To be fucking furious that a Tory MP just prevented upskirting being made a criminal offence?

Tory MP Christopher Chope has just singlehandedly prevented the passing of the private members bill supported by the government that would have made upskirting a sexual offence, by shouting Object.

Can I urge you all to leave a message on his parliamentary office answerphone and email him to ask why he thinks men should be entitled to photograph women's genitalia?

Yeah, I saw this on the BBC News app whilst collecting my son from school

Fuck knows why anyone would want to block this, what possible reason is there for objecting for a bill to be passed making it illegal for perverts to upskirt.
God forbid I caught anyone doing this to my partner, I'd put the fucker in traction for a very very long time and I wouldn't give a toss what the law said.

Filthy perverted bastards, no doubt as others have already mentioned the MP who objected must enjoy watching upskirting pictures or why else would you object?

I hope the tabloids make his life fucking hell.

Makes my skin crawl.

LarkDescending · 15/06/2018 16:33

The Lucy Frazer thing involved official TV cameras at PMQ, seized upon by the usual sleazebags (tabloid sleazebags included) as a supposed “Sharon Stone” moment.

Obviously it was in fact just a “woman wears an above-the-knee skirt while pervs project their fantasies” moment.

Buggered · 15/06/2018 16:34

Heaven forbid that an MP should want to actually debate a bill rather than just pushing it through.

meditrina · 15/06/2018 16:34

And in addition to the BBC pointing out that he's done this to other Africa afternoon bills, they printed a picture of The House today. There were twenty four MPs there.

So all those who did not attend are also to blame.

Because this group could not have followed their stated policy of objecting to all bills that are not debated by a reasonable number of MPs had more than three percent of them been there.

Did your MP bother to turn up to ensure proper debate and passage?

AuntieStella · 15/06/2018 16:37

"Fuck knows anyone would want to block this, what possible reason is there for objecting for a bill to be passed making it illegal for perverts to upskirt."

As pointed out above, this is done to any Friday afternoon bill when there is only a handful of MPs present. It's no more wrong today than it is on any of those other occasions.

Bill is going back on 6 July. Perhaps if a few more MPs cared enough to actually turn up and legislate (you know, that function we elect them to do) then this wouldn't have happened.

UpstartCrow · 15/06/2018 16:38

Yanbu. Looks like I was celebrating too early.

Maybe all the people defending him can have a 'debate' about why under a womens clothing is not considered private enough to be off limits to unwanted and uninvited photography. since you don't seem to understand that yet.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 15/06/2018 16:40

Hoping karma gets him one day as that will be a hell of a lot of karma.

ilovesooty · 15/06/2018 16:41

His telephone mailbox is full. Angry

Buggered · 15/06/2018 16:41

Maybe Upstart you can explain why you want legislation to just be shoved through the commons with no debate when it carries a a two year sentence.

I imagine you would want decent parliamentary debate around the GRA if it comes before the house? So why should this be different?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 15/06/2018 16:42

I’m guessing those messages will be ‘interesting’.

QueenDoris · 15/06/2018 16:42

@UpstartCrow

So do you not think it is important to scrutinise legislation that could result in jail terms for offenders?

TeacupDrama · 15/06/2018 16:42

what is an africa afternoon?

Wilfandmum · 15/06/2018 16:42

Its disgusting and a farce that people can think thats acceptable.

kistanbul · 15/06/2018 16:44

They can't talk out a petition debate

Fightthebear · 15/06/2018 16:44

What’s to debate?

Passing the Bill at second reading today would have allowed it to go to detailed scrutiny at Committee stage and amended there IF technically necessary.

Private Members Bills are ideally suited to cross party issues like this which should be uncontroversial. Not every Bill should need extensive debate of the principles when it has cross party support as a Good Thing.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/06/2018 16:46

Bill is going back on 6 July. Perhaps if a few more MPs cared enough to actually turn up and legislate (you know, that function we elect them to do) then this wouldn't have happened But it would, it only takes a single voice of dissent

0lwen · 15/06/2018 16:46

omg WHY would he object to that.

Jux · 15/06/2018 16:46

Is there an equivalent way we can 'upskirt' him?

Have sent him an email, and tried to phone but unsurprisingly his vm is full.

IJustHadToNameChange · 15/06/2018 16:49

The problem is, that, although upskirting is technically an offence, it isn't specifically referred to in legislation.

There is no assault as such and even if offenders are caught, interpretation of the law is subjective and there are few, if any, prosecutions.

That's why this Bill was so important.

Bastard.

easyandy101 · 15/06/2018 16:52

Does anyone know why he did this ? I can’t find any reason anywhere

He's a serial objector to lots of things that pass before an empty house.

I think it's reasonable that the establishment of an offence that can land people in prison for 2 years gets a little more oversight than is provided by an empty room of uninterested people

Which seems to be his general aim in voting against a lot of stuff on a Friday afternoon

The bill isn't dead

WittyJack · 15/06/2018 16:52

His voting record is an absolute peach:

AuntieStella · 15/06/2018 16:52

"But it would, it only takes a single voice of dissent"

Would it though?

The rationale is that bills should not progress if they are not properly debated at every turn. So with only a couple of dozen MPs present, he can make that case.

In a well attended House, he cannot. Not because the power ceases to exist, but because the reason to use it does.

BBC says he (and/or his cronies) do this all the time. Where was the outcry on other occasions?

John4703 · 15/06/2018 16:53

I'm a male on here. Why would anyone with a shred of decency object to making this a law.
Taking pics up someones skirt is perverted and WRONG.

PlantsOfPerspective · 15/06/2018 16:54

Well, if he does believe that private members bills should be properly debated, shouldn't he be campaigning for that properly, rather than just blocking everything on Friday afternoons forever?

And my employer expects me to be at work when I'm supposed to be; it's clearly different for MPs though 🤔.

The whole thing is entirely frustrating.

MissBartlettsconscience · 15/06/2018 16:54

He does it all the time, but rarely in a bill which his own party supports and has backed. I guess on this occasion they didn't spend long enough wining and dining him to persuade him to agree to it, as they didn't think it was necessary.

Of course it should be scrutinised properly before becoming law, but that happens after this reading and before the next reading.

Stupid bastard.
