to think the EU will break apart in the next few years...

With the rise in anti-immigrant sentiment and the popularity of right-wing and Eurosceptic Governments in Italy, Poland, Hungary and possibly Germany, it doesn't look like EU unity will last.

OP posts:
RoseanneBarred · 22/06/2018 18:17

Doesn't it? I think countries will look at us and grip onto the EU.

Elkcuhc56 · 22/06/2018 18:23

YANBU
The southern countries like Italy/Spain have anti EU sentiment spreading like wildfire.
If the SE/NE European countries are forced to take in more migrants (if a new quota is set up) I imagine they'll also be kicking off.

c3pu · 22/06/2018 18:26

Yabu...

A colleague who voted leave told me with great gusto that the EU would be collapsing like a line of dominoes now that the UK was leaving...

No more sign of it happening now than there was back then.

zsazsajuju · 22/06/2018 18:29

Yeah, doubt it though. ENthusiasm for the EU is greater than ever.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/06/2018 18:36

If that was ever a faint possibility, in two years time the EU countries are going to be looking at the UK and thinking 'fark no'

lilcolibri · 22/06/2018 18:38

I also think the EU will dissolve in the next decade.

But where will that leave us with Russia and China, and, god forbid, Russia's new puppet, the US?

TeasndToast · 22/06/2018 18:38

It depends on how we fair when we leave. If we cope better than anticipated then I don’t think YABU in thinking the other countries will follow suit.

The rest of Europe is watching for sure.

soapboxqueen · 22/06/2018 18:39

No. I think we are doing a very good job of being a cautionary tale for everyone else.

ForalltheSaints · 22/06/2018 18:40

Given how few net contributors there are and how many countries benefit, I cannot see it happen.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 22/06/2018 18:43

In your dreams may be. In reality, no. Medias in the UK are biased, they like to big up the anti-EU feelings.

Vitalogy · 22/06/2018 18:44

I agree. And look forward to it.

TheMonkeyMummy · 22/06/2018 18:47

Nah. I live in Europe and all around me people are actually uniting in support of the EU.

EngTech · 22/06/2018 18:47

We live in interesting times as the old saying goes 😳

There will come a point in time where the other EU countries will have to make up the shortfall that the U.K. used to contribute.

Germany / France will not let the EU fail, they have too much to loose.

GreyCloudsToday · 22/06/2018 18:52

YABVU, we are the suckers leaving the biggest trading bloc.

SoleBizzz · 22/06/2018 18:57

I thought I heard France was leaving the EU?

Elkcuhc56 · 22/06/2018 18:58

Macron said that France would 'probably vote leave' given the chance. Something like 61% of French people view the EU negatively

Caselgarcia · 22/06/2018 18:59

I think it will change into a two tier system, a core of Euro countries who want closer intergration and an outer group with looser ties not necessarily tied to the euro.

pointythings · 22/06/2018 19:00

Wishful thinking, OP...

Madmarchpear · 22/06/2018 19:02

"Look forward to it" 🙄and the global recession that would follow. Morons.

TweetTweetSong · 22/06/2018 19:07

Some will stick to the EU no matter what, we will not be the only country to leave.

Racecardriver · 22/06/2018 19:08

I think that it will struggle on until Germany leaves or it suffers complete economic collapse. Both things look for more probable than they did ten years ago but still unlikely. It most definitely won't break up in the next ten years imo.

Abra1de · 22/06/2018 19:10

I almost hope it does because we could re-form it in a better and more resilient version. THough I wouldn’t want to put other countries through the turmoil.

Racecardriver · 22/06/2018 19:10

@madmarchpear why would that cause a global recession? The EU is hardly a major player in the way that America or China are for ecample. Trading with the EU is so difficult that a collapse isire likely to be a trading boost for other countries.

Angelicinnocent · 22/06/2018 19:14

Since Germany and France seem to be planning on throwing Greece and Italy under the bus regarding the immigrants being sent back to protect Merkel, it would no longer surprise me if they did end up leaving too.
