Who’s right

So my dad lives in a granny annex attached to my house. A few days ago he babysat my son (age 6) on a school night so hubby and I could go out. We got back late but not ridiculous around 9.30. At 9.30 I was thinking have a cup of tea then head to bed but was met with ‘*** had an accident in his school trousers I’ve left them by the washing machine with the others’

As it happens I had put him in the clean trousers that morning meaning this left him without any trousers.

I said to my dad that it would have been helpful if he had just put them in the wash since he now had no trousers for school the next day. Dad’s now annoyed I said that. I’m not particularly happy I had to stay up later than expected after a long busy day. (1:25 wash cycle)

Who is right?

As a side note the granny annex and main house share a laundry room and he is perfectly capable of using the machine. I often can’t do my laundry because his is in there.

Don't know why you would expect your dad to do it?

Bumble1830 · 21/06/2018 12:42

Maybe he didn't want to put the machine on for 1 pair of trousers? maybe he thought you had others? I'm with other pp, you could've hand washed them or put them on a quick wash, or, put a pair on DS that hadn't been washed but were still clean?

Friendsupport · 21/06/2018 12:46

Your dad.

You are being so dramatic about being up so late

user1494670108 · 21/06/2018 12:46

Think you've probably got the message but your dad is definitely right here.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 21/06/2018 12:50

You are cutting it very fine if your 6 year old only had 2 pairs of trousers!

It makes life so much easier if they have enough clothes for an entire week, including enough uniforms. Even the cleanest child can fall down and ripped the knees.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 21/06/2018 12:50

and I of course agree with all of the above

DarlingNikita · 21/06/2018 12:51

The only short wash my machine has is a 30-degree one and I wouldn't be happy to put wet/soiled clothes (we don't know it wasn't a soiling situation) in that.

But it'd be a good idea to have a better stock of clean school clothes.

wibblywobblywoo · 21/06/2018 12:53

Yup, you owe your dad an apology. He's your dad and he was doing you a favour, he's not your au-pair.

Grump1 · 21/06/2018 12:53

Your dad.
Thank him for telling you. He might have justifiably assumed there was a clean pair for the next day anyway.
Buy more trousers.
Why were you not making him a shared cup of tea with you for babysitting?
Go and apologise and make him a nice meal with all of you tonight if you want him to babysit again. 🍷🍴

lynmilne65 · 21/06/2018 12:54

Well thats you told !!!

TheMagnoliaTree · 21/06/2018 12:54

Your Dad is right.

How many pairs of trousers does your son have?

What would have happened if on any given morning your child wearing the only clean pair of trousers he has tripped and ripped the knee open? Or spilt something down them? Fell over going out the door and muddied them so much a spot clean wouldn't help?

He needs more trousers or you need to do laundry more often.

a2011x · 21/06/2018 12:55

Your dad is right

takingsmallsteps · 21/06/2018 12:56

My mum or both in laws would probably have already washed them but I wouldn't expect it. My dad would be clueless given he's never done any laundry. I'd have handwashed or done a quick wash. No need for any drama.

PizzaPower · 21/06/2018 12:56

Go Team Dad
& buy a washer with a 30 minute wash!

GlassSuppers · 21/06/2018 12:56

If I'd have had a go at my dad for that he wouldn't babysit for me again.

YABU I'm afraid.

15star · 21/06/2018 12:57

Your dad is right. Why did you choose such a long cycle? I would of just done the 15min quick wash and hung up to dry. It's a good idea to get a few extra pairs of trousers.

SoyDora · 21/06/2018 12:57

^ this

Robin233 · 21/06/2018 12:57

Rinse cycle then tumble
But I didn't always have a tumble dryer when kids were little. This phase doesn't last long.

Theworldcouldbemymollusc · 21/06/2018 12:58

Yuck if I had babysat for free and got moaned at for not washing trousers I wouldn’t be in a rush to babysit again. Seems a bit ungrateful to me. Maybe you are annoyed with him for other things? It can be tough sharing space with others. I would find a granny annexe tough!

OuchLegoHurts · 21/06/2018 12:58

Your dad is right

implantsandaDyson · 21/06/2018 13:00

Why did you have to stay up to wait on the washing? If you were that knackered couldn't your husband have stayed up?
Until I got a new washing machine a few months ago, my previous one didn't have a quick wash. The shortest wash was 90 mins.

VanGoghsDog · 21/06/2018 13:00

@wibblywobblywoo

She didn't need to put the soiled ones in a quick wash, she could have put the other pair which presumably only have normal wear on the quick wash. It didn't matter which were washed as long as one was. I'd probably have shaken the other pair straight and sprayed them with Febreeze and got in bed at 9.35pm!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 21/06/2018 13:01

I'd probably have shaken the other pair straight and sprayed them with Febreeze

please don't Febreeze your kids clothes , just buy them enough outfits

RedSkyAtNight · 21/06/2018 13:02

Seconding/thirding/whatevering the comments from others about just rinsing them out/quick wash cycle/whatever.

And to add to this ... at 6 he could have just worn his PE trousers or something similar tomorrow.

(my MIL does wash my DC's clothes when they stay. She washes them in fabric conditioner that DS is allergic too, and once turned DD's favourite T-shirt blue. I would be grateful your dad hadn't tried to wash them in your situation!)

VanGoghsDog · 21/06/2018 13:02

Sorry, I was replying to @DarlingNikita in fact.
