...starting at 12 o clock from Pall Mall.

(Piccadilly, Green Park and Charing Cross station are the nearest tubes.)

Ah I have it - referendum 3 could be called...

‘The vote of the people’

I know I know, it’s a tad grand and doesn’t leave much wiggle room at the point of referendum 4 but I think it has legs.

Or folks could just accept that (the majority of those who can be bothered to vote) disagree with them and they should just vote off..?

As another poster commented, suspect London Waitrose and m&s stores were dead today, what with the ‘people’ on the streets...

surferjet · 23/06/2018 20:13

Referendum 10.
‘The people don’t give a fuck anymore’

jasjas1973 · 23/06/2018 20:14

If there were to be a 2nd referendum I think remain would win it yes, because a lot of people who voted leave the 1st time around wouldn’t bother again, they’d feel so disillusioned by it all, And that’s a terrible shame

Well, that would make up for a lot of younger voters who didnt vote first time 'round, you can;t have it both ways!
Of course, 16yo's (in 2016) can now vote and many elderly brexitiers have died, the demographics are against you i'm afraid.
The point of the 2nd referendum, is NOT to over turn the Will of the People or democracy (how can a referendum be undemocratic???) but to look at the deal being offered and vote accordingly.

Up until 2 years after A50 was instigated we CAN say 'sorry guys we got it wrong' and stay. The EU 27 won't be exactly overjoyed but it would save a lot of money. After that 2 years, we COULD still get back in IF all 27 agree we can. It might be a struggle to do that, it depends how much we piss them off in the meantime.
The EU are not bullies, they are simply applying the rules. If a member of your gym class or whatever 'messes about' would you want the other members to have a word and ask them to behave?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/06/2018 20:21

It won’t happen we are leaving let’s just hope it’s the softet exit it can be

The EU have other issues to deal with they are not going to play along with the UK’s negotiations for much longer if there is a people’s vote that will challenged it could go on for years and there isn’t enough support in parliament the Tories again this week pulled together as a party

And let’s remember the vast majority of mp’s voted for the referendum to go ahead and to accept the decision there was no let’s discuss what the referendum shall be about, shall we have a second vote on the conditions or if Leave win they just went ahead. This was unbelievably stupid considering UKIP had just become the third party in number of votes

Brexit
Trump
Merkel almost out the door.
Poland tell the EU to F themselves.
Hungary do too!
Then Italy!
Now in Sweden....Sweden Democrats are polling 25%+

The whole of Europe is turning nazi!

Auti · 23/06/2018 20:25

?

LARLARLAND · 23/06/2018 20:25

Voting for Brexit doesn’t make people Nazis Grin

Heyduggeesflipflop · 23/06/2018 20:25

The referendum was originally a political question in the sense of - do we want our national future shackled to the eu?

In the intervening 2 years the genius of the remainers has been to morph that into a question of economics - do you want to be richer or poorer?

By doing so they have sought to own the narrative on both what Brexit is and what it means.

It’s a bit like sitting gcse maths and answering a set question incorrectly. Then spending two years ‘working on’ the exam writer in a quest to convince him that it isn’t your answer that is wrong: it’s the question.

Are you sure???

Tanith · 23/06/2018 20:30

The 2016 referendum was the second referendum. The first was held in 1975. Over 60% turned out for it and the result was nearly 70% in favour of the EC.

The overwhelming result then didn't stop the Leavers demanding another referendum over the 40 years until the next one.

Meadowland · 23/06/2018 20:32

Haven't read the whole thread but just want to say a huge thank you to all those who went on the march today. For personal reasons I could not go but thank you to each and every one who did.

Heyduggeesflipflop · 23/06/2018 20:33

Tanith

Yes but it’s not the same is it?

The eu of 2018 is a very different thing from the ec of 1975

JacquesHammer · 23/06/2018 20:34

It’s a bit like sitting gcse maths and answering a set question incorrectly. Then spending two years ‘working on’ the exam writer in a quest to convince him that it isn’t your answer that is wrong: it’s the question

But of course you can retake GCSE maths...

I cannot imagine why anyone who can employ even the slightest of insightful thinking could object to having a vote once there is a tangible deal on the table.

borntobequiet · 23/06/2018 20:35

Marcus L Crassus wasn’t a particularly nice person:

But the march was great.

Scoopofchaff · 23/06/2018 20:35

Yes, echoing the sentiments of Meadowland, really grateful to everyone who made the effort to March.

54321go · 23/06/2018 20:40

{The whole of Europe is turning nazi!}
That is a very offensive and incorrect statement with the irony that Germany is one of the most vociferous countries trying to keep Europe united against forces that are bigger than the whole lot.
Everyone is shackled to other countries. The EU is better for the UK than most as it is closer physically and cultures are more similar.
Being part of the EU is all about finance and security. By exiting we are chucking that away. You may chose to decide I am wrong, that is your prerogative but you might try finding out for yourself if you would stop writing complete 'we won' drivel.

surferjet · 23/06/2018 20:40

Good lord.
Are remainers really comparing a vote in 1976 to the vote in 2016?
Was the EU exactly the same in 1975 as it is now?

kalapattar · 23/06/2018 20:55

We are leaving the EU.
Chances are we will still have to stick to EU regulations over 'the shape of our vegetables', the power of our hairdriers etc - as we will be doing a lot of trade with them - them being next door and all that. But we will have no say over those regulations.

Still, we don't need to worry about selling fruit and vegetables - because our crops won't have been picked because we don't have enough workers to pick them.

We will be getting a massive Brexit dividend - out of public spending of £830 billion, I think £8 billion goes to Europe. So that's 1% back - but that's probably not Net, might not include the rebate and then there's all the money that the EU gives to the UK regions. Still, it's better than nowt.

Unfortunately, the UK tax and other income will probably go down after Brexit - so public spending will be affected. But it's our money - even though most of it was our money in the first place.

Yes, Leave won. Well done. Slow hand clap.

A great British Brexit. Hmm

ttprw · 23/06/2018 21:03

Good Lord..
Are leavers really comparing global business, tech and communications in 1976 to 2016??...

Figmentofmyimagination · 23/06/2018 21:03

flipflop

Except for the very wealthy, brexit has always been a question of 'do you want to be richer or poorer'. There is no redrawing of the question. The only difference is that now, it is slowly dawning on people that maybe they weren't just bullshit scare stories. 'Sovereignty' is meaningless if you have no economic power.

ttprw · 23/06/2018 21:03

...is the world the same now as it was in 1976??
