storage. I’d stick with vegetable sticks and hummus with breadsticks, a slice of tortilla, some tabbouleh and a pot of strawberries.
Or a jam sandwich.

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:13

She won't eat a jam sandwich Grin I wish she did.

Yum banana! Will you make my lunch tomorrow Wink?

FuzzyPenguin · 27/06/2018 16:14

I would assume that since you haven’t been told it’s a banned item there are no allergies but it might be a good idea to call and check if you can? Ours has it on the list but that is because there is an allergic child.

ErictheGuineaPig · 27/06/2018 16:17

This is the mumsnettiest thread about lunch boxes ever. Prawn skewers Grin

shiklah · 27/06/2018 16:17

It will get warm and smelly and the skewer is dangerous.

IStillDrinkCava · 27/06/2018 16:19

With anything other than nuts, it's generally OK unless you are told otherwise because of specific children's allergies. Prawns are fine, just stop if you're asked to. Bear in mind they can't be as closely monitored as at home. I think skewers are a bit unnecessary - it's a perfect chance to give her a "special packed lunch version" in a pot instead of onnastick.

Our school bans eggs due to a child's allergy, but school dinners have quiche etc. It's a bit random.

GertieMotherwell · 27/06/2018 16:21

It’s in a fridge so ok.

Deconstructed Wink skewers would be my recommendation (ust bung tomatoes and prawns in a plastic tub)

nokidshere · 27/06/2018 16:25

I wouldn't send prawns in a packed lunch in this weather. Far too many variances for them to get warm and dangerous.

Give her something else and let her have the prawns fresh at home for dinner

HouseworkIsASin10 · 27/06/2018 16:27

Prawn skewers? Is she Penelope Keith?

FluffyMcCloud · 27/06/2018 16:28

Why would you put it on a skewer?! Just put some prawns and cherry tomatoes in a little box! Confused

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:29

Housework--I'm sorry I don't follow

OP posts:
LARLARLAND · 27/06/2018 16:29

I would worry about shellfish. Do you have a long journey to nursery during which the prawns could become warm?

DaffoDeffo · 27/06/2018 16:30

lol housework

yes I'd not include the skewers. When you say nursery I am not sure how old but if you're talking 3ish, then those skewers would make an effective weapon in the wrong hands!

and crikey that must be a big fridge to put all the lunchboxes in - I think both my dcs went through the whole of school from nursery to leaving with them sat in a room so horrid and warm by lunch time!

LARLARLAND · 27/06/2018 16:30

Yes and the skewers are a no no. Even with the ends cut off they are dangerous in the hands of toddlers.

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:31

She likes food on skewers makes it fun I suppose. I'll do a little pot instead with prawns and cherry toms in.

I'm not worried about the storage of it a nursery and going off etc the issue would be if I send something she hasnt asked for she just won't eat it and she'll be upset
