AIBU to be totally annoyed by cultural appropriation.
I read this today and though wtf!

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/newsbeat-44572555

I’m not a fan of kim but if she wants her hair in braids she can have her hair in braids?

Shouldn’t this be praised rather than attacked?
Is eating pasta cultural appropriation?

@tacolover then you are part of the problem. Why not encourage people to understand its history rather than feel offended over a dress?

TacoLover · 24/06/2018 12:32

"Look at Taco going on about social media. This is all identity politics bullshit.
More illogical nonsense: so if garments cause oppression then does removing a hijab remove oppression? Thought not."

What the fuck are you on about? In what way is talking about social media 'identity politics bullshit'? And when did I say removing a garment would remove oppression? Instead of calling my arguments bullshit and nonsense you could come up with a response that makes a bit of senseGrin

NotMeOhNo · 24/06/2018 12:32

It's attitudes like yours Taco that make that poster above not want to wear her own traditional garb because she inherited stronger Anglo features so she'd look "stupid".

Londonerlove · 24/06/2018 12:33

@tacolover not every Muslim woman sees the hijab as an oppressive item of clothing. They find it liberating.

Seriously?! She is part of what problem? The problem of white people being made to feel momentarily uncomfortable when they are accused of cultural appropriation, when all they want is Instagram likes? Yeah, huge problem, really needs sorting.

Let's face it, women of colour wearing traditional garments in the UK or the US are often outsiders. It is then of course a massive slap in the face to these women when white women wear the same thing, with no knowledge of its significance or cultural history, and are praised as fashionable for doing so.

...

I've been saying that people should research the background of a cultural garment this entire thread...

Sorry am breastfeeding, I wasn't clear. She didn't want to wear stuff from her non western background because she looks too white. She's clearly afraid smeone who didn't know her heritage (a stasi type like you) might accuse her of cultural appropriating.

BertrandRussell · 24/06/2018 12:35

Taco-you are on a hiding to nothing. I'm opting out of this thread-it is pointless. I suggest you join me.

BertrandRussell · 24/06/2018 12:37

Incidentally, I am pretty there are very few people indeed who would not be outraged by the use of "Stasi" to describe posters on this thread.

And then what, wear a sign? Add a twibbon? They have to genuflect to identity politics sufficiently for you. Given you said Kim K hasn't spoken publicly enough for you about whether she's read books about black culture.

Londonerlove · 24/06/2018 12:38

@taco I said that to you a few pages ago. In fact I’ve been saying it for bloody ages!!!!
If you feel they are not educated enough to wear a dress then bloody educate them rather than feeling offended.
I’ve also said numerous times that many people are not guilty of cultural appropriation or appreciation. It’s the grey area in the middle.

Bertrand depends where east Germans are on the pecking order of POC. Jews are white privileged apparently so I imagine Germans are a little higher...

TacoLover · 24/06/2018 12:41

@tacolover not every Muslim woman sees the hijab as an oppressive item of clothing. They find it liberating.

I know this because I am a Muslim woman and I wear oneGrin I wanted to know where this is actually relevant to the conversation because I never mentioned that removing garments would remove oppression.

It's attitudes like yours Taco that make that poster above not want to wear her own traditional garb because she inherited stronger Anglo features so she'd look "stupid".

Have you actually read my posts in this thread? The only thing I've been saying is that if a white person wants to wear something that oppressed minorities of the actual culture cannot wear without discrimination, then they should have the respect for that culture by finding out what the garment actually is, where it's from, etc. I have never said that people shouldn't wear anything.

Londonerlove · 24/06/2018 12:41

@may why only white people. So it can’t happen the other way round?

OP posts:
Londonerlove · 24/06/2018 12:46

@tacolover i genuinely don’t understand your point regarding the hijab and removing garments? Aren’t you just confirming what others have said. The fact that we should allow people to wear what they want and to not be accused of cultural appropriation. We are oppressing that person by asking them to remove it?

"Today 12:39 NotMeOhNo

Fuck me. I wonder whether you might want to reconsider that post.

NobodysMot · 24/06/2018 12:48

@jackfruitburger, I don't think it's hard to understand. White hair is seen as being smarter. I get that.

I have hair that is neither straight nor curly it is just frizzy. I wouldn't call it afro because I'm white, but it isn't curly. I was told at work to put a conditioner in my hair. I said ''uh right''.

NotMeOhNo · 24/06/2018 12:48

Well that was rude @BertrandRussell

You asked me about my views on the didgeridoo then left the thread after I laboriously typed it out for you?

TacoLover · 24/06/2018 12:49

Bertrand depends where east Germans are on the pecking order of POC. Jews are white privileged apparently so I imagine Germans are a little higher...
Jews are obviously an oppressed minority. But it's also quite obvious that if you have white skin then your problems are not going to be caused by your skin colour. They might be caused by anti semitism, but not by skin colour. That's what white privilege is, knowing that your problems in life will never be because of your skin colour. And going off many reports of concentration camps, the black Jews were treated the worst out of all Jews. So make of that what you will.

NotMeOhNo · 24/06/2018 12:50

Er no, I object to creating hierarchies of people based on their race. Which is something that "cultural appropriation" proponents are fine with, it appears.

NotMeOhNo · 24/06/2018 12:51

Taco white privilege goes a lot deeper than appearances.

Disco2018 · 24/06/2018 12:53

Is TacoLover username cultural appropriation as she is not Mexican and Mexicans are oppressed.

NobodysMot · 24/06/2018 12:54

Tangent now, but I look at posts made by insular British posters on the name board 'I'm a teacher oooh well then and 'Conor is a chav name'' and ''Niamh is a chav name'' and I see cultural misappropriation. Taking the names of our high kings and our legends and labelling them ''chav''. Whereas anything French is ooooh la la. I don't know if that's cultural appropriation per se but it's mis-labelling.

NotMeOhNo · 24/06/2018 12:55

What is a black Jew? See, I'm finding the intersection of identity politics and Jewishness rather anti-Semitic. Many European Jewish people have distinctive features, are they the black ones you're talking about? Or are you talking about North Africans? So the former have white privilege despite being visibly Jewish?

TheFirstMrsDV · 24/06/2018 12:55

Downthestrada are you asked those questions about your hair by white people? Genuine question because the only negative comments I have had about my children's natural hair is from black women.
I am talking about 26 years of experience with five kids.

I like their hair natural. I don't straighten it. I will braid or locs it. My youngest has a long afro atm.

Its black people who get didgy about it, not white ones. Not overtly anyway.
