To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

This thread also implies that white people don’t experience racism which is complete bollocks.

IcedPurple · 20/06/2018 20:34

To say all drug dealers/muggers/car jackers/gang members are black, now that would be racist, yes, but Alan made a little joke which was actually quite sweet and a compliment in a way.

It's a 'compliment' to compare talented professional footballers representing their country to beach peddlers? Just because they have the same colour skin?

Please tell me you're not actually being serious.

brought the team a little extra exposure to boot.

"The team" won a football match yesterday. In the World Cup. With millions of people cheering them on.

I doubt they need the 'exposure' from the twitter feed of a sad old bore.

phlewf · 20/06/2018 20:35

Saido Mane plays for Liverpool, he’s not exactly desperate for exposure.

Gilead · 20/06/2018 20:36

he’s not exactly desperate for exposure.
Rebecca however, obviously is...

Jonbb · 20/06/2018 20:38

Imo it was appallingly racist and I'm pleased he deleted it and apologised.

llangennith · 20/06/2018 20:39

He’s likening them to the ‘lookie lookie’ men that are on all Spanish beaches.

Bibesia · 20/06/2018 20:41

Jesus....this thread is STILL going?

Why is it strange that it was still going five hours after it started, Thewheelshavefallen? People come to threads afresh after finishing work, and people who access MN live in different timezones.

The reality, of course, is that your agenda is to downplay the seriousness of Sugar's racism, as demonstrated by your own previous posts. I think you may just have to cope with the fact that people aren't buying it.

Bibesia · 20/06/2018 20:44

RebeccaBunch, could you explain what's so funny about the tweet?

People have explained upthread why this is racist. Could you tell us why they're wrong?

OhBabyNoName · 20/06/2018 20:51

As a black woman, I've been really saddened to read some of the comments on this thread. I'm saddened that Alan Sugar is likely to get away with this horrid comment. I'm saddened that people can't see how hurtful a comment like this is.

The World Cup is supposed to unify. How sad that this was the only thing that came to mind. As a woman with Senegalese family, I hope that what most of the world saw was a win that meant a great deal to those in Senegal, whose days are brightened by victories such as this.

Quimby · 20/06/2018 20:52

No problem with other people being held to account for what they say on Twitter or repeating things he finds highly offensive but somehow thinks he can criticise people retweeting him if they found it so offensive

The fucking hypocrite

To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

And what criteria is he using to 'liken' these professional footballers to beach salesmen? Why didn't he 'liken' the Swedish team to them?

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 21:00

but Alan made a little joke which was actually quite sweet and a compliment in a way. And brought the team a little extra exposure to boot.

No.... Sorry..... Youve lost me. How is it 'sweet and a compliment'?

StealthPolarBear · 20/06/2018 21:09

I think I'm living on another planet. A compliment??
I'm still trying to work out the funniness. Some racist jokes I can see the humour. This is just a huge fucking insult by the interchangeable old white man.

MariaMadita · 20/06/2018 21:10

And what criteria is he using to 'liken' these professional footballers to beach salesmen? Why didn't he 'liken' the Swedish team to them?

The colour of their skin, obviously. (Well, imo)

I'm not sure whether this is actually racist or just a rude joke based on stereotypes, tbh.

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 20/06/2018 21:12

Look Moon, tbh, I think he was having a bit of fun with no malice or offence intended.

Sadly, in this day and age, I think that a famous white person can’t dare to make a joke about another person if that person is a poc. You know this is true. Look at Roseanne (sorry to derail thread).

I’m sure if someone made a joke about Alan, he wouldn’t give a toss.

StealthPolarBear · 20/06/2018 21:13

Oh bollocks.

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 21:14

think that a famous white person can’t dare to make a joke about another person if that person is a poc

Except this is NOT about an individual but is about a group.

You do understand the difference?

surferjet · 20/06/2018 21:15

There’s an awful lot of ageist comments on this thread.
( oh the irony)

Gilead · 20/06/2018 21:15

Rebecca There was nothing funny about it. Your sentence about it being quite sweet was one of the most disgusting things I've read in a while. Oh, and the Roseanne thing - racist.

downthestrada · 20/06/2018 21:16

Racist. Whether people like it or not, it's a racist joke. You might find it funny, might not be bothered by it, but it's still racist.

With the joke he saying this. He's inviting you to laugh at this:

  • All black men look the same to him
  • Regardless of their achievements, they will always just be people who serve him
  • When he looks at black people, he can't see past their skin colour and the "box" he has placed them in.

It's racist. Fine if you think it's funny, but I'm assuming that you're laughing at all of the above. Let me know if there's some other part to the joke I am missing.

Especially the sweet compliment that rebecca mentioned.

AndThenWhat · 20/06/2018 21:16

RebeccaBunch, do you find what Roseanne said acceptable? Hmm

Moonkissedlegs · 20/06/2018 21:16

I think he was having a bit of fun with no malice or offence intended.

So what was 'the joke' then? Explain it to me.

downthestrada · 20/06/2018 21:17

Sadly, in this day and age, I think that a famous white person can’t dare to make a joke about another person if that person is a poc.

He's not making a joke about one person. He's grouping black people and saying they're all the same.

kalapattar · 20/06/2018 21:18

Sadly, in this day and age, I think that a famous white person can’t dare to make a joke about another person if that person is a poc

We live in a day and age where a racist, sexist, homophobe can become President of the USA.
