To have not realised that Cuba is in the Caribbean?

Watching Blind Date tonight and one of the couples is on their date in Cuba. I commented to DH did he ever fancy visiting somewhere like that? He said what, the Caribbean? I said no, South America. DH then informs me that Cuba is a Caribbean island and despite showing me on the map I still can't get my head around it!

Tell me I'm not the only one whose geographical knowledge is hopeless Blush

Totally thought Dunkirk was in Scotland Blush

RJnomore1 · 23/06/2018 22:05

I was in Cuba earlier this year and was surprised to find out it was about 100 miles from Florida!

ShatnersBassoon · 23/06/2018 22:07

Dunkirk is in Nottingham. Ça c'est vrai.

RJnomore1 · 23/06/2018 22:07

Inverness, loch ness, Alness- all the ness places are in Scotland.

Except Skegness.

ilovesooty · 23/06/2018 22:08

Surely anyone with any historical knowledge would know that Dunkirk isn't in Scotland?

ShatnersBassoon · 23/06/2018 22:08

Also Sheerness is not in Scotland.

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/06/2018 22:08

Dunkirk just sounds Scottish. It SHOULD be in Scotland. If you separate the name it means 'brown church'. That's not very French to me. Of course it's not French. It's been anglicised (or whatever the Scottish equivalent is).

There IS a sea between us and Eastern Europe! The North Sea.

We are an island, therefore surrounded by sea, and not connected by land to any part of Europe.

Thatsnotmypresident · 23/06/2018 22:09

Not Wrabness, which has the added Scottish twist of sounding a lot like Rab. C. Nesbit

swimbikerun123 · 23/06/2018 22:09

I explained to a friend once that I had to change flights in Miami for a connection to Mexico. She couldn't understand why I was flying via the US to get to Mexico (I could, it was cheaper then). Eventually she said, "but when I've been to Lanzarote, it was a straight flight and only a few hours."
I got the atlas out (pre iPad days) and showed her that Mexico was not part of the Canary Islands.

Jesuisleloup · 23/06/2018 22:13

I wonder how many people who have been to the Canary Islands haven’t realised that they are off the coast of Western Sahara / Morocco and thus Africa ! But they speak Spanish Confused

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/06/2018 22:16

all the ness places are in Scotland Holderness, Kettleness, Orford Ness, Foulness, Shoeburyness?

Scaredycat2016 · 23/06/2018 22:18

Oooooooh I'm horrific at geography... Absolutely terrible!

Belgium isn't a country (it's sign posted in France so can't be a country in its own right... I still won't back down on this one!)

When did Senegal stop being part of Ireland

Panama isn't just a canal and a song by van halen

Dont even get me started on the whole Holland/Netherlands/Dutch debacle!!

Jesuisleloup · 23/06/2018 22:20

Senegal is in Ireland :) is it near Donegal ? Smile

SluttyButty · 23/06/2018 22:23

Sorry what? Have I imagined living on an island my entire life that's surrounded by sea? How did I not know we didn't have to cross water to get to Eastern Europe 🤔

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 23/06/2018 22:25

Also,

Why isn’t County Durham in Ireland?

EllenJanethickerknickers · 23/06/2018 22:26

Sooo.... we needed to rescue all those soldiers from the Germans at the start of WW2 from Scotland, did we? Confused

Scaredycat2016 · 23/06/2018 22:26

😂 That's exactly what the confusion was... Still not lived it down

ShatnersBassoon · 23/06/2018 22:27

@Sevendown
Please tell us what the Eastern Europe thing is. Is it something that will blow our minds?

EllenJanethickerknickers · 23/06/2018 22:28

We have to cross water to get to Western Europe, but there isn't another sea before we Eastern Europe, just that pesky Iron Curtain to get through.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 23/06/2018 22:29

*before we get to Eastern Europe

Sevendown · 23/06/2018 22:33

Sorry I realise in retrospect I didn’t give enough detail to be clear:

The person thought there was some sea of unknown name dividing eastern and Western Europe ie they thought Romanian and Bulgarian migrants had to cross a sea rather than a continent to get to France/Germany.

overnightangel · 23/06/2018 22:33

I lost count of the number of people at uni who assumed as I was from carlisle I’d sound Scottish (bad geography) or Welsh (name confused with Cardiff)

Greenteandchives · 23/06/2018 22:34

I only recently found out that Mexico was in North America not Central America.
