AIBU to ask if anyone here got pregnant using the withdrawal method (especially if your DH/DP successfully withdrew every time)

To clarify this is not because I am considering this a valid method of contraception, but because a colleague stated it was impossible to fall pregnant if you “correctly executed it”

And I am sure you can? So please people enlighten me! because I’m petty and have to know I’m right

Your colleague is an idiot.

monkeysox · 20/06/2018 18:24

😂 they're bonkers

TwitterQueen1 · 20/06/2018 18:24

I cannot speak from experience but surely there is no such thing as 'successfully withdrew'? My understanding is that semen is released before orgasm / ejaculation so this method of contraception can NEVER be guaranteed.

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 20/06/2018 18:24

I've seen threads on this topic here before.

They always say your colleague is an idiot.

She’s an absolute delight in every way, she’s masters educated and has an undergrad degree in bloody human biology! 🤦‍♀️

Intelligence and common sense are two entirely different things OP. I know lots of very bright people who are basically daft as a brush.

Amberheartkitty · 20/06/2018 18:31

I got caught during withdrawal method. Maybe husband wasn’t very good at it 🤷‍♀️

Tronkmanton · 20/06/2018 18:32

I got caught too!

50shadesofgreyismylaundry · 20/06/2018 18:32

I've been doing it that way for 20 years. Only 3 pregnancies which were very difficult to achieve. I don't think we're very fertile.

cheeseandonionalltheway · 20/06/2018 18:33

Yes I have. We'd done it before and stupidly it came as a total surprise.

Screaminginsideme · 20/06/2018 18:34

I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t

Empoweredwomenempowerwomem · 20/06/2018 18:35

@amber and @tronk can I ask? Did you execute the method correctly though? 😩😂

As a contraception nurse and former abortion counsellor, so many women get pregnant in spite of their partners having excellent control. Semen is released on erection, not just on ejaculation so pregnancy can occur with foreplay if penetration is included. Also, some couples are just more fertile together so withdrawal may have been effective in a previous partner, just don't bank on it being always efficient contraception.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/06/2018 18:41

‘Got caught’ Hmm

I’ve been a proper grown up so I’m allowing myself to say this: are there people not successfully withdrawing? Do they have to phone an ambulance to sort it out? Surely it’s nt the withdrawing that’s the problem but the timing.

LemonysSnicket · 20/06/2018 19:03

Pre-cum.

outofmydepth45 · 20/06/2018 19:30

precum babies !

HildaZelda · 20/06/2018 19:31

My bridesmaid did. Twice. You'd think once would have served as a warning but apparently not .....

FlyingElbows · 20/06/2018 19:33

Nobody "catches" pregnancy. Hmm

I have a friend who earnestly advocates "natural" fp methods like this. She has six children!!

clippityclock · 20/06/2018 19:35

Erm well I have an 8 year old DS........so yes and I only used this method about 3 times with the ex the rest he was condomed up!

fairislecable · 20/06/2018 19:41

Many years ago whilst on the waiting list for an NHS vasectomy I conceived twins!!

Previous conception was coil failure (copper 7)!

This is a small study suggesting that some men have sperm in pre-cum and some don't. In the study some men had sperm present in all their samples and the others had no sperm in all their samples.
So either way it's a lottery really!

APermanentlyExhaustedPigeon · 20/06/2018 19:54

I have posted before on another thread, I conceived during unprotected sex without my husband actually ejaculating. It might be a million to one chance, but it can definitely happen!

We practised withdrawal for about two years. Didn't get pregnant. Got pregnant about six months after trying. BUT. We were at a point where we knew we wanted children at some point and whilst they were not planned at that point we both felt it wouldn't be a disaster if they came earlier. I think we were both hoping the universe would make the decision for us. We had talked about that as a very real risk of the withdrawal method because on any view if you really don't want to have kids withdrawal is not advisable. I didn't get pregnant until we started trying in earnest.
