"took children from their parents and placed them with 'acceptable' families? "

happened all over south & central America, too, especially in Argentina, during military dictatorships. Children of the disappeared or babies born to imprisoned women were handed to regime-approved infertile couples. (shudder)

AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2018 17:51

lljkk I knew about the Desaparecidos in Argentina, but mostly through a coworker who was living in Argentina in the late 70's, many of her friends were Madres de Plaza de Mayo . But I didn't realize that they took the children of the Desaparecidos and gave them away! I was very young when we worked together (early 20s) and I just could not comprehend how the Desaparecidos could even happen. And so positive that it could never happen here! And yet, here we are!

It's just horrible and inhuman to use little children to terrify their parents into not seeking asylum. And even more terrible to take those children away and (potentially) not return them!

kalapattar · 24/06/2018 18:01

It's depressing to think that the stuff Trump does can be linked to the reprehensible acts of dictators of the past.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/06/2018 18:33

This looks interesting. Tonight 9pm BBC2

Reporting Trump's First Year: The Fourth Estate

Documentary following the staff of the New York Times and exploring the critical issues facing journalism in the wake of Donald Trump's presidency. The first episode examines the first three months of Trump's time in office, as the possibility of Russian interference in the election emerges and the media is condemned as an enemy of the people by the new president.

PerkingFaintly · 24/06/2018 18:42

Thanks Bore, I'll set that up to record.

(Good grief, how old am I? I had to correct that from "tape"...)

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/06/2018 18:54

Hah Perking! I can remember the days when if we wanted to watch something we had to stay in and watch it in real time Grin

PerkingFaintly · 24/06/2018 19:15

Blush I'm trying to blot out the fact I still find it exciting and modern to record at all.

And as for watching on Catch Up! That's cheating!Shock

I'm increasingly scared that the Repu'ns are not gonna get the bloody nose they deserve in November. The resistance is weakening. :(

I expect he was really quite helpful.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2018 20:05

He’s raving again. So full of spit it comes out both ends!

AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2018 20:05

That should be SHIT!!

BolleauxtoBankers · 24/06/2018 20:27

That made me think, Across - "Spitting Image" would have done him soooo well Grin

BolleauxtoBankers · 24/06/2018 20:34

lljkk You write: "I'm increasingly scared that the Repu'ns are not gonna get the bloody nose they deserve in November. The resistance is weakening."
You're not the first person I've seen saying this, what do you think is happening to the "Blue Wave", then? And what about the various "flips" there have been from red to blue in different elections throughout the country this year? I don't understand why there is this fear that the resistance is weakening, I think it is like Brexit, more and more people are becoming less and less accepting of the future as dictated by Trump or May and the resistance is growing. And I really hope I'm right!!!!

lljkk · 24/06/2018 20:52

I hope you're right, too. Bolleaux.
I think we're becoming desensitised to the Trump administration's corruption, incompetence & lack of compassion. Trump & his people repeatedly does things that would have been clearcut

... enormous ethical violations
... perceived as direct assaults on the constitution
... lambasted for the sheer audacity of the evident corruption
... pursued by the Republican party as obvious violations of federal law if democratic president had done them; special counsel should have been appointed & reappointed repeatedly
... and more

Almost Nothing happens. Mostly, they get away with all this with impunity. CNN & MSNBC are still screaming "THIS IS NOT NORMAL" but I'm not sure anyone is listening, any more.

Without very strong feelings, the swing voters won't swing to get the Reds out.

BolleauxtoBankers · 24/06/2018 21:06

I was under the impression that more people are screaming "this is not normal"? Or maybe it's just I'm living in an echo-chamber? But in the past couple of days, for example, haven't some well-respected, die-hard Republicans come out and said they will be voting Democrat in November as they cannot in all conscience support Trump and a party which lets him get away with all the evil things he is doing? The thing is, there seems to be no coherent leadership of the Democrats, but are they really just sitting back and letting it happen?
Are you in the States lljkk? Because if so, you are obviously more likely to have an understanding of what is going on "on the ground" than I am Sad

lljkk · 24/06/2018 21:18

Nope, I live in Britain. Thoroughly addicted to the soap opera that is modern US politics. Trump has new supporters sprouting up daily, as fast as he seems to lose them. It's become 'normal' to embrace his tactics & perspective.

I disliked Dubya. But to his credit, he tried hard to be a unifying president, actively reached out to hispanics, for instance. What a terrible low we are at, yet I think we'll go lower still.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2018 22:48

Not sure if this has been posted, but he's reached a new low.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2018 22:50

I'm in the US and I do think it getting hard to continuously scream and shout. But that doesn't mean we're not resisting, nor that we're getting apathetic. I think many of us feel 'wait for November'.

We may be getting used to the daily shit show, but that doesn't mean we're becoming desensitized to it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2018 22:52

I'm obsessing over my placard for the 13th. I've taken the day off. I hope that it being a working day won't curtail the numbers too much.

lionheart · 24/06/2018 22:53

I think people will remember.
