AIBU to want the 'midi' length trend to bugger off?

So many gorgeous dresses ruined by the fact that they stop mid-calf. I can't be arsed to wear towering heels to compensate. Wharever happened to good old fashioned 'just above the knee'?

OP posts:

I love midis, so flattering! I'm only 5' 2" and have them in soft, fluid fabrics with a smart shirt or top tucked in. Flat shoes. I think shorter skirts look a bit dated now.

FrangipaniBlue · 28/06/2018 22:53

I love midi too, my calf is not the widest part of my leg, my quads are so anything that finishes at my knee looks frickin horrific.

Midi or mini all the way!

SexyManatee · 28/06/2018 22:56

I want more maxi in my life. Cover the whole damn leg.

MammaSchwifty · 28/06/2018 23:02

Can all my fellow midi fans recommend a good brand for skirts and dresses? I'm usually head to toe H&M but find they can be a bit hit and miss in this department. Cheaper brands are fine, as long as the fabric isn't see thru.

Clionba, your skirts sound gorgeous... I love that kind of fabric, where do you buy from?

WTFsMyUserName · 28/06/2018 23:06

@SleightOfMind , went into Whistles and finally tried on the skirts. Although they're meant to be high waisted, a size 10 was perfect to make it sit lower on my hips. Bought 3 different colours Blush

@FaFoutis these are so lovely and swooshy and have a nice weight to the fabric, not rigid or cut too narrow at the bottom so there is a lot of movement. 💃🏽

wearyalready my waist is my smallest bodily bit, not teeny by any stretch but I can do the nipped in waist thing.

I think being tall helps, this type of culotte style skims my bum/thighs which are sturdy/sporty!

mintich · 29/06/2018 09:03

I love midi!

AynRandTheObjectivist · 29/06/2018 17:39

Just been watching a load of Disney songs on YouTube with the toddler and almost every heroine/princess wears midi for her everyday outfit (floor length for the ballgowns, when they have them). If this isn't proof that it's timelessly considered to be feminine, demure and practical, then I don't know what is!

Peanutbuttercups21 · 29/06/2018 20:27

To me midis look very M&S Per Una Grin unless worn by young things who wear them "ironically" with baggy jumpers and oversized black rimmed glasses and plaits

It is a risky style for a middle aged mum like me, easy to get it wrong and look "daily mail sad face frump", or per una...

Oly5 · 29/06/2018 20:29

Yanbu. It’s suxh a frumpy look!

Namechangedforthisss · 29/06/2018 20:31

Yabu

MissCharleyP · 29/06/2018 20:42

Haven’t RTFT but I too hate them OP! I’m only 5’ 2” and even with heels I think they make me look dumpy. The only ones I can wear are very fitted, stretchy ones as they don’t swamp me in fabric!

Marble2302 · 29/06/2018 20:55

I love midi dresses I have fat knees so they suit me.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 29/06/2018 21:01

I think they are hard to wear if you're petite.

ScrambledSmegs · 29/06/2018 21:18

I like midis. I'm 5'5 and it seems that most of them come up slightly longer than true midi on me, which is perfect and very flattering for the legs. I found a lovely soft pink pleated jersey one in m&s which has become my favourite summer skirt. It was also under £30, a bargain considering how much I'm wearing it in this weather.

I wear it with flats.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 29/06/2018 21:25

Is it polyester? So many are

VanGoghsDog · 29/06/2018 21:29

Can't wear above the knee for work as it means my thighs show when I cross my legs.

On or just below the knee doesn't exist. So midi it is!

ScrambledSmegs · 29/06/2018 22:17

Yes it’s polyester with some elastane. Don’t let that put you off - I normally hate polyester and avoid it like the plague, but for some reason the fabric of this skirt is soft, wearable and cool. And I’ve had loads of compliments about it so it’s not just me being deluded Grin

Soft pink midi skirt

Clionba · 01/07/2018 08:51

I see a lot of young women wearing very short, floral flippy dresses with leggings. Surely that's too hot? Wouldn't a midi length make more sense, be more elegant and more cool?

Skydiving · 01/07/2018 08:53

I equally hate the jumpsuits that end mid calf and just hang. Even on a 6ft size 6 model they look awful

AynRandTheObjectivist · 01/07/2018 08:53

It's a beautiful skirt but the pleats wouldn't work on me. Pity.

CharltonLido73 · 01/07/2018 09:01

It is certainly to do with height. Any midi that stops at the widest part of the calf muscle looks hideous on anyone who is anything other than wafer-thin.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 01/07/2018 09:02

I’m 5 8. I’ve waited years for midis to return. I haven’t bought a dress for years, and now I’ve got several!

I think midis look new rather than frumpy. And l think above knee or on knee look dated. The proportions are crap in that type of style.

Minesril · 01/07/2018 09:18

I cycle/walk everywhere. All my dresses are just above the knee and look great Grin

AynRandTheObjectivist · 01/07/2018 09:20

Years of walking and cycling everywhere are precisely what have given me the calves from hell and make above the knee skirts look like shit.

I knew I should have spent the time stapled to the sofa!
