I'm watching Escape to the Country (don't judge me, we all have our vices) and the presenter is saying to the house hunters "there's permission to knock through and make a walk-in wardrobe"

Wife looks estactic and husband says proudly "oh that's good, there's never enough room for my wife's clothes"

This happens every time (well nearly) on ETTC and Wanted Down Under. "Ooh look, Kev, there's a walk in wardrobe, that's my clothes storage sorted"

And I the only women who only needs a small wardrobe and chest of drawers? How much space do you need? I'm starting to feel inadequate!

Walk-in Wardrobes are very handy for storing other stuff; arts & crafts or children's presents or spare towels or shower gel, etc.

I feel like I never buy anything & I still have tonnes of shoes & clothes. I have worn almost all of it in last 6m. The not-worn things are my only winter coat, dresses suitable for interviews or weddings, a few sports things I may or may not be able to use again.

arranfan · 24/06/2018 17:06

I read news item exhorting people to buy better quality clothes so they'd last longer because the journalist reported that most items last < 2yrs.

I have clothes that I wear (and not just for cleaning/gardening) that are >30 years old and very good condition.

I don't need a walk-in wardrobe and hate shopping for either clothes or shoes. I suspect that there's a substantial number of us who are like this.

Catchuptv · 24/06/2018 17:08

I would hate to have that many clothes that I need a 'walk in wardrobe'. It's such a bloody waste of money.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/06/2018 17:11

You have a wardrobe and drawers, multiple drawers!!
I hate clothes shopping
All my clothes fit in one under the bed drawer. I have 2 pairs of shoes, a pair of trainers and a pair of flip flops for summer.

I don't own a handbag, purse or make up. I feel like if I had to pack in a hurry I could be packed in seconds

I don't think there's a moral imperative either way.

It seems, as ever, women judging women.

It's fine to like clothes, to buy clothes, to have halls full of frocks and shoes. Equally, it's fine to have three utilitarian outfits. Both models of dressing the body are equally valid.

What's not fine is if one party cannot play the game and is made to feel bad because they can't.

Lellikelly26 · 24/06/2018 22:26

I have got a lot of clothes, bit of a compensation thing for me. It’s a complete burden to have more than you need. I have to swap summer and winter wardrobes to fit them in, forget what I have and dread to think how much money I have wasted.
I’m trying to get better and have thrown lots out and buy less.
I wish I could have one wardrobe and a few pairs of shoes.
How do you dress for different occasions though? So coats for example you need a smart one for work (winter and spring), casual, dog walking, jacket for going out etc? And the same with shoes. I can’t imagine only having 2 pairs like one poster on this thread. How do you have shoes for different occasions if you only have 2 pairs?

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/06/2018 23:18

I never go any where that I can't get away with jeans t.shirt and trainers.
Other people dress up but I never do.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/06/2018 23:19

Also I have never owned a coat, ever.

Branleuse · 24/06/2018 23:22

I love clothes. I would love a walk in wardrobe

Who says there's a moral imperative. How are women being judged?

Actually, don't answer as I'm so bored by threads being hijacked by someone desperate to take offence. It's so tiresome.

Including underwear, all my clothes fit into two under-bed drawers (oh actually, plus one plastic box in the wardrobe of jumpers, camping/waterproof/outdoor clothes for when we go to the Lakes, and a ball gown I wheel out for work events). My OH has two under bed drawers and the whole wardrobe!

TumbleTussocks · 24/06/2018 23:30

Llelli - I live quite rurally and work from home. I hate going into town nowadays. Any socialising/going out is casual.

Nope.

I have almost zero interest in clothes or fashion. I hate shopping. I have never knowingly picked up a copy of Vogue in my life.

I spend my disposable income on cars and travelling, both of which I am much more interested in.

Chanelprincess · 24/06/2018 23:37

I like my bedroom being just for sleeping and relaxing so clothes, dressing table, make up etc belong out of the way in the dressing room. I'd feel the same regardless of how many clothes or shoes I own. I hate any unnecessary clutter in my bedroom.

1mouse2 · 24/06/2018 23:37

I think I have found mine and dd1s people here, dd2 on the other hand...

StillMedusa · 24/06/2018 23:57

One wardrobe and a chest of drawers here too. 5 pairs of shoes (Winter boots, ankle boots, uggs as slippers, skechers, and flip flops) But I do seem to have a LOT of coats.. work coat, winter coats, smart occasion coats, rain coats, lightweight jackets! Luckily we have a large wet room downstairs where they all live!

My DD2 on the other hand has a ridiculous amount of clothes ... she loves clothes, spends wisely on good quality stuff but could fill a walk in closet and more. Unfortunately since she returned home to live she's in the box room so most of her stuff is in the garage!!! Grin

I have way too many clothes collected over the past 30 years.
A complete double wardrobe of size 10, (which has a lot of formal workwear from back when I did that sort of job & was my size until I hit 40) about the same of size 12 (which seems to have been the time of my life when I kept having to go to 'occasions' so lots of dresses suitable for weddings/parties etc..& then I have about half as much in size 14 which fits me now. The size 14 stuff is far more casual.
Sometimes the 12s fit me as I hover between the two sizes so I can't make myself get rid of them.
I've only kept the good stuff, but I'm trying to make myself let the size 10s go because I can't imagine it ever fitting again.
Honestly thinking about it at least half of it I would think is too 'young' looking for me now even if it still fit me.

I grew up with 2 to 3 changes of second hand clothes & 1 pair of footwear at a time as about the most I ever had (sometimes 1 change + 2 sets of school uniform) and as soon as I had wages I bought myself options.

Shoes & boots though I'd say I probably have about 60 pairs & a dozen handbags that basically match all the footwear.
Flats, mid heels, fancy heels, boots etc...
Some of them are over 20 years old though, but all really good quality & all the footwear gets used.

I got bigger, but my feet didn't so they all still fit.

I love the theory of having a minimal wardrobe & every time I've changed size I've told myself that is what I will do, but somehow by the time I've got the coat to match, the right shoes, the matching whatever else to complete the outfit, the different weight top so the trousers can be more than one season I'm back to bulging wardrobes, drawers & underbed storage full of the other seasons clothes.

blackdoggotmytongueagain · 25/06/2018 02:46

I once left a job to move country and was gone for 7 years. When I moved back, my old boss asked me if I wanted my old job back. Not a lot of options out there so I reluctantly agreed. I’d been back a few weeks when she said ‘you used to wear that top last time you worked here too.’
It wasn’t particularly memorable either. A boring claret coloured plain long sleeved top.
That was now 9 years ago. I think it is still in my wardrobe somewhere. It’s older than my children, and some of those are adults.

LornaMorna80 · 25/06/2018 03:18

I don’t have loads- I just hate too much clutter, ie furniture. I turned the box room into a walk in wardrobe/dressing/makeup room. One small wall with a hanging rail, shoes underneath. Dressing table on opposite wall.

moira123io · 25/06/2018 03:39

I have tons. Way too many. But so what. I want them and I can afford them, I'm not going to feel guilty Grin

kmc1111 · 25/06/2018 06:54

I have a large wardrobe, but I have a very large walk in closet. I have the space, and I like having everything spread out and somewhat on display so I actually see what I have and visualise how it goes together. Stops me reaching for the same half dozen things out of habit. If I have to dig through a chest of drawers searching for something, most likely it barely gets worn.

I expect a lot of people with smaller wardrobes are the same. They might be able to squeeze it into a chest of drawers, but if you have the space spare a walk in closet is nicer.
