AIBU?

to wonder why some posters on MN are so nasty?

All up for a good debate, and a disagreement about views and opinions.

But some posters are so nasty. Either overtly - personal insults, comments like 'every road has someone like you' which I saw on a thread recently and so on; or deliberately doing the 'look how tolerant I am and how I'm very intolerantly insulting you whilst beamingly being tolerant' type posts.

I've seen a lot of this lately and it's beginning to really put me of MN.

Its non personal and people can hide behind the profile.

Ah, the weekly 'you're all bitches' thread!

I hadn't spotted one for a while. Nice to see the old MN traditions still being observed

You could easily ask
'Why do people post on an opinion forum when they believe that they are right and just want to be agreed with?'

Quite a few posters do this and then get all pissy and offended when others have a difference of opinion.

But all the other boards are fine, witty, intelligent, thoughtful women with lots of help and advice.

Most or some but not all of the boards.

And you think threads like this make any difference?

Exactly, it's online media. Some people will pretend that its the other who only speak like that online but conveniently ignore what they themselves post online.

The online world has changed debate, to try and pretend that x is showing everyone as being nasty will 9/10 ignore that you are doing Y which they think is nasty.

If however you want some hugbox for for a paid forum. Pretending you are up for generic robust debate and starting a thread like this shows your not as open as you perceive.

Cue the anecdotal data that this thread will be filled up with to prove that the "other" is nasty..

But there's a difference between robust debate, focusing on the topic under discussion, and nasty, personal, insulting remarks. But so many posters seem to resort to the latter, rather than just engaging in a bit of debate. When anyone calls them on it they should 'understand it's AIBU' etc etc.

Pretty much every single thread like this is started by someone who only or mainly posts in AIBU.

The recent pigeon one is a good example of this. People saying the op was talking bollocks and openly mocking her. Really nasty for absolutely no reason

Who are you to be slating us? We could start another thread saying why is there always a professional offense taker hanging around on here ready to have a whinge!

I used to post a couple of years ago and rejoined recently. I think most people are fine. If you're like me and mainly read 'active' posts then I suppose there's a higher chance of seeing not so nice comments as a lot of those posts fill up with comments/are active for a while because people are debating.

In my experience MN is no different to other Internet forums.

Anonymity allows obnoxious cretins to be themselves. If they behaved like that in real life, someone would deck them. And they know it.

Because it was bollocks.

We could all pretend that every OP is taken on face value but most people have been on the internet for a fair few years by now.

True, all the boards can have knob heads on them. But most of the keyboard warriors frequent aibu.

Never ever ever go to aibu for a moan. You will get slated unless your aibu is somthing like -

Aibu for saving puppy's, LTB, and personally getting rid of all p&c spaces and replacing them with bb spaces. Oh and never judging twatty kids because they could have asd even though I know they don't.

And even then, it would be full of people slaughtering you for misusing apostrophes Grin

No one's 'having a whinge' busybarbara. I'm talking about the exceptionally rude and nasty posters on here who make insulting and personal comments instead of just disagreeing with a poster's view.

Why do you think I'm slating 'us'? If you are one of the posters I'm talking about, fair enough give your view as to why you think that kind of behaviour is okay.

But just describing me as a 'professional offence taker hanging around waiting to have a whinge' is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Because it was bollocks.

If I don't believe a thread I stop reading it. I don't start abused the poster.

Why do people post on threads they believe aren't true? Just stop reading.

Envy, insecurity, unhappiness, discontentment, entitlement and disagreeableness in the main.

Mental health issues and existential crises in a minority of instances.

Sometimes a mix of both.

I suspect that the most used board is AIBU, so it will have the most keyboard warriors, but there are lots in other sections.

It's internet 101, to pretend that you are complaining about disagreeing views when we are on anonymous forum with the ability to name change means that the majority of posters pick and choose when to be a keyboard warrior and hide under anonymity.

You will always come across dissenting views, yes people are more open online, that doesn't relate to the other being wrong or even nasty. trying to tone police forums generally end badly and more often than not in the death throes of forums, out the people who are generally perceived as the "good ones"

Meh I'm a dick in real life and online. Don't have the patience to pretend otherwise.

Had my arse handed to me several times, either because I was being unreasonable and just wanted to have my tantrum or because I was plain daft. It is what it is.

Most people on MN are fine. I don't mind people being sweary, frank, blunt, whatever. There are a few are sadly out to hurt by making snide little digs. But I do find them to be in the minority and their comments tend to end up getting pulled as I and others complain about them.

I remember starting off a thread about vaccination a few years ago, moaning about having got whooping cough in my 40s and having a pop at anti-vaxxers. The thread got pretty heated with plenty of freely exchanged insults. But it was also full of also genuine interest and changed the way I thought about a lot of the issues. I honestly can't think of another discussion forum where that would have happened about such a controversial topic - not one that's still going anyway.

Seriously if you think MN is bad you should check out political Twitter.
