To wonder how on Earth I can manage 10,000 steps

I have a fit bit zip that I wear on my body. Yesterday I walked for 6 hours solid as well as pottering before and after, I managed just over 11000 steps. I want to do the 1 million steps challenge from July to September for diabetes uk but I work a desk job and generally average 3,000 steps a day how on Earth will I hit my target of 11,000 steps a day on a normal day?! I DO have a very long stride not sure if this is a factor

I wear my fitbit zip on my bra strap or waistband/trouser pocket. DH always puts his in his pocket. We walk at a ratio of 9 steps (me) to 10 steps (him) and our daily count if we’re out walking reflects this.

We did do quite a lot of counting actual steps and comparing when we first got them (sad geeks that we are). Ours work fine for actual walking or housework etc, not so much for shuffling round the tropical house at the zoo!

17,500 today. This means I can have a gin and tonic. 😄

JustDanceAddict · 10/06/2018 18:40

6 hours of solid walking would give me about 36,000 as I usually average 6000 per hour so yours is faulty. Dh is similar to me but has a bigger stride.
It’s hard to get 10000 a day if you have a desk job but you need to walk at lunchtimes or/and in the evening and go to the gym.

NewBallsPlease00 · 10/06/2018 18:42

I did a marathon walking for 7 hoursvand did about 30k steps

GiddyGardner · 10/06/2018 18:51

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. I walk my dog for an hour in a morning, I clock up 2 miles and 6k steps (and that's at s slow pace as she has to sniff everything)!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/06/2018 18:51

I don't think I'll ever manage 10k steps regularly as I drive to work and and have a desk job.

Your Fitbit does sound faulty though OP. My first Fitbit was a Zip and I always wore it on my waistband and it was pretty accurate, even after it was put in the washing machine.

(I got over 3000 steps for that!)

Isabella1978 · 10/06/2018 18:58

Your Fitbit isn't registering properly...as dh has just pointed out the point of a bra is to stop things moving about so a Fitbit most prob won't work if in the cup of yours!
As an aside, I have a wrist Fitbit and average 7500 steps per day but had hip replacement 6 weeks ago so not able to walk much. The Fitbit did struggle to register movement when I was in my wheelchair so placement does play a big part in how it calculates steps.

Buteo · 10/06/2018 18:59

I had a Zip and used to clip it in the middle of my bra (facing in as I was always a bit paranoid about losing it), and it had no problems counting steps. I adjusted it on the app for my stride length and then calibrated it against MapMyWalk for distance so I know it was counting properly.

Try restarting it by taking the battery out and waiting 10 seconds before putting it back in.

lhastingsmua · 10/06/2018 19:05

I do over 10K steps on Monday to Friday and that’s just walking throughout the day ie travelling to and from work, going to get lunch/dinner/shops etc. IE not through walking through a park for a while or having a jog, just throughout my standard day. So something is off with yours

Do you have the Fitbit app on your phone? If so, how many steps does the app say you have done? If you have an iPhone, the Health app automatically notes down the steps you have taken too, so you can check there also

rookiemere · 10/06/2018 19:11

I average about 1000 steps in 10 mins.

Buteo · 10/06/2018 19:13

Although when I’m at work I’m on my feet and walking around for 6 hours and it’s generally only around 10,000 steps.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 10/06/2018 19:20

I agree with everyone else - the tube station is about 10 minutes away at a solid pace and my iPhone and DH’s android both count that as about 1,000 steps. So if your base level at work and home is about 3,000 you need to find just over an hour to do additional exercise.

DrWhy · 10/06/2018 19:28

Sorry to break the bad news OP but the day I spent at a wildlife park with my toddler a couple of months ago I only clocked up 12,400 steps and I think we walked to a restaurant in the evening for dinner too. I was on my feet all day and thought I’d been moving constantly but apparently not!
I usually get 6000 or so on a totally lazy office day and 8-9000 if I’ve rushed about a bit at work and done a load of chore in the evening. I’ve spent today taking my toddler swimming then at a family fun day, outside from 12-5 and still only 8200 steps. You really have to be actually walking consistently to get decent numbers of steps, either to get somewhere or out for a purposeful walk.

Eanair · 10/06/2018 19:31

I used to wear my Fitbit on my bra and it worked fine until I got a new and better fitting bra which meant less boob-joggling, so less movement for the Fitbit to detect. If I'm wearing that bra now, I need to make sure my Fitbit is either on my bra-strap or in my pocket.

PositivelyPERF · 10/06/2018 19:33

If you’re going to keep it in your bra, maybe you should try trampoline class instead! 😁

do not look for funny bouncing boobs. My eyes need bleached 😲

PickAChew · 10/06/2018 19:35

You definitely need to try it in different positions.

Today I've shuffled around a plant nursery, taken ds2 for a wander around town where he had to stop and sit on every bench we passed and pottered around the kitchen and that has come to over 8000 steps.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 10/06/2018 19:36

Download a free app OP as that’s doesn’t sound right

10,000 is covered by 1.5 hours of brisk walk this end

MismatchedPJs · 10/06/2018 19:47

They do vary loads. Try moving it away from your midline.

Probably not the same problem as here but we've had a really low stepcount at a theme park despite hours on our feet. We put it down to lots of stop-starting when queuing.

Lilyhatesjaz · 10/06/2018 20:04

I wear my, zip on the wait band of my trousers on the side and it seems quite accurate

thecatsthecats · 10/06/2018 20:07

I agree that you'll have definitely done at least 10000, but also that you probably won't have come close to 6k an hour at a safari - I walk to work at that pace, and you'd barely see a single lemur striding about like that!

When we do days out and city breaks, I tend to do 25k max in six hours, because of photos, looking at things etc.

BlossomRain · 10/06/2018 20:20

Ok I’m going to wear it on my waist tomorrow, a working day but I know the average when worn on my bra to compare.
I really didn’t stop much while walking yesterday, ds kept running off so I didn’t really see much of the animals tbh so I’m thinking it wasn’t accurate. Put it this way my legs were aching when I got home and I fell asleep on the sofa VERY unlike me so I was properly knackered

OP posts:
patientzero · 10/06/2018 20:23

I would return it and try another device as that isn’t right at all

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 10/06/2018 20:29

I had a Zip and got rid of it as it wasn't at all accurate. If you wear it on your bra it's really not going to count all your steps as it's not going to sense as much movement compared to arms or legs/hips (even though it says you can wear it there). I got an Alta instead and it's so much better.

Marmalady75 · 10/06/2018 20:45

I pop mine in my back pocket when pushing the buggy or shopping trolley because it picks up every step that way.
Others ways I hit my target

  • a 10-15 minute walk at lunchtime
  • when I check it I jog/March on the spot to make it up to the next 100
  • dance/jog in the spot when cooking dinner or washing up
  • march/jog on the spot for 50 steps when I go to the loo
  • park at the far end of the car park from the supermarket then walk up and down every aisle
ClashCityRocker · 10/06/2018 20:52

Yeah, something's deffo off. I have seven thousand and something steps from an hour and a quarter-ish walk today.

wheezing · 10/06/2018 21:03

I don’t know how people get 10k from not leaving the house. On a not leaving the house day I struggle to get 2k.
10k for me is getting to and from work (public transport for commute so walking to station and from stations etc) as well as a big walk at lunchtime or popping out (walking) to the shops in the evening. I can’t hit it just from going to work.

If you were genuinely walking for 6 hours you should be at 10k though.
