To think £17 an hour for a cleaner is unreasonable?

Is genuinely not sure if I am BU here.

We moved to London a while ago and are looking for a cleaner. The one we had out of London was £13 ph (and AMAZING). Most of the people we’ve got in touch with recently haven’t responded and the one that has has said £17ph.

AIBU? Or is this just the cost of a cleaner?

£14 per hour here, London zone 2

TheGlitterFairy · 13/06/2018 22:18

£13/hr here in W London, zone 3....

PUGaLUGS · 13/06/2018 22:19

I pay £15 an hour - Yorkshire

BewareOfDragons · 13/06/2018 22:19

I think it's too much.

thegoodnamesarealltaken · 13/06/2018 22:19

Zone 2 and £12

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 13/06/2018 22:20

That's reasonable for london imo.

Liz79 · 13/06/2018 22:20

I'm an experienced midwife, I have a degree and professional registration, I have to do a considerable amount of training each year to maintain and improve my skills. I'm responsible for mothers' and babies' lives. I also do a fair amount of cleaning. Usually of a fair amount of blood, shit, urine, liquor. I get £18.19/hr. (But more for unsocial hours, though I doubt many cleaners do nights, maybe weekends)

LanguidLobster · 13/06/2018 22:20

Seems steep to me

Notcontent · 13/06/2018 22:21

If £17 is the going rate I might start doing cleaning as a weekend job!!! Grin

MrsK1087 · 13/06/2018 22:21

We live 30 mins from London and pay £11 p/h and she brings her own products and hoover.

RailReplacementBusService · 13/06/2018 22:22

For outer London I would say that was high

nightmanagerfan we are also in SE London zone 2 and pay £10 per hour. I was beginning to think we were seriously underpaying (and maybe we are) but glad to see it’s the same as others in our area!

donajimena · 13/06/2018 22:26

I think anyone paying 10 per hour should be ashamed. It works out less than minimum wage. You need to pay at least 12.
I pay 20 per month insurance. 30 products. Then if my clients or I go on holiday I can't fill those hours but don't get paid. Please do the decent thing.

CanaBanana · 13/06/2018 22:27

The cleaning lady won't receive that amount. If she's through an agency there will be overheads like doing admin and payroll etc. If she's self employed then she'll have to pay insurance, hire an accountant, etc. She probably ends up with about £10-12 per hour in her pocket before tax.

Bitlost · 13/06/2018 22:27

£16 an hour here in South East London. Cleaner is employed by a business which pays her London Living wage, sick pay, maternity leave etc....

SchrodingersCaterpillar · 13/06/2018 22:29

That’s extortionate! Zone 3 West London and my cleaner has just put up her fee to £11/hour from £10.

PinkHeart5914 · 13/06/2018 22:33

My cleaner has been cleaning for me 5 years now, she chargers £17 per hour but I always give £20! She is bloody brilliant and the only cleaner I’ve ever had that bothers turning up on time, cleans properly, that I’d trust to leave in my home etc so she is worth every penny Imo!

NQ midwife but experienced nurse, I earn just under £17 p/h in
My current nursing job... think we might be in the wrong business!

photoroseframe · 13/06/2018 22:38

i was quoted what worked out to £21 per hour in January 2018. i was so shocked i had to check with the agency that i'd read the quote right.

for context, "nice" market town in northern midlands.
5 bed, 4 reception rooms and 4 bathrooms.

MamaMiapartytime · 13/06/2018 22:38

But you get holiday pay and sick pay and get to work your hours in blocks?

photoroseframe · 13/06/2018 22:40

for further context, i earn £13 p/h. was expecting to pay £16-18

Doubletrouble99 · 13/06/2018 22:44

I pay £10 an hour in Scotland.

ReggaetonLente · 13/06/2018 22:44

Zone 2 south London, £11ph

HateIsNotGood · 13/06/2018 22:45

Possibly a bit steep but you might be paying agency fees in lieu of the checks and admin you would/should do otherwise. Given the high housing costs in London and/or the commuting costs I can only imagine that £14ph is the equivalent to using slaves.
