Butter on bread

Please help me decide who is BU here. When you make a sandwich, do you butter both sides of the bread, or just one side?? Me and DH have differing opinions....

Both sides, I cannot stand soggy bread or dry bread.

What is the point of buttering one side? Why bother at all if your just going to eat dry bread with other other slice.

DoneDisappeared · 11/06/2018 17:19

You can get egg cups in the states! I just don't think it is as popular an egg cooking option as it is here.

Some people even put butter in sandwiches, but again, it's not a default option. (I'm another American who skips butter in sandwiches 🤢)

I was once making a sandwich for my sister's kids and she told me to make sure I buttered both sides of the bread for them. Since it never even occurred to me that not everyone buttered both slices I thought she must mean both sides of each slice. How strange, I thought, but if that's how they like it. Oh dear, the mess... Grin

Also I might be a bit scared of her so I just generally do as I am told without questioning it!

DoubleLottchen · 11/06/2018 17:22

Wait, wait what?

Americans don't have egg cups? Shock Shock

iklboo · 11/06/2018 17:24

I've just taken a loaf out of the bread maker. I'm waiting for it to cool down a little bit then I'll spread enough butter on to make a forensic dental impression. Well, maybe not quite that much.

LeighaJ · 11/06/2018 17:26

I've never known any Americans that put butter on sandwiches. I lived in 4 different states, none were on the East Coast so not sure if it's different there.

The exception to this is putting a bit of butter on the outside only of a grilled cheese sandwich for cooking purposes more than flavour.

Most people use mayo or mustard on meat or cheese sandwiches in the US and jam or honey on peanut butter sandwiches.

BlooBagoo · 11/06/2018 17:27

Both slices on the inside and it doesn't matter what the filling is, even egg mayo is better with a bit of butter. DH used to only butter one side of a roll if we were having one instead of a sandwich. He's learned to do it properly on both sides now though. Grin

amusedbush · 11/06/2018 17:28

I eat my sandwiches dry. Unless it's some sort of salad-y sandwich, in which case I'd have mayonnaise.

I can't butter them now, not after years of my dad making my packed lunch for primary school. I'm still traumatised by the ham sliding around on the buttered bread and you could see teeth marks in it when you took a bite. Bleugh.

LeighaJ · 11/06/2018 17:28

I don't like eggs so I can't help out with whether or not Americans have egg cups. Grin

Miscella · 11/06/2018 17:28

I still haven’t recovered from ordering a bacon sandwich in England and being presented with a couple of rashers between two slices of dry bread. It was grim.

If bread is involved then so is butter. It is downright weird not to have butter on bread, regardless of what else is going on there.

And in true irish style I prefer kerrygold spread thickly....very thickly.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 11/06/2018 17:30

Depends on filling

catandpanda · 11/06/2018 17:30

I butter both, DH butters one. This morning he made me a chicken sandwich and only buttered one side and that was the end of the sliced loaf side. Shock

catandpanda · 11/06/2018 17:31

I wouldn't have any butter if cheese or mayo in something. I also wouldn't use the last end slice of bread.

TheFairyCaravan · 11/06/2018 17:32

Neither. Butter is for the bin, not eating. It’s horrible stuff imo. 🤮

SenecaFalls · 11/06/2018 17:33

I'm American, so no butter on sandwiches.

And, yes, egg cups are rare in the United States. Most people would have no idea what to do with one.

Kismett · 11/06/2018 17:34

Americans typically use mayo or mustard in sandwiches, not butter.

Butter is used on toast of course.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/06/2018 17:36

Butter stops the filling making the bread soggy so you need it on both slices. And buttered up to the crusts if you please (before removing them, obvs! Smile)

Katedotness1963 · 11/06/2018 17:37

Butter both slices. I've had this conversation with American friends and they think the idea of buttering bread for a sandwich is disgusting.

Rainydaydog · 11/06/2018 17:42

Americans you are right about boiled eggs they are fowl (🐔) but wrong about not buttering your sarnies.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/06/2018 17:43

Most people don't use buttter though: they use some crappy fake butter spread.

I wonder how many people who claim to dislike butter actually dislike spread? Surely no one could dislike proper butter?

FrangipaniBlue · 11/06/2018 17:43

Depends what's going in it - dry filling like cheese or ham then it goes on both sides, wet filling like jam then butter one side jam the other.

Hygge · 11/06/2018 17:44

If I was making a sandwich with two slices of bread I would butter one side of each slice to go on the inside of the sandwich, and the outside of each slice would be unbuttered.

If I'm having mayo or sauce or something then I'd use that instead of butter, and spread that on each of the inner sides.

America is missing out on soft boiled eggs in egg cups.
