Who’s right

So my dad lives in a granny annex attached to my house. A few days ago he babysat my son (age 6) on a school night so hubby and I could go out. We got back late but not ridiculous around 9.30. At 9.30 I was thinking have a cup of tea then head to bed but was met with ‘*** had an accident in his school trousers I’ve left them by the washing machine with the others’

As it happens I had put him in the clean trousers that morning meaning this left him without any trousers.

I said to my dad that it would have been helpful if he had just put them in the wash since he now had no trousers for school the next day. Dad’s now annoyed I said that. I’m not particularly happy I had to stay up later than expected after a long busy day. (1:25 wash cycle)

Who is right?

As a side note the granny annex and main house share a laundry room and he is perfectly capable of using the machine. I often can’t do my laundry because his is in there.

Sorry but dad's right.

VanGoghsDog · 21/06/2018 13:05

@ikeepaforkinmypurse - she may well be making a fuss about nothing but the fact is she had two pairs of 'dirty' trousers and no spares. Yes she does need more but I was just light heartedly saying 'I would probably' - I have never done this as a) I don't have any kids and b) I've never owned Febreeze.

There's really no need to have a conniption over it.

WingsOnMyBoots · 21/06/2018 13:07

Spare trousers. Not Dad's fault.

ahem who is over-reacting here VanGoghsDog? Grin

ScoobieDoop · 21/06/2018 13:08

The way you were talking, I imagined the trousers were full of pooh - which would have been a different matter.

Wet trousers in our house either get put into a small plastic bag next to the washing machine or thrown in the bath, to go in with the next cycle later that day or following morning. Don't worry, I then clean my bath! I would not instantly put them by themselves into the washer.

You need to plan ahead so that you have reserves ready for important items of clothing - school trousers or last pair.

I suspect your father is annoyed with you because you did not speak to him very nicely about it. Not because you dared to mentioned he could have washed an item of clothing. Sometimes it's all in the delivery....

Cheerbear23 · 21/06/2018 13:12

As everyone else has said- also buy more trousers.

BrutusMcDogface · 21/06/2018 13:21

Well it's not often that the responses are unanimous! Grin

Yab verrrrrrry unreasonable.

nervousnails · 21/06/2018 13:29

Wow unanimous responses in AIBU. Grin

ProudThrilledHappy · 21/06/2018 13:31

If you’d paid a babysitter would you expect them to wash messy trousers?

FlyingDandelionSeed · 21/06/2018 13:42

I’d never put just one item on a wash cycle, I’d wait until their was a full load.

Yes me too.

Expecting someone watching your kid to know your laundry preferences etc is unreasonable.

If he was regularly watching your kid you could very nicely have asked 'if this happens again it would be really helpful if you put it on as I won't have time when I get back". But even then I wouldn't expect someone else to do my laundry...

PizzaPower · 21/06/2018 13:49

Perhaps you think he should also have put up those shelves you needed doing, vacuumed the living room, painted the dining room and baked a cake? Cake

NoSquirrels · 21/06/2018 13:53

He'd not have known you had no other clean trousers for tomorrow, so it was hardly unreasonable of him to assume you'd stick them in with the next wash.

Count yourself lucky he remembered to mention it to you! You could easily have woken up the next day none the wiser until practically school-run time.

If I were your dad I wouldn't be annoyed by you mentioning it "might have been helpful", but frankly it all depends on the tone, doesn't it, and you sound a bit pissy about it so perhaps he quite rightfully has the hump!

Ohyesiam · 21/06/2018 13:55

Maybe he couldn’t see any
Other dark washing?

Bluntness100 · 21/06/2018 14:08

Yeah, I'm another team dad. He's not the unpaid domestic help, he wouldn't have known you didn't have clean trousers, and quite frankly it's your kid your responsibility.

SilverySurfer · 21/06/2018 14:11

What they all said.

Loyaultemelie · 21/06/2018 14:11

Not your Dad (or any babysitter's) responsibility. I wouldn't dare leave mine in their uniform any day it invites disaster of some description.

GlassSuppers · 21/06/2018 14:21

I don't think OP is coming back...

Bluntness100 · 21/06/2018 14:31

I doubt she's coming back either.

Seldom do we get a unanimous thread, I guess she likes that less than we do 🤣

Pandora79 · 21/06/2018 14:39

Yabu. Of course your dad is right.

I would be pissed off if I was him as well.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 21/06/2018 14:42

It wouldn't have made any difference here, as we have no dryer. Either buy more pairs, or do a wash more often.

smallchanceofrain · 21/06/2018 14:49

Team Dad
To avoid such problems in the future:

  1. More trousers - one pair on, one in the wash, one spare.
  2. Quick wash or hand wash.
  3. Change out of school uniform on arrival home from school.
DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 21/06/2018 14:52

Wow...your dad might be ‘right’ but surely most family members would just sling them in the wash with anything else handy? I know my mum or dad would.

Get a machine with a short wash though, it’s a life saver.
