I'm watching Escape to the Country (don't judge me, we all have our vices) and the presenter is saying to the house hunters "there's permission to knock through and make a walk-in wardrobe"

Wife looks estactic and husband says proudly "oh that's good, there's never enough room for my wife's clothes"

This happens every time (well nearly) on ETTC and Wanted Down Under. "Ooh look, Kev, there's a walk in wardrobe, that's my clothes storage sorted"

And I the only women who only needs a small wardrobe and chest of drawers? How much space do you need? I'm starting to feel inadequate!

Maybe depends on type of job too. I have a work side and every day whereas if you don’t work somewhere that needs formal dress you don’t need that. Plus stuff for funerals, suit for court hearings and interviews, thin dressing gown that is great in hospital etc. So very occasionally needed items but would be expensive or tricky to get in a hurry so they stay. Winter coat. Stuff for outdoor activity holiday, again take up room. Old clothes to paint/garden in.

mayandjuniper · 24/06/2018 13:51

Nope same here! I'm really in to fashion and love clothes but I still manage to fit everything in a chest of drawers with a tiny bit of hanging space in the wardrobe for ironed stuff. It's just pandering to stereotypes. Plus a lot of the people on ETTC are loaded.

seafret · 24/06/2018 13:51

It does seem to have become something of a cliche. I don't have masses either and wouldn't want to. But I would like a bedroom big enough to have a comfy chair by a big window!

I hate the episodes where the woman jumps in and claims 3/4 of the storage and the husband just gets a drawer in the corner whether he likes it or not. I can't imagine having that attitude to my DH.

FlaviaAlbia · 24/06/2018 13:52

I always wondered if clothes get dusty in walk in wardrobes. I mean, if you have so many you need an entire room for them then you won't be wearing each outfit very often and surely covering each outfit removes the point of having it all open?

2gorgeousboys · 24/06/2018 14:03

I dont spend a huge amount of money on clothes but i've got a couple of wardrobes plus 2 chests of drawers. I have clothes for different parts of my life. Smart clothes for work, weekend wear, walking and camping clothes, wedding/occasion wear. Then there's summer v winter clothes.

Gottagetmoving · 24/06/2018 14:14

I don't have many clothes or shoes. I hate shopping and I hate feeling 'dressed Jo's
I live in jeans or shorts and have a few tops but do have a couple of going out outfits which I can't wait to get out of when I get home.
My friends post pictures of their holidays and have a few clothing changes very day and different every day. I couldn't do that! Grin

Gottagetmoving · 24/06/2018 14:14

Dressed UP.

justilou1 · 24/06/2018 14:36

I loathe doing laundry. Why bother buying more shit to wash? (Or never wear anyway?) Since fashion has never catered for short women with boobs and a short waist, I have resigned myself to having a figure that is described as dumpy at best and concentrate on my quite good for my age skin (sunscreen) and sense of humour.

User17890 · 24/06/2018 14:44

It’s like those women on Housewives of Beverly Hills, that have 500 handbags and 2,000 pairs of shoes lol, they have more than enough clothes to last them a lifetime and they are still shopping for more each week! After having to clean out so much crap including clothes that I no longer wear. I have no desire to horde. There will never be a shortage of clothes, shoes etc. So I have maintained a very small wardrobe of clothing that I actually wear, knowing that I can always buy more, if needed.

SumerisIcumenin · 24/06/2018 14:47

No, there are lots of us, it’s just that not owning roomfuls of clothing means that we don’t prattle on about them, so you don’t know how many thousands of us there are.

SheilaHammond · 24/06/2018 14:48

Half a wardrobe as I share with DH. One chest if drawers. Some winter clothes and boots in storage bag in airing cupboard.

DieAntword · 24/06/2018 14:50

I’m fat. Like 30lbs ago (I’m losing weight) I was morbidly obese fat. I don’t see the point in having lots of clothes since I’m not going to look good in them.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 24/06/2018 14:50

I have a walk in wardrobe Blush
I have A LOT of shoes. And coats. And bags. And sunglasses....

OhTheRoses · 24/06/2018 14:54

I too think it depends on job. I have to be relatively smart for work: winter 4 dresses, black trousers, black skirt, grey trousers, 6-8 tops, selection of smart fitted cardigans and jackets; similar for summer but its navy not black.

Plus summer dresses, jeans, cropped trousers, cpl nice tunics, sweaters, etc.

Smart winter coat, duvet coat, casual parker, coloured coat, formal raincoat, fun raincoat, waterproof, shearling gilet.

Evening and occasion stuff.

Long boots, ankle boots, snow boots, black loafers, black courts, beige courts, smart lace-ups, evening shoes, then summer shoes.

I don't even think I have that much. I have the 9ft wardrobe in the bedroom. DH has the dressing room! I would have much less if I didn't go to work.

Sevendown · 24/06/2018 14:56

1 rail and 2 drawers does me.

Ido store some out of season stuff away though.

ShesABelter · 24/06/2018 14:58

I dont either.

Freshprincess · 24/06/2018 14:59

I wear stuff till it falls apart so I probably have a lot compared to some. Currently wearing a summer top I bought for my honeymoon 16 years ago.

I boggle at some of the S&B threads where people have monthly clothes budgets. dont really enjoy shopping, I buy stuff online when I need it.

NobodysMot · 24/06/2018 15:01

I have a lot but only because I don't throw them out.

My xh had as many as I did for the same reason.

Fed · 24/06/2018 15:05

Maybe age is a factor? I'm 60 and weigh the same as I did 40 years ago so I never get rid of stuff because it doesn't fit. Not that I wear 40 year old clothes, but I do have a suitcase full of things from the 70s/ 80s which I can't bear to part with.

ReanimatedSGB · 24/06/2018 15:06

I have a lot, because I do various different things I need different outfits for. So I've got stuff for just knocking around the house; stuff to wear for work (which has to be blouse and skirt/smart-ish trousers) stuff for other kind of work eg talks and events (less frumpy tops and trousers) a few things for clubbing, my Morris kit... I don't spend much - first port of call is always a charity shop when I need something new or something specific - and some of my clothes are decades old. Today I'm wearing shorts that I cut down from a pair of ripped jeans in about 2006 and a sleeveless top I bought in Austria in 1985.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/06/2018 15:08

I have tons of clothes. I’m chronically ill and have put more and more weight on over the past 10years. I hope one day to fit into my stuff. I’ve just had a hysterectomy and I’ve deffo been made far iller from that so maybe I will be wearing all my old clothes. I definitely hope so.

Zaphodsotherhead · 24/06/2018 15:11

It's those programmes. They always feature people who've got £674,000 to spend and want a country cottage with an acre for the pony for the grandchildren, two kitchens and more bathrooms than people. They never show anyone with £120,000 who just wants a two up, two down that doesn't let the water in.

diddl · 24/06/2018 15:12

We need more wardrobe space.

It's shoes, boots, jackets & coats for me, workshirts & shoes for husband that take up the space.

SwedishEdith · 24/06/2018 15:17

I don't throw much away, so I have clothes from 20 years ago, along with current clothes. I also have work clothes, messing g about clothes and going o u t clothes, which don't overlap.

Me too. If I followed that 'only keep what you've worn in the last 12 months' rule, that'd be 3/4 of my wardrobe.

MrsClutterworth · 24/06/2018 15:17

I have more pyjamas than I do actual clothes to wear out which says a lot 😂!
