To wonder how on Earth I can manage 10,000 steps

I have a fit bit zip that I wear on my body. Yesterday I walked for 6 hours solid as well as pottering before and after, I managed just over 11000 steps. I want to do the 1 million steps challenge from July to September for diabetes uk but I work a desk job and generally average 3,000 steps a day how on Earth will I hit my target of 11,000 steps a day on a normal day?! I DO have a very long stride not sure if this is a factor

Six hours solid and only 11000 steps? By solid do you mean you were on a walk or that you were pottering around the house? If on a walk I think your Fitbit may be faulty.

MrsJacksonBrodieTheSecond · 10/06/2018 17:08

A six hour walk would be way more than 10,000 steps.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 10/06/2018 17:08

What?! You really walked constantly for six hours and that was it? That doesn't sound right Confused

I hit 14,000 on a normal day to and from work, walking around, going to the shop etc.

FissionChips · 10/06/2018 17:08

I also think your fit bit is faulty.

RedCorvette · 10/06/2018 17:08

There's no way you only did 11,000 steps if you walked for 6 solid hours. A slow to medium pace would be 3 miles an hour - that's 18 miles and 18 miles is 30,000 at the very least. Your Fitbit is wonky!

hopelessandhopeful · 10/06/2018 17:08

Hmm, doesn't sound right to me.

Osopolar · 10/06/2018 17:08

Or that it is not positioned properly? I have a wrist one so can't comment on a body one I'm afraid. In terms of managing with a sedentary job are you able to walk to and from work? Head out for a walk in the evening (lovely at this time of year when it is a bit cooler)?

NoSquirrels · 10/06/2018 17:08

When you say you “walked for six hours solid” what do you mean by that?

Walking round town, hiking, or just on your feet in the house?

Sounds very unusual to only make 11,000 otherwise and I’d be wondering if your Fitbit is working properly...

HarrietKettleWasHere · 10/06/2018 17:08

Count them on your phone as well and see if it matches up.

SEsofty · 10/06/2018 17:08

Think that your Fitbit is broken

camelfinger · 10/06/2018 17:09

That doesn’t sound right. My step count so far today is 11,740 which is 8.4km if that helps for a comparison.

ichifanny · 10/06/2018 17:09

I just fart about the house doing basic chores and do 10,000 I do 20’000 in a day at work

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 10/06/2018 17:10

I think something's up with your fitbit! There's no way you walked for 6 hours solid and only did 11000 steps, it takes me about an hour and half, about 4 miles to do 10000 steps, it's not that difficult to do an hour walk in the evening and then the other few steps will be made up throughout the day.

Theperfectchangeling · 10/06/2018 17:11

No way, My husbabd and I can go on a long dog walk and easily do 8k in an about an hour (brisk walking), so if you were (genuinely) walking solidly (and briskly) for 6hrs and had a working device, you would have hit at least 30k!

Ishouldntbesolucky · 10/06/2018 17:11

No, I agree with the others that there's no way 6 hours of walking equates to 11,000 steps. BUT were you actually walking or just on your feet? I've certainly noticed that I can spend ages at the park with the dc, come home tired and not have achieved many steps. Whereas in a decent half hour walk you can achieve loads!

bigKiteFlying · 10/06/2018 17:11

That means that it takes over 2,000 steps to walk one mile; and 10,000 steps would be almost 5 miles

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/06/2018 17:12

I agree with other posters, that's way off for six hours. I used to walk to work which was about 20 minutes either way. That, together with other general walking around as part of daily life, was generally around 10,000 steps. A day in London walking around the tube and to/from the office from the station, plus a walk along the river after work would often be 20,000.

A quick Google suggests that even walking slowly for six hours would be over 20,000 so I think your Fitbit is faulty.

fourpawswhite · 10/06/2018 17:12

Yeah, faulty.

I do roughly a thousand every 9 minutes at an average walk, like not pushing. So an hour and a half almost at 10,000.

f83mx · 10/06/2018 17:13

Nahhh you defo did more than that - do you have an i phone and did you have phone on you when you were walking? check the health thing on that as a comparison ?

BlossomRain · 10/06/2018 17:14

By 6 hours solid I mean no break, we were at a safari park and didn’t stop the whole time, I was devestated when I seen the results on the fit bit. I’ve only just bought it so it shouldn’t be faulty

OP posts:
SilverHairedCat · 10/06/2018 17:14

Yes, that's seems odd! I have a 34" inside leg, so I'm guessing a reasonable stride and I'll knock out 3000 steps wandering from my office to the shops for a sandwich and back again in 30 mins.

adaline · 10/06/2018 17:14

But was that just wandering around a safari park? Surely you were stopping to look at animals, to eat and such during that time?

PinkSnowAndStars · 10/06/2018 17:14

Were you pushing a buggy or something?!

Raven88 · 10/06/2018 17:15

Are you sure it's working? Try switching the app on and walking whilst watching it and see if it's counting every step.

NotARegularPenguin · 10/06/2018 17:15

If I walk for an hour solid actually on a walk I get between 6000 and 7000 steps.
