to think the EU will break apart in the next few years...

With the rise in anti-immigrant sentiment and the popularity of right-wing and Eurosceptic Governments in Italy, Poland, Hungary and possibly Germany, it doesn't look like EU unity will last.

OP posts:
Bishybarnybee · 22/06/2018 19:20

Russia would be totally delighted by the break up of the EU.

Theworldisfullofgs · 22/06/2018 19:31

No I don't think it will collapse. No sign of it.
They are starting to have conversations about immigration hence the recent bill re equality of pay.
Eu Immigration has less impact on wages than outside of EU immigration.

And if it did collapse then it probably would cause a global recession. They don't just trade in isolation and rank well compared to China and the US, in fact on a par.

A few fascist loser states like britain, poland and hungary will be peering hungrily in the windows of the remaining 25 or more EU democracies in a few years, if that's what you mean OP.

Greece is wise to fascist coups like 'brexit' Angelicinnocent especially those purchased by the US, so I don't think they will break away soon.

downthestrada · 22/06/2018 19:51

I know this is anecdotal but I’ve been travelling around Europe for work and people still seem happy about being in the EU. They do think we’re mad for leaving though. I was getting a tiny bit fed up of talking about it!

TweetTweetSong · 22/06/2018 19:57

I was told today that the EU will charge £52.00 for a visa. I shrugged my shoulders, I haven't been able to afford to travel there for years, I can't see the situation changing.

I don't feel European. I am not a proud British person. I am just me, I simply exist in the country I was born into, I don't self-ID as any nationality. I don't understand all this love of being European (flag waving) and loving the EU, it's as confusing to me as having a gender identity.

Theworldisfullofgs · 22/06/2018 20:00

My newly acquired French cousin thinks we are bonkers. I agree.

bellinisurge · 22/06/2018 20:01

In answer to the op, No.

bellinisurge · 22/06/2018 20:01

But it won't happen.

TheCheeseStandsAlone · 22/06/2018 20:06

I think it will happen eventually, yes.

The EU is NOT about to start charging Brits for visas though, I can assure you of that 😂 It will go back to being the same as it is for the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, New
Zealand: no pre-visa required for a 90-day stay, just stamped in your passport on entry.

I think there’s probably some line on it somewhere as a basis for negotiation and the DM has latched onto it. They never let the truth get in the way of a good headline.

MongerTruffle · 22/06/2018 20:11

UK nationals will be charged €7 for a visa waiver to enter countries in the Schengen Area.

There is massive conservatism throughout Europe and enough people to remember what war and occupation on their own soil means. Although mainly a trading block the EU also binds the members making war with other parts of Europe pretty unlikely.
Most countries have a 'far right' element who are vocal and if unchecked would become dangerous so it needs containing. It is pretty easy to be a thug and smash things up. The massive war being waged by the Taliban and ISIS is not over and Europe is seeing the edges of this in the form of refugees and economic migrants.
Until the twin towers outrage the concept of suicide bombing was largely unthinkable to the west, certainly not often considered. It is of course not a surprise in some parts of the world.
The BBC website has a piece about war in the desert (Sahara), it is worth a read and consider what happens next. Complaining about tariffs and other aspects of EU membership pale into insignificance if the brutal 'war' of the terrorists get any grip in Europe.
What price can you put on not having your child blown up on the way to school?

WigglyBlossom · 22/06/2018 20:15

I agree with you OP. The EU is on the skids.

TweetTweetSong · 22/06/2018 20:17

This time next year, I plan to tell people to bore off, if they are still banging on about the EU.

safariboot · 22/06/2018 20:23

Well that's Farage's wet dream isn't it, the entire EU collapsing. The would-be exiteers in other countries had better get a move on though, because once the rest of Europe sees what a basketcase Brexit Britain becomes I don't think many other countries will be voting to leave.

woman11017 · 22/06/2018 20:24

This time next year british people will be lucky if they have food in their cupboards, and peace on their streets: pesky EU with its peace and food.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/06/2018 20:25

Looks more like the Uk is on the skids
Don't try to distract yourself from your own problems by bigging up everyone else's smaller ones.

The EU won't collapse just to make you feel better about voting Brexit

I live in Germany and have colleagues from other EU countries
They all think the Uk are idiots to leave
There is sympathy for the mess the Uk is in over Brexit, but no wish to leave the EU

Even the far right AfD here just wants Germany to stop refugees & migrants, not quit the EU
That's Middle East / North African Muslim immigrants btw; noone including the the AfD has a problem with FOM of other EU citizens.

Germany is tightening up its rules on refugees
The EU will change policy on migrants & refugees

In the meantime, the govt has no plan for Brexit
I know whose prospects I'm worried about

TweetTweetSong · 22/06/2018 20:27

There will be no chicken or fizzy pop next week, a taste of our new life.

time4chocolate · 22/06/2018 20:33

Germany is tightening up its rules on refugees
The EU will change policy on migrants & refugees

And they are doing this why?

woman11017 · 22/06/2018 20:33

And....extremist violent fascist men are marching again round london this w/e. If those boot boys are on the go now, what the dickens will they be like when tesco's is empty and the cash machines don't work.

england won't be very nice, but I imagine the Hague, Dijon and Frankfurt will be as they are now.

Brexit has been quite a good advert for the EU.

TheCheeseStandsAlone · 22/06/2018 20:37

Thanks for the link @mongertruffle Smile

I wasn’t aware that they were about to start charging people in the countries I mentioned above (I come from one of them but have a different visa so don’t need the Schengen visa exemption thingy).

It’s not a specific UK thing though, it’s just that if the UK is no longer in the EU then the other set of laws will apply, IYSWIM. So they’re not bringing in anything against the UK specifically, but UK residents will be moving to a different already extant visa class.

TweetTweetSong · 22/06/2018 20:37

We are in the EU now and nobody gives a flying Fuck about hard left groups threatening all kinds of violence including bombs and bomb making equipment being found, in the UK, in 2018.

thelatestone · 22/06/2018 20:38

Nah, I think the colossal mess we are in will make the other EU states think that can't be arsed going through all that.

siwel123 · 22/06/2018 20:38

Nope the rest of the EU will see how bad brexit has affected us and how shit our economy has become and think he'll no

woman11017 · 22/06/2018 20:40

And they are doing this why
Saving a million people from certain death(caused by wars enflamed by us) was obviously an act of immense courage and compassion, but : EU is a democratic organisation; trying to be responsive to constituents, considering the best way forward, being flexible; believing in accountable process.

Trying to keep the bread and roses.

user1490607838 · 22/06/2018 20:41

Yes, and it can't happen soon enough. We have had the sense to leave, and it won't be long before others realise the EU is a pointless waste of time that benefits no-one except the rich and privileged.
