Butter on bread

Please help me decide who is BU here. When you make a sandwich, do you butter both sides of the bread, or just one side?? Me and DH have differing opinions....

the 'inside' of both slices iyswim
no. other. way.

LeighaJ · 11/06/2018 16:53

Neither because I'm American, but my British husband butters each slice on one side.

Each slice on one side (the inside)

tigercub50 · 11/06/2018 16:54

I usually do one, although often the other will have mayo on it so doesn’t need butter as well

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/06/2018 16:54

Just one, but I usually put some thing else, like mayo/mustard/ketchup on the other side.

ShatnersBassoon · 11/06/2018 16:55

Neither, I don't put butter in sandwiches. I think buttering both slices is the norm though.

FASH84 · 11/06/2018 16:55

Both slices inside. I'm curious to know which way you make yours!

eddiemairswife · 11/06/2018 16:55

If you butter both sides of the bread it must be very messy to hold.

Trinity66 · 11/06/2018 16:55

I don't usually have butter in sandwiches but If I do, I would butter the inside of both slices

FASH84 · 11/06/2018 16:56

Just to add even if I'm adding pickle, relish, horseradish, salad cream etc I still butter both

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/06/2018 16:56

Depends on the filling.

If it’s a spread of some description or even Brie soft enough to spread I’ll butter one side. Normally both though.

Firesuit · 11/06/2018 16:57

I have heard of buttering both side of the bread, but that's when you are going to put the sandwich in a toaster. (Possibly before non-stick cooking surfaces became available.)

Trinity66 · 11/06/2018 16:58

Your OP makes it sound like the outside and inside though which would be a slippery situation Grin Unless its a toasted sandwich then both sides is delicious

Trinity66 · 11/06/2018 16:58

Firesuit cross post

Firesuit · 11/06/2018 16:58

In a sandwich toaster, that is. I think having butter on the outside would stop the bread sticking to the toaster, in ye olden days.

Fairylea · 11/06/2018 16:58

Both slices on the inside. Helps everything stick together!

BurnerName · 11/06/2018 16:59

I butter the inside of the 2 slices to stop any sauce or moistness from the filling making the bread soggy.

I would still butter the outsides in a sandwich toaster eventhough it's non stick, it makes the outside taste better and crisp up nicer

Firesuit · 11/06/2018 17:00

I have occasionally buttered the outside despite having a Teflon sandwich toaster, but concluded it wasn't really worthwhile/necessary.

Candyflip · 11/06/2018 17:00

Neither. Butter is for toast, and potatoes. Why would you need it in a sandwich?

CocoLoco87 · 11/06/2018 17:01

Both slices inside!!

Firesuit · 11/06/2018 17:01

I'll try it again sometime.

Bagadverts · 11/06/2018 17:01

I butter one side of each slice (become the insides of the sandwich.)

BackforGood · 11/06/2018 17:02

Presuming you mean one side of each slice of bread.....

It depends on filling.
Mostly I don't have any in a sandwich - just the meat / cheese and pickle or salad or whatever. On the odd occasion I do, then both slices would be buttered. Never come across one slice only being buttered. Sounds a bit indecisive.
