So my dad lives in a granny annex attached to my house. A few days ago he babysat my son (age 6) on a school night so hubby and I could go out. We got back late but not ridiculous around 9.30. At 9.30 I was thinking have a cup of tea then head to bed but was met with ‘*** had an accident in his school trousers I’ve left them by the washing machine with the others’

As it happens I had put him in the clean trousers that morning meaning this left him without any trousers.

I said to my dad that it would have been helpful if he had just put them in the wash since he now had no trousers for school the next day. Dad’s now annoyed I said that. I’m not particularly happy I had to stay up later than expected after a long busy day. (1:25 wash cycle)

Who is right?

As a side note the granny annex and main house share a laundry room and he is perfectly capable of using the machine. I often can’t do my laundry because his is in there.

Your dad is right. He agreed to babysit, not do your washing. How was he meant to know you had no spares? And you could surely have picked a shorter wash cycle if you were eager to go to bed.

You could have hand washed and rinsed them out. It didn't need a 1.25hr wash cycle for a bit of wee.

Not your dad’s responsibility

I don’t think it’s fair to expect your Dad to know the state of play regarding your sons spare school trousers. He gave you presumably free childcare which was really good of him and you could have used a quick wash cycle or washed them through in the sink. I think you are in the wrong here.

Your dad is right. It would have been nice and thoughtful if he did that but it us unreasonable to expect him to do that let alone tell him off for not doing it.

Your Dad is right, It was only 9.30. Does your machine not have a quick wash setting? Even the other setting meant it was finished before 11pm so plenty of time to dry overnight.

Even if it doesn't how was he supposed to know that there were no other pairs of clean trousers?

Don't you have a quick wash cycle? I wash cat vomit off blankets no problem on that - a bit of wee no problem!

If that happened here I wouldn't expect one of my parents to do the washing although my mum probably would. I'd just bung it on a 14 minute freshen up wash and hang overnight to dry.

Who'd do an hour and twenty five minute wash for a pair of trousers

Your dad didn’t know you didn’t have spare trousers. It’s not his responsibility to sort your laundry. I’d never put just one item on a wash cycle, I’d wait until their was a full load.
