Butter on bread

Please help me decide who is BU here. When you make a sandwich, do you butter both sides of the bread, or just one side?? Me and DH have differing opinions....

No butter or margarine it's revolting and makes everything in the sandwich taste of butter.

ethelfleda · 11/06/2018 17:48

Nice thick spread of butter on the inside of each piece. And I mean butter - not marg which is the devil's food.

I also do toasted sandwiches in the frying pan. Much nicer. Especially brushed with egg. Mmmmm

SenecaFalls · 11/06/2018 17:51

Americans put spreads on sandwiches for the flavor, not to keep them from getting soggy. And we eat them right away so there's no time for them to get soggy.

When I'm in the UK, I do like butter on a bacon roll. It's difficult to get back bacon in the US so this is a treat I cross the ocean for.

ilovepixie · 11/06/2018 17:53

I butter both slices, I don't like mayo or salad cream or relish so the bread would be too dry without butter.

BlueTrousers · 11/06/2018 17:57

People put butter in jam sandwiches?! 🤢🤢🤢

Norma27 · 11/06/2018 17:59

Cannot stand butter or margarine. Cannot buy shop sandwiches as they always have some spread in them.

GummyGoddess · 11/06/2018 18:04

Both sides obviously. Butter is delicious, my toddler likes sucking the butter off of his toast.

Have a friend who butters burger rolls when having a BBQ, that's a bit odd.

Rainydaydog · 11/06/2018 18:05

I love butter in a jam sandwich. And it lowers the gi rating.

Glaciferous · 11/06/2018 18:05

I love butter and I would definitely butter both slices of bread on the inside for any sandwich. Mayo etc just makes the bread soggy. You need butter as well.

And I can't understand why on earth you wouldn't put butter in a jam sandwich? It would be horrid without butter.

Glaciferous · 11/06/2018 18:06

NB When I say butter, I mean butter. NOT margarine which is disgusting.

GreenTulips · 11/06/2018 18:06

I put butter in sausage sandwiches but not hot dogs!! No idea why!!

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 11/06/2018 18:09

Complete swerveball : In the late 1970s when peanut butter first appeared on our supermarket shelves (in the north of England anyway) my mum would not let me have butter on my toast if I was having peanut butter - she said it was extravagant. I was outraged. She let me have butter with other spreads like marmite and jam though.

BlueTrousers · 11/06/2018 18:10

You jam & butterers, do you also put butter with nutella, marmalade or peanut butter too?
🤢

BlueTrousers · 11/06/2018 18:10

Oh or dairylea?

BlueTrousers · 11/06/2018 18:11

Oh x-post onemorecup 🤢

Vagndidit · 11/06/2018 18:13

I grew up with this crap on my sandwiches instead of butter. Like butter, it has no place in any sandwich.

Now I just stick with mayo.

Erm, yes. Is that wrong? I like butter.

Glaciferous · 11/06/2018 18:14

I really want bread and jam now (and butter). Damn you all.

Bluelonerose · 11/06/2018 18:16

Butter both sides for a chip butty.
Mayo both sides for a sandwich.

UrsulaPandress · 11/06/2018 18:17

Dear god it's like a parallel universe!

Both insidesbuttered with a real good salted butter. Spread right to the edge.

Of course peanut butter needs butter

And burger buns.

Sheesh.

FASH84 · 11/06/2018 18:19

@BigApple11
It turns out you mostly agree that my DH is U. He only butters one side and only smears one small smidge. And that's for the kids sandwiches- my DH doesn't eat butter ATALL and eats his own sandwiches dry

Rainydaydog · 11/06/2018 18:19

Yes and I also put butter on my scone for a cream tea

GlitterGlue · 11/06/2018 18:21

Hang on, Americans don’t butter their bread? What? Why not?

Bambamber · 11/06/2018 18:21

Butter both slices of bread right to the edges regardless of filling.

My husband thinks I'm weird because I have butter if I'm having marmite and even butter my toast if having cheese on toast Grin

LemonysSnicket · 11/06/2018 18:32

The inside of both slices. I have also been known to soak an extra piece in gravy and layer it in the middle a la Ross Geller.
