To think £17 an hour for a cleaner is unreasonable?

Is genuinely not sure if I am BU here.

We moved to London a while ago and are looking for a cleaner. The one we had out of London was £13 ph (and AMAZING). Most of the people we’ve got in touch with recently haven’t responded and the one that has has said £17ph.

AIBU? Or is this just the cost of a cleaner?

Reasonable imo

Tobebythesea · 13/06/2018 21:47

I think that’s a bit steep to be honest. We pay £13 ph on the outskirts of London.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/06/2018 21:48

I pay £15 outside London.

JassyRadlett · 13/06/2018 21:49

I’m in a leafy bit of SW London/Surrey and pay £12/hr.

Seniorcitizen1 · 13/06/2018 21:49

Pay £15 in Scotland

ShirleyPhallus · 13/06/2018 21:49

I dunno. Cleaning up someone else’s shit stains seems like a job you couldn’t ever pay me to do so from that perspective £17ph is very reasonable

bathildab · 13/06/2018 21:50

No this is very high. Going rate £12 but more with agency.

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 13/06/2018 21:50

We are in an affluent part of Berkshire and pay £12.50 which doesn’t actually feel like enough if I’m honest given the cost of living round here.

RippleEffects · 13/06/2018 21:52

I think it depends on number of hours. If you're after an hour here and there then the £17 includes travel costs and time. If it's a 3.5hr plus block with no agency/ overhead charge to take into account it sounds a bit steep.

Adelino · 13/06/2018 21:54

I think it sounds reasonable. How many hours are you offering your cleaner? If only a couple then it is sensible for her to build the cost and time of travel into her hourly rate imo.

Adelino · 13/06/2018 21:55

Cross posts!

Antonia87 · 13/06/2018 21:57

London and £10 an hour. Sounds steep to me !

upsideup · 13/06/2018 22:00

I think thats normal london rates, doesnt seem unreasonable to me.
We pay £16 an hour outside of london

RoseanneBarred · 13/06/2018 22:01

Also Berkshire - £10 per hour. We replied to her ad at that rate.

DuchyDuke · 13/06/2018 22:02

Depends where in London. It’s cheap in Central. But in the suburbs where cleaners are more likely to be local you could probably get one for a bit over minimum wage.

XiCi · 13/06/2018 22:06

£10 an hour is the norm around here. £12.50 through an agency. Do you have any friends that could recommend someone to you?

dementedma · 13/06/2018 22:06

expensive. in Scotland and £12 an hour for mum's cleaner.

SandyY2K · 13/06/2018 22:08

Sounds expensive to me.

Rumpleteezer · 13/06/2018 22:12

London £13 ph here

tkband3 · 13/06/2018 22:12

Is it with an agency? Does she bring her own cleaning products/equipment? I pay £13 an hour to an agency (London suburbs). I have heard of higher charges when they don't use your supplies/hoover etc.

Bumbelinadance · 13/06/2018 22:15

It does seem to have rocketed in the last few years
I live outside London ,,, commuter rather than surburban surrey
I pay £13 an hour

I don’t think this is high and she is very good , thorough , reliable and we like her a lot
I think I got lucky and would probably concede to paying more if asked

I provide all cleaning products

She’s a very up together young Mum and “ professional “
She drives a far nicer car than me

I am a single mum with a full time , physically demanding job
For me it’s worth putting the cash towards that and budgeting elsewhere for it
My hard earn motto is look after your cleaner and childcare

Hope this helps

Nightmanagerfan · 13/06/2018 22:15

SE London zone 2 - £10 an hour. Our cleaner before this one charged the same and it seems to be the going rate in this area.

Loonoon · 13/06/2018 22:15

We are greater London, not far from Croydon. We recently gave our cleaner a raise and she is now on £13 an hour. I know she charges new clients more so assuming you are living somewhere quite upmarket £17 sounds like a realistic price.

thegreylady · 13/06/2018 22:15

I pay £10 an hour in Shropshire.

Notcontent · 13/06/2018 22:16

£17? No way! That must be through an agency... obviously it’s quite a bit more through an agency as you are in effect paying a large per hour fee to the agency...
