AIBU to want the 'midi' length trend to bugger off?

So many gorgeous dresses ruined by the fact that they stop mid-calf. I can't be arsed to wear towering heels to compensate. Wharever happened to good old fashioned 'just above the knee'?

OP posts:
WTFsMyUserName · 26/06/2018 23:47

I think they look elegant and I am on the hunt to find one that works for me. I'm 5ft 5 and a size 6/8 but so far the ones I've tried on sit too high on my waist (I have a boyish figure so anything high waisted is too tight at the waistband and creates a bulge underneath 😬.

Has anyone found a pleated midi that sits on the hips? I've been eyeing up the Whistles satin pleated skirt in flame red but it's £££ and probably a bit too long or high waisted for me. Sorry to hijack your thread OP!

ijustwannadance · 26/06/2018 23:48

Dakota's fugly shoes are worse than the daft length pants!

I love longer midi, so nearer to ankle. I hate my knees but legs still ok. Love vintage style dresses.

I get more annoyed trying to find dresses with short sleeves. They all seem sleevless with a high neck. Just gives a horrid boxy shape. Need cover for my podgy arms.

SleightOfMind · 28/06/2018 17:59

WTFs
Could you buy one you like in a larger size and ask a tailor to alter it for a lower waistband?

Should work as long as it’s not patterned.

I’m finding tucked in tops difficult to adjust to. I’m 44, with 4DC. Anything that poufs out my tummy makes me anxious Grin

wrenika · 28/06/2018 18:08

I love midi length. All my dresses are midi. It covers my knobbly knees, my powerful thighs, and I don't have to worry about it riding up when I sit down. I wear them with flats...maybe it is frumpy, but honestly, I put comfort over 'youthful' looks anyday. So I guess I'm a 29 year old frump!

CorianderDestroysFamilies · 28/06/2018 19:30

I love a midi! My upper legs are quite hairy Blush and I wax rather than shave them but I do shave below the knees so I can wear a midi all the time and not just the few days before the regrowth starts Confused

AynRandTheObjectivist · 28/06/2018 20:36

One of the charms of the midi is that in a different time and style, it definitely has been considered frumpy. So it just looks even more stylish and elegant when you take it into the lovely cuts, fabrics and prints that it comes in now. It's sort of like when gorgeous women wear a tweed two piece. You know it's supposed to look drab and funnily enough, that's exactly why it doesn't. There's a degree of self awareness and playing with expectations.

bringincrazyback · 28/06/2018 20:48

YANBU. I can't seem to get midi length to look anything other than frumpy on me, unless I offset it with an impractical heel, so I'm not a fan at all.

Deshasafraisy · 28/06/2018 20:51

Yabvvvvvvvu - I love midi!

FaFoutis · 28/06/2018 21:00

The ones I have seen are too gathered. Has anyone seen a midi that is a slimish, slightly A line shape?
I'm wearing 1970s midis from vintage shops, but I'd like a new one.

WearyAlready · 28/06/2018 21:24

It's staggeringly unflattering.

For the record, I have good legs - 34", play a lot of sport and train, so 'well-turned calves', as the Daily Heil would say - and midis look awful on the vast majority of people, myself included.

Either on or above the knee, or full-length.

I'm not 40 yet, I don't want to look like my grandmother (with apologies to people who are 40+ and/or grandmothers. Nothing wrong with either of those things, I'm just not).

Which sadist decided these were a good idea?

OnlyonMN · 28/06/2018 21:30

Love midi length they look fab on me. Above the knee is awful. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean no one else should have it.

Gilead · 28/06/2018 21:35

YABU! I am on long term steroids. Not only do they put on weight, they re-distribute the fat around the body - hence 'moonface'. This summer the prednisalone has decided that my knees are in fact over stuffed sausage cases!

bakingdemon · 28/06/2018 21:37

Another vote for midi length here. Love that 50s style.

kitkatsky · 28/06/2018 21:42

Agree. I am short at 5"3 but midi makes me look dwarfish

ElenOfTheWays · 28/06/2018 21:57

Im 5'3" and have a swishy midi dress that is a lovely ballerina length on me. Looks good with flats. Most of my dresses and skirts are maxi and although I've had to shorten a few, many are ok on me, just grazing the ground without shoes.

I hate on or above the knee. To me THAT looks frumpy. Like school skirts.

Horses for courses I guess.

Almondio · 28/06/2018 22:08

See, at 5ft 11, most midi dresses are a great length on me, with flat sandals, I love them.

I'm a 12 but I don't like my knees, and my calves are sturdy so midi dresses work really well.

Almondio · 28/06/2018 22:10

weary that's hilarious! I've worn that exact thing today and LOVE them! Gorgeous silky fabric, tucked in sleeveless top, flats...perfect for city chic in this heat.

TheVanguardSix · 28/06/2018 22:11

Midi is so classy.
And let’s face it, knees are ugly.

WilburIsSomePig · 28/06/2018 22:13

I think the 'just above the knee' length is so dated now. Time to move on (or round and round as always seems to be the case!).

DieAntword · 28/06/2018 22:15

Personally I want all dresses at least ankle length so I never have to shave my legs.

MammaSchwifty · 28/06/2018 22:19

Love midi, it has an elegant early 20th century vibe about it.

Hides my less-than-perfect knees and thighs, no need to fear showing too much going up stairs or thanks to an errant gust of wind. Can cross legs or ankles at will. No tugging down, holding down, riding up when sitting... It's a very wearable and comfortable style.

Just above the knee is a length i will always associate with 90s office workers, and, for some reason, Vanessa feltz. I imagine a lady sitting rigidly and uncomfortably, unable to cross her legs and tugging awkwardly at her hemline which is disappearing ever upwards.

Plus, I think you need really good legs to successfully do 'just above the knee'.

FrozenMargarita17 · 28/06/2018 22:28

Midi is the best thing I can wear now. My legs are covered in stretch marks from ballooning at the end of pregnancy :(

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 28/06/2018 22:33

YABU I love midi

I find above the knee so unflattering, it's the worst length for everyone.

WearyAlready · 28/06/2018 22:36

@Almondio, do you, by any chance, have a tiny wee neat waist?

Now yes, that's a good look, but I am straight-uppy-downy, with rugby-playing shoulders, and they make me look like a tatty sack tied in the middle...
