Just that really. What do you turn to when you maybe need cheering up, or a book or television show you turn to again and again.

This is a bit inspired by realising that I re-read the same books and watch the same tv shows again and again and dh just doesn’t get it as he will read or watch something once, whereas I find it quite nice to just have a familiar story to just delve into with no thought required

One Foot in the Grave re-runs.

I think it's the best sitcom ever, plus my Dad used to love it and it reminds me of him (RIP)

SandysMam · 26/06/2018 20:56

Book - Jemima J by Jane Green, read it all through the time my mum was dying, such escapism.

Programme wise, have really got into The Job Lot lately, very gentle and funny.

CanIhavedessertfirst · 26/06/2018 20:59

FaithEverPresent · 26/06/2018 21:02

TV: Gavin and Stacey, Veronica Mars, Buffy

Films: The Sound of Music, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Books: To Kill a Mockingbird, all Marian Keyes - especially anything with the Walsh family.

MyfanwyMontez · 26/06/2018 21:03

Shirley Valentine. And I watched a film with Pauline Collins called Mrs Caldecott ‘s Cabbage War - it was great.Little bit cheesy, but still fun.

Loopytiles · 26/06/2018 21:06

Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchey.
Anne of Green Gables.

Jane Austen in any media!

Gilmore Girls.

Peanuts and Garfield comic strips.

Desert Island Discs and Great Lives. Life Scientific.

I found Murial’s Wedding really bleak in parts, which prevents it being comfort viewing fodder for me.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 26/06/2018 21:09

@faitheverpresent - To Kill a Mockingbird is probably my favourite ever

QueenOfMyWorld · 26/06/2018 21:10

The royle family

AveAtqueVale · 26/06/2018 21:11

Tv series: Charmed and The West Wing.

Books: for comfort I reread all the Harry Potters, Jean Plaidy, Georgette Heyer, Agatha Christie and PG Wodehouse. I have other books I love and reread often but these are my go-tos for easy diversion.

Im not really a film person but I find old Westerns very comforting as they remind me of summer holidays at my grandparents when I was little. Also fairly fond of Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park for the same reason.

rosesandflowers1 · 26/06/2018 21:12

Brooklyn Nine Nine. Maybe the Big Bang Theory.

Books I'll usually go for childhood ones because they're just more comforting - A Little Princess, Little Lord Faunterloy, Enid Blyton.

Or the Harry Potters!

MyKingdomForACaramel · 26/06/2018 21:12

@loopy I just read my first ever Mauve Binchy a week or so ago - it was pure comfort and sort of inspired this thread! (Was the evening class one)

When I’m feeling down / ill/ sorry for myself tv: SATC, dinner date, 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps, Corrie . Or re runs of shows like Supermarket Sweep (rip Dale), as they remind me of having sick days as a kid and snuggling on the sofa with tomato soup.

TV - Buffy, Greys Anatomy, Coupling, Friends

I love a good re-watch/read sometimes. Old favourites can be just as good as finding a great new one.

Brendatheblender · 26/06/2018 21:24

Peep show, I always watch it in bed and laugh as much as I did the first time I watched it!

I can never really read books twice but I have plenty of favourites.

halfwitpicker · 26/06/2018 21:25

James Herriot books.

The Bodyguard.
Sense and Sensibility (film not book)
A Walk in the Woods (ditto)
Seinfeld

Churrolicious · 26/06/2018 21:27

Oooooooh just thought of another one...

Diagnosis Murder. I know it's dross, but it's just so watchable. Especially the random episodes where additional Van Dyke family members get cast, or they randomly get six guest stars who were all in Star Trek / Quincy / some other eighties thing together back in the day.

Also, the episode where Dick Van Dyke played four members of the same family, including a woman (and they basically just put pan stick over his moustache and covered 'her' in a veil).

Brendatheblender · 26/06/2018 21:28

Ooo film has to be Forrest Gump!
