Arrived at holiday cottage and no towels!

So we have arrived at a holiday cottage, we have stayed at many in the past and there are no towels. Although bizarre I know this happens ocassionally so went back to check the listing and there's no mention of this.

We are miles from anything so suggestions on a post card for showering tomorrow morning - the curtains?! Just kidding of course.

What's the most random thing you've found missing? Before this it was hand soap which I found ridiculous given the price.

I often do take a towel for dh, the majority of places only have bath towels. I just manage for the week but at 6ft 2 he finds them pretty useless so I take a bath sheet for him.

Pollaidh · 16/06/2018 23:42

Got really annoyed at an AirBnB place in the New Forest last year. Said essentials inc. towels etc were provided on the listing. Got there and there were: No towels, no soap, and some other essentials I now forget. We ended up having to buy various items when we could easily have brought some from home.

What was really annoying was that (1) the owner was really fussy about what went down the septic tank so we spent hours searching all the shops in the (rural) area for the right soaps etc. (2) owner very begrugingly brought us some towels - the same ones being used in their animal sanctuary.

Pollaidh · 16/06/2018 23:43

Oh and there were no bathroom bins, which meant that previous guests had e.g. wrapped up sanitary towels in loo roll and stuffed them into the drawer in the bathroom, and they hadn't been cleaned out. Yuk.

Atthebottomofthesea · 16/06/2018 23:46

Yes the lack of bathroom bins annoy me. It seems to be quite common. I end up using a nappy sack on the floor. (I usually remember to shove some in, nappies are long gone but still have the sacks)

I hope you replied ‘As it was not made clear when we booked, I assume this issue will be rectified first thing tomorrow morning. We booked a LUXURY cottage, not a budget cottage and fully expect towels, toilet paper & dishwashing tablets to be provided...otherwise it’s really not ‘luxury’ standard’

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/06/2018 00:42

I always check after the flannel-as-towel incident.

Except I got caught out recently — they did indeed provide a towel, but it was a roller towel! I came incredibly close to unpicking it.

AlliKaneErikson · 17/06/2018 01:12

We’ve stayed in dozens of self catering places in cornwall and I don’t hi knany have had towels provided. However, they’ve always made that clear and in the brochures/websites it does clearly state the ones where towels are provided. So odd that it’s so inconsistent!

WipsGlitter · 17/06/2018 07:57

We went to an Airbnb in France (English owner). Arrived late, paid and extra 50euro for that. Nothing in the fridge not even a bottle of water. There was a bath towel and a hand towel each. No pool towels. On our last night we went into Antibes and you could get pool towels for about 10euro. Hmm

Wingbing · 17/06/2018 08:16

We’ve stayed in many cottages over the years, towels have always been provided. I’m surprised at the amount of posters saying they didn’t get or expect towels.

I do pack beach towels though.

tiredteddy123 · 17/06/2018 08:31

Unless the description positively says towels (and linens) are provided I would always take our own. Have stayed self-catering cottages all my life, always been the same!

EggysMom · 17/06/2018 08:40

I don't know if it's luxury to provide towels or not. I've stayed in pretty luxurious cottages where there have been no towels, and in a few days I'm off to a Haven caravan where they are providing towels for the level of caravan we've rented. Doesn't bother me either way so long as I know in advance! We always take our own huge beach towels anyway.

We are taking 3 toilet rolls and kitchen towel with us though. Plus a decent can opener, sharp knife, spare spoons, fairy, scissors, plastic spatula, foil, salt ....

wonkylegs · 17/06/2018 08:58

We always have a beach towel or two but I'd be annoyed if linen was supposed to be provided and there was no towels.
We stayed in a very very expensive cottage in Cornwall with family, that was generally lovely but there was 1 roll of toilet paper for a 18person cottage for a week (4 loos but only one roll) - it set my usually mild mannered MIL off in a surprisingly heated rant at the caretaker.

WindyWednesday · 17/06/2018 09:17

They are admitting fault by saying they will change the description on Monday.

I’d ask for some towels or funds to buy towels. Although if you have t got a washer and a dryer, buying towels isn’t an option as they need laundering first.

We stay in a luxury place in Cornwall and the first few times we had to pay £3 each for towels, now it’s included in the price. I don’t want to fill my cases with towels as it’s so bulky.

I normally take a loo, roll and kitchen roll, chopping board etc with me, it towels I do expect. I don’t take a chair or a table with me.

BMW6 · 17/06/2018 09:33

I am intrigued - in what way is this holiday property "luxurious" when basics like towels are not provided?

PolkerrisBeach · 17/06/2018 09:34

Very small % of cottages provide towels

Totally disagree - in my experience a very small percentage don't, certainly in the UK. It's a basic.

WipsGlitter · 17/06/2018 09:47

I think the provision of towels is maybe proportionate to the price. Hence the OPs surprise they were not provided.

savingin2018welltryingto · 17/06/2018 10:09

I did respond to the Facebook chat but no reply.

Someone asked why the cottage is luxury - you know the sort, underfloor heating and Nespresso machine (this seems to be the definition!)

If anyone has any gems they've stayed in I would be very interested, always looking for more to add to the list. Preferably with towels. 😁

We stayed in an amazing cottage near Whitby whose owners left us a bottle of wine and homemade cakes. Full disabled access too including hoist and tracking in one cottage, if anyone’s interested.

Towels are an essential to me not a luxury. I've only stayed in a caravan where they weren't provided, every villa/cottage we've stayed in has had them.
A luxury would be bottles of wine, food hampers, hot tub etc.

Not providing a towel is like not providing cutlery in my mind.

WindyWednesday · 17/06/2018 10:23

Wow, Kevin, that looks amazing

WindyWednesday · 17/06/2018 10:24

I take luxury to mean, a good standard of fixtures and fittings etc. Not hot tub.

Although I think they add it in the description to bumpmthe price up a bit.

Slippery · 17/06/2018 10:25

We went to France last year and there were no towels or bed linen. We had to explain to the woman who let us in, and she ended up borrowing it all from her aunt! Then wanted us to pay an extra 20 Euro each for them.

In fairness it did state on the website that all linens were provided, so I managed to persuade them of this but it was quite a welcome.
