Butter on bread

Please help me decide who is BU here. When you make a sandwich, do you butter both sides of the bread, or just one side?? Me and DH have differing opinions....

Just one side that the filling is on however if the filling is something like chicken mayo then I wouldn’t use butter

Rainydaydog · 11/06/2018 17:03

I want a toasted sandwich now!

SimonBridges · 11/06/2018 17:05

I think the op means both slices rather than both sides.

It depends on the filling. Just one side if it also has mayo.

Uyulala · 11/06/2018 17:05

Neither because I'm American

Americans don't butter their sandwiches!? Shock

BustopherJones · 11/06/2018 17:05

DP has been known to butter just one slice. Not because he’s got mayonnaise or mustard or whatever on the other slice. He just thought that was what everyone did. Sociopath.

AnnieOH1 · 11/06/2018 17:05

I only butter bread for crisp sandwiches and plain meat sandwiches. But if I add salad or pickles etc then no butter ever. I absolutely don't understand why anyone would add butter to jam or marmalade either. Marmite gets a pass but that's it.

Oysterbabe · 11/06/2018 17:06

You butter each slice on the inside.

The two sides that will be inside the sandwich unless it's toasted in which case it's the outside sides. Sometimes I switch up one side of butter for mayo or whatever sauce I'm having instead.

GreenFlamingo11 · 11/06/2018 17:08

A thin spread on one side of one slice. Can't stand too much butter in sandwiches. Boak.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/06/2018 17:08

I butter both slices because I don't like soggy bread, some sandwiches are too dry if I don't, and I like butter. I'm not a skinflint.

DickensianHysteric · 11/06/2018 17:08

I butter one of the slices on the inside, put filling on it and then top with a completely unbuttered slice.

Assburgers · 11/06/2018 17:12

Americans don’t butter bread?! This is like when I found out they don’t have egg cups Shock

june04 · 11/06/2018 17:13

I butter just one side

GoldenButtercup · 11/06/2018 17:14

Depends on the filling. Egg mayo & cress - no butter. Ham salad - butter both slices.

Trinity66 · 11/06/2018 17:15

Whaaaaaaat? How do they eat soft boiled eggs then? Shock

Loonoon · 11/06/2018 17:15

I do both because butter is delicious.

Assburgers · 11/06/2018 17:16

Trinity they just.... don’t 😐

Orangecake123 · 11/06/2018 17:16

Both!

Ginmakesitallok · 11/06/2018 17:17

We only butter one side of the sandwich - both sides would just mean too much butter.

TheVanguardSix · 11/06/2018 17:17

Butter both sides.
It's funny. I am American and I grew up with my Irish mother, straight off a Kilkenny farm. My packed lunches consisted of brown bread with butter on one side and brown bread with brown sauce and butter on on the other slice, then slivers of the leftover roast beef packed in between with lettuce and tomato.
I hated it. I used to bin it. Can you believe that? I found the butter too heavy, too weird. My palate was not the same as my mother's.
Yet I came to the UK 23 years ago and butter and me have been tight ever since.
There's nothing like even just a plain slice of bread, toasted or not, with lashings of butter.

BigApple11 · 11/06/2018 17:17

I'm sorry for any confusion!!! I meant, do you butter both of the insides of each slice. For a regular sandwich.

It turns out you mostly agree that my DH is U. He only butters one side and only smears one small smidge. And that's for the kids sandwiches- my DH doesn't eat butter ATALL and eats his own sandwiches dry Envy

Toasties obviously need buttering on all 4 sides Grin

Oh Sad No Soldiers?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/06/2018 17:18

No butter, unless it's a jam sandwich. I like butter, but I think it's unnecessary in a sandwich, and it interferes with the other flavours. You have to have it in a jam sandwich to stop the jam making the bread soggy.

BalloonFlowers · 11/06/2018 17:18

I love butter. Why have I never thought to butter both slices of bread?
Oh man. Those ham sandwiches are going to be even better. Proper bread, ham, double butter.... how long til I fly?
