I'm watching Escape to the Country (don't judge me, we all have our vices) and the presenter is saying to the house hunters "there's permission to knock through and make a walk-in wardrobe"

Wife looks estactic and husband says proudly "oh that's good, there's never enough room for my wife's clothes"

This happens every time (well nearly) on ETTC and Wanted Down Under. "Ooh look, Kev, there's a walk in wardrobe, that's my clothes storage sorted"

And I the only women who only needs a small wardrobe and chest of drawers? How much space do you need? I'm starting to feel inadequate!

I don’t do fashion. I have a fairly small wardrobe when compared to my friends. About eight work dresses and jackets, four dog walking/ everyday tunics and leggings, a few skirts and tops and about six jumpers. A few summer dresses then just special things like beachwear, hill walking gear, sailing gear. About four evening dresses and the same in cocktail dresses. Most are quite old. I replace them if they are damaged are wear out not just because I want something new.
Shoes I do comfort and including work heels and specific purpose shoes I can’t have more than about 15 pairs.

Floottoot · 24/06/2018 15:24

seafret, we had a 2 storey extension built last summer, and it created a new, bit bedroom for us (4.5m x 4.5m). One of my wants was to be able to have a comfy reading chair by the window; I've got the space now, but haven't chosen the chair yet. 😊

oohyoudevilyou · 24/06/2018 15:24

My stuff fits in a regular sized chest of 4 drawers and half of a double door wardrobe. I don't buy very many clothes - just replacements for worn out things and the occasional outfit for something specific like a wedding or party. I tend to wear the same 10 or so items, and the washer is usually on daily. I also can't understand why some women need walk-in wardrobes or spare bedrooms to store their clothes in .

" I also can't understand why some women need walk-in wardrobes or spare bedrooms to store their clothes in"

Because they have a lot of clothes?

LockedOutOfMN · 24/06/2018 15:27

I am ruthless at throwing / giving away clothes. We have a 3 metre wardrobe which is about 80% full, with my dresses and skirts and a few shirts (I don't wear shirts often) plus 2 suits belonging to DH (he wears casual clothes for work) and his shirts.

At the bottom of the wardrobe are 4 stacking boxes of shoes, handbags and belts. DH has one pair of his smartest shoes and a few belts in there, but everything else is mine.

At the side of the wardrobe are 1 metre floor to ceiling shelves. This is where I keep all of my day to day clothes: exercise stuff on the 2 bottom shelves, work stuff on the 2 middle shelves, weekend wear on the shelf above, and jumpers on the very top one (we live in a largely warm climate).

Then I have a wide, waist-height chest of drawers with underwear, tights, and pyjamas.

DH has a tall chest of drawers with all of his clothes, but they don't fit so they end up piled up on top. He also moves clothes for colder weather like multiple pairs of jeans and jackets to a "spare" cupboard outside the bedroom when it's not cold enough to need them.

We have a large hall cupboard with our coats and regularly used shoes, and in winter I put my scarves, hats and gloves and the kids' in there too along with our boots (DH never wears more than a coat).

I don't think I have too many clothes and I could easily buy and wear more. Most of it is down to not having time to go shopping (or to prefer spending free time doing other things). DH does have quite a lot of clothes, but he wears them all. He does throw away broken socks and boxers straightaway and will do a weed out once or twice a year of T shirts that have gone past it. He also owns only the pairs of shoes he needs from day to day plus one very formal pair for weddings, etc.

LockedOutOfMN · 24/06/2018 15:28

I think many people look forward to having more storage space when they move. This is probably what they're referring to when they get excited to see storage in potential new homes? Although I agree, it's often alluded to as space for the woman's clothes, etc.

WingsOnMyBoots · 24/06/2018 15:30

No. I find it hard to find shoes I really love that are comfortable. There's nothing unusual about my feet so I don't get how you can have dozens of pairs and they all fit well.

As for clothes, I just can't cope with tons of them! Also, I don't have the space to store them properly.

I really feel life is easier if you don't have too much stuff.

nightwispa · 24/06/2018 15:30

I have my:

Western autumn/winter clothes
Western spring/summer clothes
Western formal clothes

Eastern autumn/winter clothes
Eastern spring/summer clothes
Eastern formal clothes

With shoes/jewellery that would go with each 'look' or style.

I'd LOVE a walk in wardrobe but it's not happening anytime soon I'm afraid.

nightwispa · 24/06/2018 15:31

And I have an annoying habit of collecting vintage fabric too which eats away at my clothes storage.

HushabyeMountainGoat · 24/06/2018 15:33

No, i like to have a cull twice a year. Store winter/ summer clothes in the attic. Anything i haven't worn that year or is looking tatty gets binned or sent to the charity shop. I only want clothes that i actually would wear reguarly.

The80sweregreat · 24/06/2018 15:34

I don’t have much either! I hate clothes shopping.

Kismett · 24/06/2018 15:39

I used to have a walk-in closet and miss it dearly. It wasn't just for clothes, it was all sorts of storage and held so much. I found it very easy to see and get at everything.

I've had to downsize my clothes a lot since moving and I'd like to say I don't miss any of it, but I do sometimes. I didn't need all of it, but I liked the freedom of having more storage space.

Allegorical · 24/06/2018 15:39

I have loads and am a bit of a hoarder and find it difficult to throw things away but often dig things out I haven’t worn in ages and always have something for an occasion that I can dig out.
My mate has a tiny capsule wardrobe and is always having a clear out. But I think she wastes a lot of money in the process. She throws out perfectly good clothes and certainly buys more than I do. So I don’t think being minima is all it’s cracked up to be.

socraties1234 · 24/06/2018 15:40

I have quite a lot of clothes, my problem is I don't like throwing stuff, some of my clothes are 20+ years old and there all different sizes.
I would love some one to come and organise me and get rid of 50% of my clothes.

ItsNachoCheese · 24/06/2018 15:42

I dont have masses of clothes i only have 4/5 different outfits and a few pairs of shoes but they do me well

NewToCats · 24/06/2018 15:45

I have 5 tesco crates of clothing. 1 tesco crate of footwear. I would love to do a clear out. Some of it I never wear and I have had for 20 years.
Big question though, should I get rid of my
ball gown (I'm never going to wear it)
Favourite t-shirt (I can't wear it because it might fall apart in the wash)
Sandals I had made for me (but actually never liked)
And so the list goes on .....

happymummy12345 · 24/06/2018 15:46

I don't have many at all. I've got 1 pair of trainers, 1 pair of flat boots, a few pairs of ballet pumps that I consider daily shoes. Then I have a few pairs of going out shoes that I wear on special occasions.
Same with clothes. I've got a couple of dresses which are going out clothes. Then some jeans/ trousers, and tops/ jackets. I don't have that many at all. For round the house I've got a few pairs of tracksuit bottoms and I tend to wear dh's old t shirts cause they're loose on me, not more fitted like my own indoor t shirts, so I find them more comfy.

Cyw2018 · 24/06/2018 15:50

I've never had loads of clothes, and at the moment I'm 4 1/2 months after giving birth to DD and breastfeeding so I have fewer than ever.

Current wardrobe consists of...
3 breastfeeding t shirts (plus 2 3/4 sleeve tops for cooler weather)
Pair of jeans
Pair of shorts
Full zip light weight fleece
Trainers, flip flops and wellies (feet have increased in size due to pregnancy)
Running kit (Capri bottoms, sports bra & vest top)

That's it!!

It's actually quite liberating, although from a practical laundry point a few more items would be useful.

I also had a very small maternity wardrobe.

I certainly will be considering more carefully what I buy once my weight is back to normal and I'm no longer breastfeeding.

Happyhippy45 · 24/06/2018 15:57

I don't have many clothes and very few pairs of shoes. I don't have to "dress up" for work or many social events so that cuts down on the clutter. One wedding in 3 years is about my lot. I can't wear heels and have been told I dress like a man. Not in a mean way.....I do. Fleece jacket, plainish top and hiking boots is my comfort zone.
My dh on the other hand has MUCH more clothes and shoes than me.....but wears the same things all the time too.

Doingreat · 24/06/2018 16:54

I admire OP and others on this thread who have said they don't have a huge wardrobe. In fact I envy you all. It makes life so much easier and i am currently trying to declutter my possessions. I am not as bad as some women I know but feel like my life would be so much easier and freer if i had less stuff. I used to love shopping often feel overwhelmed by how much I own. No one needs a ton of stuff.

Lucyccfc · 24/06/2018 16:55

I would love a walk in wardrobe. I have 3 double wardrobes and 2 chest of drawers. I don't hoard and have regular clear outs for the charity shop.

My worst habit is buying coats, jackets and trainers (I have about 20 pairs).

JacquesHammer · 24/06/2018 16:59

I don’t but I’ve just created a dressing room for my 11 year old DD Smile

She absolutely loves it.

ElinorCadwaller · 24/06/2018 17:00

Nope, I have 6 pairs of shoes and that includes wellies and walking boots. My clothes fit in a few drawers and half a wardrobe and I'd still like to declutter! I love fashion and dress carefully but I can't be doing with looking after things I don't wear

lucydogz · 24/06/2018 17:03

I hate clothes shopping. When I get shabby I go to White Stuff and buy more, but only to look reasonable. I'm impressed by how coordinated some women are - matching bag , shoes and outfit. And jewellery.

Sallystyle · 24/06/2018 17:03

I don't have many clothes. They really don't interest me. I hate clothes shopping.

Shoes, well, shoes are my downfall. I have a hell of a lot of them.
