So now women aren't even mentioned in cervical screening awareness activity. To quote Cancer Research UK: "cervical screening (or the smear test) is relevant for everyone aged 25-64 with a cervix."

I despair, I really do.

I would have thought “people and women with a cervix” to be far more sensible.

Why? Are women not just automatically included when we are talking about people?

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 15/06/2018 17:21

Pick your battles. Getting worked up at some wording that’s trying to be unoffensive to trans people doesn’t seem worth the effort.

Personally I'm worked up at use of language known to exclude poorer women, especially if less educated and/or E2L. Including one group shouldn't be at the cost of another very vulnerable group.

If they can't address both they need better copywriters.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/06/2018 17:27

I actually have written patient information and patient information that isn't totally clear about who it's aimed at is pretty pointless. Most people have fairly vague ideas about their reproductive biology.

Women and transmen is fine. MtF transfolk have no need for such screening.

Magpiesarehuge · 15/06/2018 17:38

Plain and simple english should be used, this is the MOST inclusive way. This will maximise the chance that the majority will understand.
It's not about keeping a group happy it's about getting the maximum number of women to have a smear test. CRUK have decided not to be inclusive. The fact that they have not done this across the board - i.e. for men is very very strange

Again, what if a lot of women aren’t that aware what a cervix actually is or that it’s a female issue with potential life threatening consequences. There’s nothing in the new wording that alerts women that this could affect them.

Just keep it simple “women and all females (between such and such age) need to contact their doctor to arrange regular smear tests - it could save your life”

notafeeling · 15/06/2018 17:45

This really upsets me. Would it have cost them anything to say "women and people with cervixes"?

As a biological woman, I am getting sick and tired of having my sex erased in a bid to be "inclusive". It's bloody lazy, is what it is.

Be inclusive of the minority without erasing the majority. I believe that trans people should be included, of course. It's just a shame that this seems to be done in a way that throws women under the bus.

I'm no bigot but this sort of thing is radicalising me day by day.

user1499173618 · 15/06/2018 17:45

Yes. We need to prioritize reaching the absolute maximum number of women whose lives could be saved by cervical screening. The message should target that and nothing else.

HarshingMyMellow · 15/06/2018 17:53

So it's open to 'anyone with a cervix' as long as they're between 25-64?

Yet they still haven't started screening and preventing in younger women.

Hmm
user1499173618 · 15/06/2018 17:55

Younger women have had the Gardasil vaccination.

HarshingMyMellow · 15/06/2018 18:01

@user1499173618 excuse my ignorance, what vaccination?

UpstartCrow · 15/06/2018 18:03

HarshingMyMellow The HPV vaccine help prevent cervical cancer, but some religious parents have been opting their daughters out. So not all girls have had it.
Its also not the only cause of cervical cancer. So young women will still need screening.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/06/2018 18:03

Presumably the HPV one?

user1499173618 · 15/06/2018 18:03

The vaccination that protects against cervical cancer.

lostlemon · 15/06/2018 18:04

My understanding is that the Gardasil vaccination does not protect against all strains and women should still have a smear. I'm actually a bit worried that the younger generation may stop having smears or be prevented because of this.

user1499173618 · 15/06/2018 18:06

You are right that the Gardasil vaccination does not protect 100% against cervical cancer. However, public health campaigns need to target the most vulnerable and the greatest numbers. Young people who have been vaccinated are not a high risk group.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/06/2018 18:06

I eagerly await the day when I will be called for a prostate check up the way this is going.

user1499173618 · 15/06/2018 18:10
Grin
HarshingMyMellow · 15/06/2018 18:15

Oh, I knew about the HPV jab.

As a PP said, it doesn't protect against every strain. The girls who have had it are still at risk.

upsideup · 15/06/2018 18:22

"women and people with cervixes"

But women are people with cervixes?

Miladamermalada · 15/06/2018 18:25

This is DANGEROUS. For those who don't know what a cervix is they won't realise. And there are women like that.
Just ask WOMEN to go for a smear test. Because it's just for WOMEN.
FFS

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/06/2018 18:56

Miladam, you're spot on. People are so busy worrying about gender they're forgetting about the far larger population with poor English or a sketchy idea of what a smear test is.

Magpiesarehuge · 15/06/2018 19:07

this is all about forcing a new social structure on society. Coming to your primary school kids soon. If you think CR inclusivity is the way forward then this needs to be carried out in every sphere.

Trills · 15/06/2018 19:13

I thought it was a perfectly clear and sensible way to describe the issue.

The people who need cervical screening are people with cervixes.

Not all women have cervixes, and not all the people who have cervixes will think "that's me" if you say "women".

This is not the only way that people find out about this screening, it is one of many (I got a letter from my GP, for example).

BloominLuvley · 15/06/2018 19:14

"everyone with a cervix"

This makes me feel so Shock and Angry I am speechless.

Agree with NotaFeeling As a biological woman, I am getting sick and tired of having my sex erased in a bid to be "inclusive". It's bloody lazy, is what it is

I am also not a bigot, far from it, but also find myself increasingly radicalised against all this fixated liberal crap thats shoved down our throats from morning to night.

CurbsideProphet · 15/06/2018 19:18

I presume they will also be changing guidance on prostate cancer to "people with a prostate", or penile cancer to "people with a penis"?
