AIBU to be mortified? I'm feeling so embarrassed

I just ordered a McDonald's breakfast and was holding my tray whilst steering DS's pram to an available seat.

Someone didn't hear me say excuse me and my pram hit on their chair.

My drink (large sprite of all things), just went flying and fell on the floor.

The young bloke sitting there was very Hmm

Anyway, I told the cleaning lady "I'm so sorry but there's been a spillage"

She said "Yes I can see that with my eyes girl".

So I sat down, mortified. I usually just let these types of scenarios go but for some reason, I looked up and a few people were looking at me Confused

So I messaged DH

Anyway, 5 minutes later the woman comes over and asks me "What size sprite was that?"

I said a large please.

She said loudly, for the whole section to hear "There's no way that was a large sprite. There would be more liquid. That was more of a medium".

So I said it was a large, I have the receipt (I handed it to her).

She looked at it with disdain and then hurried off, came back 10 mins later with my sprite and say there you go then.

AIBU to be a bit embarrassed Blush

I usually let embarrassing scenarios go over my head but loads of people are still looking up for some reason and the cleaning lady just complained loudly to a colleague "I just don't have the energy today man"

Jesus Christ people, it was an accident. It happens. There was no need for the cleaning lady to be rude even if it was a pain to clean up.

I'd be tempted to complain but I wouldn't worry too much about people looking - it'll all be forgotten in 10 minutes.

Butterflyrosebud · 26/06/2018 10:44

Dying for a sausage and egg McMuffin after reading this.

tictoc76 · 26/06/2018 10:46

People spill drinks all the time - if anyone is staring it’s because there really isn’t anything interesting going on in their life’s. Enjoy your breakfast - would love one right now

JaretsGirlfren · 26/06/2018 10:46

op seriously, don’t worry! I work in a large cafe in a department store, people spill all the time and I make sure I’m extra nice to them because they’re usually embarrassed and because everyone has done it at some point and also because it’s my job to make customers feel comfortable and want to come back! Ignore the rude woman, or complain, just don’t feel embarrassed!

CluedoAddict · 26/06/2018 10:47

I am surprised they have you a free one. Here you have to pay again if you spill your drink.

TheCheeseStandsAlone · 26/06/2018 10:48

I used to work in a cafe and every now and then there would be a spill. Sometimes a major one. It's just part of the job.

The 'guilty' party would usually be absolutely mortified so we'd tease them gently, "It's all right, we get quite a few clumsy people in here", lots of laughter and sometimes even paper towels for their clothes. It would all come good in the end. And yes we would replace their drinks free of charge. Accidents happen!

That woman was rude and she lost an opportunity to actually connect with a customer, turning a negative event into a positive interaction.

I remember ordering at McDonald's once with a pushchair and the server told me to wait while he carried my tray for me. Friendly AND proactive!

lostinjapan · 26/06/2018 10:48

Well at least they were nice enough to give you a free drink. For that, I'd probably let the rudeness go.

Drchinnery · 26/06/2018 10:49

It's more irritating that no one bothered to help you when you clearly had your hands full yet are happy to complain or stare!

I would complain though she has no right to be rude, and shouldn't be a cleaner if cleanings such an issue for her. She's paid to deal with stuff like that!

TwoBlueShoes · 26/06/2018 10:52

They’re usually really nice about accidents in McDonalds. The cleaning lady was off. I’d just forget about it. It’s really not a big deal.

FriedEggs1 · 26/06/2018 10:57

Oh OP, one day you'll laugh about this. If I was there I'd be helping you mop up, not staring at you like those bloody shithead morons. You'll feel better about it tomorrow Smile

MrsEricBana · 26/06/2018 10:58

Ah don't worry. It was an accident, you apologised, she was rude. All the other people were probably thinking was - "What's happened? Glad I didn't do that!" rather than judging you. I'd be miffed about being accused of lying over the drink size, but again her rude not you.

Ah everyone here saying it's the OP's fault needs to calm their tits. Honestly.

Oh, I've been dying for an opportunity to post one of my favourite images Grin

Although I do sympathise with OP a lot - shit happens, don't sweat it. A mixer drink like that will have cost them in the region of 5p to replace, I think the Clown can afford it. Cleaners get paid to clean. I've seen much worse in Maccy's, believe me.

StroppyWoman · 26/06/2018 11:08

The only thing that struck me as off was a large Sprite for breakfast.
Dude.
Sugar rush.

YouOKHun · 26/06/2018 11:11

Accidents happen. You might find people were looking at you because they were thinking ‘poor girl, can happen to the best of us’ or ‘that McDs working is being really rude I wonder if she’s going to say anything’ rather than judging you.

Tomatoesrock · 26/06/2018 11:12

Yanbu to be embarrassed but she was very rude. A member of staff should have carried your tray, unless it was crazy busy. My Dniece worked there during uni, the staff were trained to look out for customers with a pram, or disability, anyone needing extra help.

She was probably having a bad day. Ignore her or email if it makes you feel better x

beluga425 · 26/06/2018 11:14

5p? more like 0.5p!
Everyone has forgotten already. The cleaning lady is having her own bad day. Just enjoy your sprite and your healthy breakfast and have s lovely day.

Loonoon · 26/06/2018 11:15

I agree that normally people are nice about accidents like that. If the cleaning lady was arsey perhaps she was having a bad day. Perhaps she’s just a mean cow, perhaps you are feeling extra sensitive today, whichever, I would let it go. You drink was replaced and you didn’t have to clean it up. You are winning at life OP.

KeefBurtain · 26/06/2018 11:20

I was with DS and dropped my tray in Costa and my hot chocolate and carrot cake fell on the floor (I’d already put the pram at the table)

It was 2 days after my miscarriage and I just burst into tears. The worker sat me down and brought me over a large HC, another slice of cake and a free muffin for DS, gave me a cuddle and said not to worry, it was an accident.

I would put in a complaint. That’s not decent customer service. Even if they thought you’d done it on purpose it’s no way to treat a paying customer.

MadeleineMaxwell · 26/06/2018 11:22

5p? more like 0.5p!

Depends if you also factor in the cost of the cup, lid, straw, electricity for mixer tap and wage of person to bring it.

Either way, it's dirt cheap and standard customer service.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 26/06/2018 11:24

The thing is, it's the cleaning person's job to clean - that's the reason they are there - and yes, sometimes that's going to be a drink all over the floor, because it's a restaurant.

I've taken to getting stuff in the bag when I have the kids (out of buggies, but a bit young to leave at the table alone, and I can't carry two trays. But in the old days, when I had kids/buggies/whatever, a member of staff always offered to take my tray for me when I was in Macdonalds - they were very good about it - perhaps times have changed, or perhaps, given the attitude of the cleaning staff, it's a bad macdonalds, with a bad atmosphere, and as a result the employees aren't as nice as they are in other branches.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 26/06/2018 11:28

It was an accident, they happen. Ignore the nasty comments on here, they just want to make you feel more shit. The cleaner was in the wrong. She needs to shut up and get on with her job.
And really if you were struggling to carry the tray and push the pram they should have offered to carry it for you.

Clevs · 26/06/2018 11:32

I had a member of staff in McDonalds with an attitude problem a few days ago. I was using one of the self service machines and the screen had frozen on it. The machine next to it was out of order and a couple using the machine the other side had their receipt jammed. There was a member of staff unjamming it so when he finished I explained that my machine was not working. He replied with 'I can't do anything about that'. I replied by saying that I was just informing him (so he could start the process of getting it logged/fixed) and he repeated 'there's absolutely nothing I can do about it' as he walked off. I called after him and told him the machine was not gong to fix itself and then used the machine next to it that got jammed printing the receipt again🙄

cjferg · 26/06/2018 11:33

livestock, those gave me a laugh!

Once working at a very fancy drinks reception was carrying a tray of champagne flutes down some steps. Missed a step and they all went flying! Worst part was the steps were absorbent concrete or something so there was a big wet stain all night.

QuestionableMouse · 26/06/2018 11:40

As someone who works in that role, she was rude and you need to complain either to the store manager or to head office.

I'd never speak to a customer like that and she shouldn't have either. So sorry you had such a horrible experience.

Oh and if you still have your receipt, fill in the survey and mention the way you were treated.
