To think Lord Sugar should be sacked from the BBC for his tweet?

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 14:10

Earlier today Lord Sugar tweeted a photo of the Senegal football team with a caption along the lines of "I recognise these from the beaches in Marbella selling sunglasses!"

He doctored the image to add pictures of sunglasses. People challenged him online and he insisted it was funny and refused to apologise however since then he has apologised - he's obviously been forced to.

I won't add the image here, it's now been taken down but you can see it if you google it. AIBU to think this is disgusting, not funny, and he should be fired from the BBC?

"I’m someone who usually gets annoyed when people call things racist or sexist, "

This is such an odd thing to say!

McTufty · 20/06/2018 18:25

Really surprised to see so many posters on this thread saying it isn’t racist. It’s perpetuating that racist line that black people all look the same, which is dehumanising.

BlondeSea · 20/06/2018 18:35

@Gatecrasher61

Do you understand what racism is? Do you think because you wear glasses and in your opinion look a bit like a "geek" that's comparable to the kind of reactions a black person gets?

Are you totally dense?

McTufty yes there’s no other way to read it other than to see it as implying black people all look alike. And it’s also got an extra nasty layer to it. He appears to want to remind these extremely successful men that their true place is servicing white holidaymakers. Put them in their place, basically.

SlothSlothSloth · 20/06/2018 18:37

Yes BlondeSea what I’m getting from this post is that the education system has failed an awful lot of people...

IDontBowlOnShabbos · 20/06/2018 18:47

I'm really not surprised. I think the majority of people in this country are probably a bit racist (a bit as in finding 'jokes' like these funny, not thinking all black people are sub-human like the old days).
I remember in the 90s seeing racist comedians on TV, it takes a while for a cultural shift to happen unfortunately.

derxa · 20/06/2018 18:48

What was he thinking?
Anyway the Sengalese team are all beautiful and talented young men and he's a shrivelled up old goat. They probably couldn't give a shit even if they saw the tweet.

derxa · 20/06/2018 18:49

Yes the tweet was racist and totally unfunny.

SweetSummerchild · 20/06/2018 18:50

This is the man behind the Amstrad PCW. HIs judgement has always been lacking.

Tee hee!

ratchethandler · 20/06/2018 19:03

You're not serious ---- "Carlos kick-a-ball" ya say? Faints...

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2018 19:05

BertrandRussell

Phrased it poorly! I mean I usually think it’s overused and I get irritated at the word being bandied around incorrectly. But in this case it’s completely justified!

LemonysSnicket · 20/06/2018 19:08

Racist. 100%

Gilead · 20/06/2018 19:14

Ah come on. It's a storm in a tea cup.
For whom. All the nice white folks or the people that live this crap, day in, day out?

Thewheelshavefallenoffthebus · 20/06/2018 19:36

Jesus....this thread is STILL going?

Wow.

Thewheelshavefallenoffthebus · 20/06/2018 19:36

kalapattar

Exactly!

ReadingRiot · 20/06/2018 19:41

I'm sometimes prone to a "PC gone mad" POV. I am completely against discrimination but I do think what we're not "allowed" to say sometimes goes too far. However, this is simply outrageous. He's not only saying that all black men look the same but they all sell goods illegally on beaches. How is that funny?

Yes he absolutely should be sacked.

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2018 19:43

ReadingRiot

What you’ve said is exactly what I wanted to say!

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 20/06/2018 20:10

I think it’s funny, tbh, and don’t really care if anyone has an issue with the tweet.

Alan has cracked a joke, that’s all. Funnily enough, my two students I spoke with today- who are both black- also found it funny.

I think that those who make an issue of it are the racist ones, in a way.

Gilead · 20/06/2018 20:15

That's a tired old trope. It wasn't funny. It was racist. You can angle it anyway you want in an attempt not to look like a racist, but if it looks like a duck...

ut Alan made a little joke which was actually quite sweet and a compliment in a way

Why was it funny?

Gilead · 20/06/2018 20:26

no, I still don’t think it’s racist. To say all drug dealers/muggers/car jackers/gang members are black, now that would be racist, yes, but Alan made a little joke which was actually quite sweet and a compliment in a way. And brought the team a little extra exposure to boot.
In what way was it funny?
Oh, and it doesn't matter what you think. Were it not considered to be racist, it would not have been taken down. Ergo, racist.

Ruffian · 20/06/2018 20:26

Unfunny jokes are funny
Insults are compliments
People who hate racism are racist

What a topsy-turvey bullshit world you inhabit RebeccaBunchLawyer
