someone telling my dog to f*ck off

Just been for a walk along the canal. The dog was a bit further ahead of me off the lead and it went off to the side. By the time i reached this point the dog had obviously disturbed someone who was sunbathing. They proceeded to tell the dog fuck off. I called the dog back and apologied and carried on walking. Not a word of acknowledgment from this stroppy sunbather. AIBU to be annoyed at someone telling my dog to fuck off?

My dog wouldn't have cared, he's quite used to bad language. He even uses it at me sometimes. I swear he said, "Fuck off" when he saw me with the hose and dog shampoo earlier.

Topseyt · 23/06/2018 19:25

I can understand the woman saying what she did, and it wouldn't bother me.

However, you are not a bad advert for dog walkers. Just take no notice of that. No dog owner in the world has an absolutely perfect dog, just as none of us are perfect and none of us have perfect children.

He is a dog. He has a mind of his own, and he isn't a machine you can switch on or off and control on a joystick. Things will happen occasionally, and you just have to deal with them, as you did.

Your mistake was posting in AIBU, where plenty of people are just looking for an excuse to stick their oar in and call you all sorts of things.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 23/06/2018 19:27

I was initially curious if people thought it was accepted to go all sweary over a dog.

Why wouldn’t it be? They’re only animals who haven’t a clue what you’re saying anyway, whether that’s “good boy” or “fuck off you mangy dog”.

Dogs are bothersome for a lot of people. Few actually want random dogs coming up to them sniffing/slobbering/harassing them because their owners aren’t looking after them. When it’s a continual pattern (because dog owners don’t have a good reputation due to those sorts of people), it’s a problem. A big one.

Greenyogagirl · 23/06/2018 20:11

Of course it’s ok to swear at a dog, what the actual fuck! Would you rather the sunbather said ‘oh fiddlesticks you gave me a fright there old boy, off you pop now!’ Probably was taken by surprise and swore. As most people would

Greenyogagirl · 23/06/2018 20:15

Topseyt, actually my dog is perfect. if I wasn’t 100% sure my dog was perfect off lead, he wouldn’t be off lead.

ifoundthebread · 23/06/2018 20:20

Ha someone has told my dog to 'go fuck yourself' 😂..... I had my dog on a lead at night and the dog didn't realise there was a man behind us until he walked past then the dog growled at him and that was his reply to the dogs growl 😂 😂 your dog was a pest, regardless of how or why. Getting told to fuck off is expected.

PortiaCastis · 23/06/2018 20:23

So you've startec a thread because someone told your mutt to fuck off hmm if your mutt had bothered me it'd be called a lot worse, keep the thing under control

nocoolnamesleft · 23/06/2018 20:30

Lucky your dog just disturbed an innocent sunbather and got sworn out, whilst not under proper control on a canal path. Instead of, for instance, bounding into someone and knocking them into the canal. Canal paths are not at all a good place for dogs to be anything other than under proper control.

Sequencedress · 23/06/2018 20:41

After one of my dc was bitten by a dog, as a result of their stupid owner not controlling them, it’s taken us over 10 years to get to the point where they can cope with being around controlled, well behaved dogs. I can’t stand irresponsible owners like you who ruin our days out by allowing your dog to bound around annoying people. FWIW, I absolutely adore dogs and grew up with them (gun dogs so very disciplined, well trained to the voice, controlled animals) so it’s not about hating dogs, it’s about idiot owners who shout ‘oh he’s friendly!’ When they should be recalling their dogs - I don’t give a shiny shite if he’s friendly, he’s bounded up to us and is getting in my dc’s face trying to ‘play’ while scaring the crap out of him!

TeasndToast · 23/06/2018 20:51

Yeah sorry OP if I was sunbathing and some random dog came sniffing or jumping over me I would have told it to fuck off. You not so much as you’re a person and I’m not a dick so while I would have been cross I wouldn’t have sworn at you. But the dog? Well I can let out my frustration as he can’t understand because, well, he’s a dog.

WTFnnoh · 23/06/2018 22:32

You’re entitled to have your dog off the lead in safe spaces. All these people saying put the dog on the lead are being unrealistic. Dogs benefit from time off lead to exhibit natural behaviours. It was a one off incident and a mistake. You didn’t see the sunbather and they overreacted. Just move on. I’m very careful that my dogs don’t annoy people while we’re out (put them on lead if I see group or kids approaching, call them into the edge to avoid cyclist etc) but it’s not a perfect world and accidents happen. I wouldn’t be wringing my hands over it or be getting butt hurt. The dog doesn’t know what was said.

mrcharlie · 26/06/2018 17:53

Why on earth would Joe public want to know your dog? Personally I'm beginning to loath both the dogs and the owners, so sick of the constant piss stains from lampposts, walls, sick of sun dried shit, freshly laid shit and of course the sweated shit that gets scraped over several feet.

A total fucking disgrace
Your dog, keep it on a leash and pick up its shit.
You wanted it...so get to it!!

mrcharlie · 26/06/2018 17:57

Sweated shit?? WTF ...smeared shit

BlitheringIdiots · 26/06/2018 17:59

Keep your dog on a lead. We don't all like dogs coming up annoying us. Nothing worse than a dog owner thinking they are Barbara Woodhouse. I really don't like dogs and wouldn't like a loose dog around me without an owner in sight.

LisaDz · 13/09/2025 07:21

Dog was just having a lovely walk, agree to be on a lead but it’s sometimes nice for them to have a stroll if nobody around but was a mistake obviously. If I were sunbathing and a dog approached me I’d be friendly and happy to see them. Unfortunately we have to share our planet with some assholes who don’t know a better way of communicating their annoyances. Sorry you got so much stick on this forum. Yes better to be off leash in a safer designated environment away from vile humans. Animals I think are often better! Take care.

Charltonstrek · 13/09/2025 09:17

I would have petted it and said hello as I like dogs just don't want to own one lol so yes wouldn't bother me

OrigamiOwls · 13/09/2025 09:19

@LisaDz - this thread is from 2018? The OP has probably moved on since the incident...

Puel · 13/09/2025 09:22

I love dogs but would I love a strange dog standing over me whilst I’m in a vulnerable position on the ground? No.

please tell me your dog is a Rottweiler or giant Irish wolfhound 😂😂

They should have told YOU to fuck off, to be fair. It's entirely your fault.

stoptheworldiwanna · 13/09/2025 09:24

JFC, 2018? Why do zombie threads keep reappearing?!

SleepIsEverything · 13/09/2025 09:25

I tell dogs to F off all the time in my head. Wouldn’t have the guts to do it in real life. It’s not the dogs’ fault anyway, it’s the shitty owners.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/09/2025 09:33

GreyhoundzRool · 23/06/2018 14:23

I’m a dog owner OP and it’s people like you who give the rest of us a bad name. If you can’t see the dog it’s not under control - whether that’s disturbing people, other dogs who may be nervous or having a poo which you would miss and not pick up!

Thank you.

Dogs should be on a lead in public spaces like the canal or play park or Street. Especially one who is not under your control and bothering other people.
