AIBU to be mortified? I'm feeling so embarrassed

PaintTheTownInNeutrals · 26/06/2018 10:21

I just ordered a McDonald's breakfast and was holding my tray whilst steering DS's pram to an available seat.

Someone didn't hear me say excuse me and my pram hit on their chair.

My drink (large sprite of all things), just went flying and fell on the floor.

The young bloke sitting there was very Hmm

Anyway, I told the cleaning lady "I'm so sorry but there's been a spillage"

She said "Yes I can see that with my eyes girl".

So I sat down, mortified. I usually just let these types of scenarios go but for some reason, I looked up and a few people were looking at me Confused

So I messaged DH

Anyway, 5 minutes later the woman comes over and asks me "What size sprite was that?"

I said a large please.

She said loudly, for the whole section to hear "There's no way that was a large sprite. There would be more liquid. That was more of a medium".

So I said it was a large, I have the receipt (I handed it to her).

She looked at it with disdain and then hurried off, came back 10 mins later with my sprite and say there you go then.

AIBU to be a bit embarrassed Blush

I usually let embarrassing scenarios go over my head but loads of people are still looking up for some reason and the cleaning lady just complained loudly to a colleague "I just don't have the energy today man"

Because none of the people in maccy d's have ever had an accident?! I can't believe how rude they were and how no one helped you.

PrivateDoor · 26/06/2018 11:43

Maybe if the staff member had been a bit more on the ball, she could have assisted you to the table and avoided the whole thing happening in the first place! Accidents happen. I don't think she is all bad or she wouldn't have replaced the drink for you - she really didn't have to. However I can understand why you were embarrassed. I hope the rest of your day is better!

BertBox · 26/06/2018 11:46

I. Ant believe how many people are desperate to tell you it was your fault! It was an accident. I'm sure they've cleared up worse. Everyone's tetchy because of the heat - enjoy your Sprite!

BertBox · 26/06/2018 11:46

*cant. Though I do have any problems at the moment... 🐜

TrudeauGirl · 26/06/2018 11:48

Accidents happen, don't beat yourself up, ignore people being nasty to you, must be the heat making everyone moody today.

BaldricksTrousers · 26/06/2018 11:49

YABU for drinking a large Sprite for breakfast. Grim

QuestionableMouse · 26/06/2018 11:49

Replacing spilled drinks is standard practice in McDonald's. It's also good customer service which sounds sorely lacking here. If I see someone with a pram, I'd always offer to carry the tray over for them.

@Clevs sorry about your bad experience. The screens are a bit touchy and it sounds like he should have restarted the frozen one for you. Takes a couple of minutes to do.

QuestionableMouse · 26/06/2018 11:51

@PrivateDoor she did, because its company policy to replace spilled drinks.

dingit · 26/06/2018 11:58

That's awful. In our macdonalds, and I'm talking large grotty SE London Town, they help people with prams, i.e. bring over the food.

HyggeHeart · 26/06/2018 12:01

If it makes you feel any better I fell of the end of the running machine at my gym this week, after a shoelace coming undone! Now a bit bruised! These things happen to all of us, she was obviously in a grump before you even appeared in her morning and created a tiny bit of extra work for her :). Try not to take it to heart! Flowers

MrsICantSayMyName · 26/06/2018 12:03

@PaintTheTownInNeutrals one tip when u have the pram get a take away bag it is so much easier than trying to steer and hold a tray and then no spillages will happen Wink

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 26/06/2018 12:05

It was so busy there weren’t any seats within sight of the counter at breakfast time in McDonald’s? Weird!

YY yabu for having sprite for breakfast Wink. Other than that, the staff member does sound a bit stroppy. Nice of them to give you a free drink though I guess? I’d probably have been a bit Blush too but it isn’t the end of the world.

PS: does anyone else hate the abbreviation maccy’s or Maccy Dees? McDonald isn’t pronounced MacDonald. They’re different names. I should know, I used to live somewhere where there were a lot of Mc...s and it’s never pronounced Mac. The clue is in the spelling.

andanotherheheheheh · 26/06/2018 12:10

In my town, McDonalds people will carry your food to your table if you need help. :)

I'd have been embarrassed too. Ignore the mental replies on here, some people are so perfect.

I spilled cherry compote from my yoghurt on my cream carpet this morning and cried loads about it at the time (pregnant...). Accidents happen, some which cause lovely red stains Hmm. Don't worry about it, and have a lovely afternoon.

PaintTheTownInNeutrals · 26/06/2018 13:00

The only thing that struck me as off was a large Sprite for breakfast.

Really? That's the only thing that struck you as off

That’s so rude! When I tripped up the stairs in Costa and my drink and cake went flying they replaced both free of charge without me even asking. I was very impressed by how nice they were.

Aloethere · 26/06/2018 13:32

When the kids were small we were eating in a place that had bottles of ketchup on the tables. One of the dc wanted ketchup and my dh went to shake the bottle to get the ketchup out only the lid wasn't on probably. The lid flew off and ketchup spattered all over dhs face and in a 4 metre radius around us. It was quite a sight to behold. Dh was sat like this Shock with ketchup all over his face(while I pissed myself laughing) and the waitress rushed over with a dishcloth and started dabbing at his face.

I'm laughing now just thinking about it. Dh wanted the ground to swallow him at the time but he laughs about it now. Shit happens,

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 26/06/2018 14:00

OP, as a mother, you . should be looking after your health. What are you doing in McDonalds? They really don't have a high regard to cattle, forrests, recycling, they even use polystyrene. How will that help the world your child will inherit?

TwoBlueShoes · 26/06/2018 14:07

Mountains, because sometimes mums need a break. They need to get out of the house. They need food that they don’t have to plan, shop for, cook and clean up. Sometimes they are in town for other reasons and feel hungry. I would guess the OP needs a little compassion today, so give it a try.

LeighaJ · 26/06/2018 14:10

I'd complain, her attitude was awful.

McDonald's can have some charming employees, we once had one throw ketchup packets at us in Spain. Charming!!!

December2018 · 26/06/2018 14:12

She sounds incredibly rude to be honest hun, yeah I would be complaining and I'd ask for a personal apology!
At least it wasn't all over anybody's head... I've done that before 😂🤭

AForegoneConclusion · 26/06/2018 14:17

Don't give it a second thought. Yes, it was a bit shit for the employee. Working in the food industry, spillages do happen -part of her job is to clean up when appropriate. It was sprite, not vomit. In a supermarket, customers often knock over products and then staff clean it up. It is part of the role. Not a fun part, but hey, that's work for you. A client spilled tea all over my office sofa the other day. I cleaned it up. I would rather not have, but she was a client and it was an accident. I certainly didn't bitch and moan about it!

QuestionableMouse · 26/06/2018 14:21

@Mountainsoutofmolehills

McDonald's uses no polystyrene and hasn't for years.

McDonald's is one of the best fast food places for recycling. 99% of the cups are recycled, along with most of the plastic used. The used cooking oil is recycled into bio fuel. All of the cardboard is sent off to be recycled too. We're also changing to paper straws rather than plastic.

McDonald's only uses British (and Irish) beef and farms are held to strict standards.

You might want to check your facts in future before throwing out wild accusations.
