someone telling my dog to f*ck off

Just been for a walk along the canal. The dog was a bit further ahead of me off the lead and it went off to the side. By the time i reached this point the dog had obviously disturbed someone who was sunbathing. They proceeded to tell the dog fuck off. I called the dog back and apologied and carried on walking. Not a word of acknowledgment from this stroppy sunbather. AIBU to be annoyed at someone telling my dog to fuck off?

At least you've acknowledged YABU, OP!!
Please keep your dog under control.

NomNomNomNom · 23/06/2018 14:52

They sound slightly grumpy but I doubt the dog was offended. To be fair if you're not a dog person and every dog that strolls past comes up an sniffs you it could get pretty annoying, maybe yours was the tenth dog in ten minutes and he/she had had enough.

raidthefridge · 23/06/2018 14:52

Newsflash: a lot of people don't like dogs.

Keep them on a lead if they are not controlled.

I have always liked dogs but one bit me a year ago out of the blue and it has changed my feelings about them. Life long veggie and animal lover but now I don't trust dogs like I used to. Meh. I'd tell one to fuck off too now.

Sara107 · 23/06/2018 14:52

It would really annoy me if I was sunbathing and some random dog came and started sniffing me or licking my face or something. Tbh I think I might be tempted to tell the owner to f off, never mind the dog!! You need to be able to see what your dog is doing and be able to prevent it being a nuisance and if that means a lead then it should be on a lead. If you couldn't see the dog, how would you know if it was doing a poo never mind annoying people. Some people are great about grabbing hold of their dogs to pass other people and I always thank them. But so many dog owners think you should be charmed by getting licked or jumped on by their precious pet.

VanGoghsDog · 23/06/2018 14:52

I'm a bit confused as to why someone would be sunbathing under a tree, but anyway....

AmazingPostVoices · 23/06/2018 14:53

Think of the situation from the sunbather’s point of view.

They are lying down and an unknown, out of control dog comes and stands above them, possibly licking them or standing on them.

Imagine how vulnerable you would feel?

Even if you were a dog lover that would be unnerving. If you were afraid of dogs (and lots of people are) it would be terrifying.

You didn’t see the sunbather. Fair enough, but that is exactly why your dog should always be on a lead, so you can control them in the event of unexpected things.

You are lucky the person didn’t give you a dressing down - I would have.

Floralnomad · 23/06/2018 14:53

You don’t need to keep the dog on a lead you just need to have it close enough to you that it doesn’t disturb or annoy other people , basically your dog should not be out of your sight or control , which yours obviously was.

firehousedog · 23/06/2018 14:53

i was just shocked at the blue language i suppose.

for the record the dog did not piss on the sunbather Grin

Lucky you.

We walk in virtually empty farmers' fields, and one day years ago it wasn't sunbathers my dog found next to a hedge. He wasn't even out of sight of me or that far away either. We had happened upon a shagging young couple who had obviously naively believed they would be alone on a public footpath in the fields. My labrador had begun licking them before I could get his lead on and frogmarch him away.

DuchyDuke · 23/06/2018 14:55

Your dog should be on the lead. End of.

Warpdrive · 23/06/2018 14:57

FWIW I think anyone telling a anyone to fuck off (even a dog), particularly someone you don't know, is vile and rude. There's no need to use revolting language like that, especially in public, ever. To me, it has aggressive undertones and I would also be offended OP.
I wouldn't say anything though, just make sure I gave them a wide berth in future and make sure the dog didn't disturb them again.

eggsandwich · 23/06/2018 14:58

Bloody hate it when people don’t have their dogs on a lead, were not all dog lovers put them on a lead!

BananaHarvest · 23/06/2018 14:58

But him some noise cancelling headphones if you’re worried about him hearing profanities. Otherwise accept not everyone likes a dog sniffing them when sunbathing.

Topseyt · 23/06/2018 15:00

Oh, and my labrador has only ever pissed on me. Once. We were at an agility class and listening to the instructor (well, I was listening, Mr. Labrador wasn't, of course). It was a warm day and I was in shorts. I suddenly felt something trickling down my calf and ankle. There he was standing beside me looking as though butter wouldn't melt in his mouth.

SumerisIcumenin · 23/06/2018 15:00

So, offend a dog owner and they’ll give you a wide berth next time? Result! And of general public benefit too!

KurriKurri · 23/06/2018 15:00

Shocked at the blue language?
How old is your dog? I understand he maybe your PFD, but he will hear far worse language as he grows up - especially if he wanders around near canals.
Just tell him it's a rude word and he isn't to use it at home or in front of the vicar. If he's anything like my dog, he will struggle to get his lips to form the 'F' sound anyway.

SoddingUnicorns · 23/06/2018 15:02

So, offend a dog owner and they’ll give you a wide berth next time?

I’m now going to loudly quote Billy Connolly jokes whenever I see a dog walker! (Disclaimer I do actually own a dog, but she has such crap recall due to abuse before we got her that she’s never off lead)

SaltyPeanut · 23/06/2018 15:04

Buy him a nice juicy treat, sit him down, give him a cuddle, explain people are mean sometimes and that everything will be okay.

And seriously, be more careful about letting him off the lead to run ahead, you never know when he'll run into a truly vicious human. Unfortunately they exist.

IamMoana · 23/06/2018 15:05

Sat on the beach this morning & witnessed not one but two dogs too far ahead steam straight into the middle of a family picnic and steal their food (think was sandwiches). If my toddler did that I'd be flaming. Both dog owners limply apologetic. They shouldn't be too far ahead if they can't behave in my opinion.

Notso · 23/06/2018 15:08

Surely this is a wind up?!

MiddlingMum · 23/06/2018 15:10

While I don't agree with swearing in any context, you were totally in the wrong OP - as you have admitted.

Lots of people, including myself, really dislike dogs. I'm not scared of them, I just think they are smelly, dirty and disgusting. You have every right to own a dog and to take it out, but you do not have the right to let it bother other people. You cannot control a dog if it's not on a lead, even if you think it is well trained.

I hope poor doggie isn't permanently damaged by hearing some bad language though, it does sound rather a precious little pooch.

pigsDOfly · 23/06/2018 15:10

Grin at KurriKurri. I was also wondering if the OP was worried the dog might start repeating the 'rude' word at home.

AmazingPostVoices · 23/06/2018 15:10

OP they swore at your dog because they were shocked and frightened.

A little empathy might not go amiss.

Undercoverbanana · 23/06/2018 15:12

I am terrified of dogs. I can’t run in so many places, including the canals, because of uncontrolled dogs. The very least I’d have done was tell it to fuck off. You’d have got a fuck off also. Offended? Shocked? Well I was fucking terrified and have been known to pass out during panic attacks over uncontrolled dogs so, yes, I really would mean fuck off.

LankinMcElf · 23/06/2018 15:13

Imagine laying in the sun relaxing with your eyes closed when all of a sudden an unwelcome cold, damp nose...........😳
