To be fucking furious that a Tory MP just prevented upskirting being made a criminal offence?

Tory MP Christopher Chope has just singlehandedly prevented the passing of the private members bill supported by the government that would have made upskirting a sexual offence, by shouting Object.

Can I urge you all to leave a message on his parliamentary office answerphone and email him to ask why he thinks men should be entitled to photograph women's genitalia?

Come to Scotland, it's been an offence here since 2010.
I can hadly believe a single MP has stopped a bill that would give me the same protection when visiting family in England that I have at home in Edinburgh.

MrsFogi · 15/06/2018 16:21

Rather than email him (he no doubt does not care) I suggest we email our own local MPs (if they are Tory) - I will be doing so tonight.

p.s. I am a woman who has grave concerns that the impact of proposed changes to the law relating to transgender rights will be to significantly erode women's rights. I object to being accused of transphobia for asking questions about the reforms and I do not agree that we need to subvert our language or understanding of biology in order to respect the rights of people who wish to decide on their gender-identity. I urge all women to visit the Fair Play for Women website to read about the issues and form their own views. I am grateful to MN for providing a platform where the issues can be discussed albeit in a heavily-moderataed manner (in contrast to most other social media platforms which have banned or silenced open debate).

SoddingUnicorns · 15/06/2018 16:21

He’s probably the sort of Tory who voted against it being a legal requirement for landlords to ensure a home is fit for human habitation! (Aye that happened too, and a good number of them were landlords, quelle surprise)

specialsubject · 15/06/2018 16:21

it hasn't gone through and parliamentary procedure is that it only needs one objection for this to happen.

I'm impressed; I also live in a constituency where a donkey wearing a blue rosette gets elected, but Christchurch's donkey is much much worse than ours and that is saying something. Our donkey does almost nothing - he was out of action for two months with health issues and it made no difference - but this evil filibusterer is something else.

I propose that perverted photography up skirts by men who clearly will never get laid without payment is now referred to as 'choping'.

StroppyWoman · 15/06/2018 16:21

What a hideous excuse for a human being.
Angry
I hope his mother is ashamed of him.
(I always imagine these rotters being given a right bloody roasting by their elderly mothers over a Sunday lunch in these circumstances. It helps me redirect my anger. In my head, Chope's mother has a rich and emphatic vocabulary)

Northernparent68 · 15/06/2018 16:22

Does anyone know why he did this ? I can’t find any reason anywhere

Theworldisfullofgs · 15/06/2018 16:22

He was knighted this year...

specialsubject · 15/06/2018 16:22

BTW he did vote against the revenge eviction bill. Although that has gone through, and makes no difference - there's no enforcement. Just ask anyone living in social housing with a bad landlord.

Rainydaydog · 15/06/2018 16:23

Yes I definitely think we should call it Chopeing from now on.

KeithLeMonde · 15/06/2018 16:23

He's disgusting and sadly is my local MP. I've just sent him a very angry email.

Rainydaydog · 15/06/2018 16:24

And people who do it will be known as pervy little chopers.

mostdays · 15/06/2018 16:24

This isn't a Tory v Labour issue, it's a sane people v Chope issue.

Yes, this, although I'd say this is 'decent people v Chope issue'.

What a shit. Next time someone says we don't need feminism, point to this as an example of why we bloody well do.

Theworldisfullofgs · 15/06/2018 16:24

soddingunicorns
Yes he did. He's a landlord too.
He's voted against all sorts of this.
I think he is trying to singlehandedly keep up the party's reputation.

SoddingUnicorns · 15/06/2018 16:26

@Theworldisfullofgs I wish I could say I was surprised but I’m really not. Absolutely shameful that these horrible humans get power over the most vulnerable in society and abuse it. Sickening.

endofthelinefinally · 15/06/2018 16:27

In the telegraph it states that
"Ms Frazer herself became an inadvertent victim while seated in parliament behind the prime minister at an angle that was recorded and shared widely online.."
Referring to Lucy Frazer MP.
I am aghast at this tbh,
How????

JustCallMeDory · 15/06/2018 16:28

Thank you for posting the email address. I've emailed.

Dobbythesockelf · 15/06/2018 16:29

He's a massive bellend. He doesn't care what the bill was about he just thinks it's a game to object to bills brought forward by other parties and to slow down parliamentary processes. Sadly I doubt this will stop him being elected again, my parents live in a conservative area and literally you could put a blue ribbon on anyone and the masses would vote. I've listened to many rants from my dad about it haha.

donquixotedelamancha · 15/06/2018 16:30

This callous disregard for women is what being a Tory is all about

I think that's wildly unfair. Surely callous disregard for the poor is their primary goal :-)

QueenDoris · 15/06/2018 16:30

@Northernparent68

Does anyone know why he did this ? I can’t find any reason anywhere

From the BBC website
“Sir Christopher is a leading member of a group of backbench Conservatives who make a practice of ensuring that what they see as well-meaning but flabby legislation is not lazily plopped on to the statue book by a few MPs on a poorly attended Friday sitting.
And after all this is a bill to create a new criminal offence, for which people can go to jail.
So, however worthy the cause, he insists on proper, extensive scrutiny, and he has spent most Commons Fridays for the last 20 years doing just that.”

Which actually seems a reasonable reason for objecting to it. There are many examples of bad legislation causing problems.

YearOfYouRemember · 15/06/2018 16:30

I can not compute that this is allowed. What I saw he thinking? Is he married, does he have daughters?

I'd like to email my disgust but can't think what to say. Happy to send an email if someone can help me and forward it on.

stegosauruslady · 15/06/2018 16:31

According to the BBC he is part of a group of Tory backbenchers who object to any law being passed without debate.

YearOfYouRemember · 15/06/2018 16:31

What is he thinking ffs

StroppyWoman · 15/06/2018 16:31

He and Philip Davies are peas in a pod. I'm disgusted, and hope his constituents are too

stegosauruslady · 15/06/2018 16:31

cross posted!

It does seem like a reasonable reason to object.

donquixotedelamancha · 15/06/2018 16:31

I think he is trying to singlehandedly keep up the party's reputation.

You do know that our Boris Johnson is currently our Foreign Secretary?

No, I can't believe I'm typing that either.
