To wonder how on Earth I can manage 10,000 steps

I have a fit bit zip that I wear on my body. Yesterday I walked for 6 hours solid as well as pottering before and after, I managed just over 11000 steps. I want to do the 1 million steps challenge from July to September for diabetes uk but I work a desk job and generally average 3,000 steps a day how on Earth will I hit my target of 11,000 steps a day on a normal day?! I DO have a very long stride not sure if this is a factor

I have a wrist pedometer that I cannot wear at work (NHS infection control)
On a non work day , I'll get 11-14k
I've tried putting it in my pocket , it clocks up 600 steps Hmm

On the treadmill it doesn't register because I don;t swing my arms (I hold onto the sides grimly)

gamerchick · 10/06/2018 17:16

It takes an hour and a half constant walking to do 10,000 steps OP, I do it first thing to get them out of the way usually. I would use another type of fitness tracker if I was you

Can you not try attaching it to your bra instead?

PuppyMonkey · 10/06/2018 17:16

I have stayed in today apart from an hour going to supermarket and I’ve done 3357.

Toooldtobearsed · 10/06/2018 17:16

For me, 60 minutes equals 6000 steps.

I know, for sure, because I walk the dogs for what I thought was 2 hours an hour and a half in the morning, followed by a 60 minute walk, and a short stroll in the evening.

9000 ish for the first walk
6000 for next one
2000 for optional

Tbh, i am suprised if i d9nt hit 18000 step a day

BlossomRain · 10/06/2018 17:17

No buggy, no stopping for breaks. Briefly stopping to look at things but running after my 6 year old so not exactly standing still. I wear in on my bra, between the cups. Perhaps it’s not accurate, I hope so! I used to use my iPhone but don’t always have it on me, charging etc so bought the Fitbit

Doesn’t sound right. I would try wearing it in different places and see if you get different results. Do the instructions give any guidance on where to wear it?

ChanklyBore · 10/06/2018 17:19

I haven’t left the house today and I have 9.8k on my wrist Fitbit.

SilverHairedCat · 10/06/2018 17:20

Lots of people reporting similar issues, which appear to be down to placement:

BonnieF · 10/06/2018 17:20

That definitely sounds wrong.

My last 6 days, according to the Steps app on my iPhone. I’m 1.83m :

Mon 9.8k steps, 7.4 km, 1h40 min.
Tue 13.5k steps, 9.1km, 2h09mins
Wed 12.6k steps, 8.3km, 2h01mins
Thu 8.5k steps, 5.8km, 1h26mins
Fri 13k steps, 8.8km, 2h07mins
Sat 13k steps, 8.7km, 2h17mins.

Hope that’s of some use.

Depends on how you walk. Almost certainly the Fitbit isn't detecting steps accurately.
It's not that easy to be certain of steps, but accelerometers in the device try to interpret certain movements as a step, or a climb etc.

Why not do a little test and actually count 500 steps (go for a little walk to the shop or something) and then see how accurate your Fitbit is/was.

DragonMummy1418 · 10/06/2018 17:21

Definitely not going to work accurately in your bra - try your ankle!

itsBritneyBeach · 10/06/2018 17:22

I did a charity walk of 25 miles, 8am to 8pm and that was 55,000 steps. Your counter is dodgy!

Gymntonic · 10/06/2018 17:22

More of a titbit then😂
Put it on your wrist.

Toooldtobearsed · 10/06/2018 17:22

From reading everyone else, it seems that my guesstimate of 6000 = 60 mins is roughly correct. Your fitbit sounds like a meanie op😁

adaline · 10/06/2018 17:22

You need to wear it on your wrist or on your ankle.

maggiso · 10/06/2018 17:24

Could your device need recharging? I am 3 days in with my new withings pulse ox and yesterday it just stopped at 356 steps ( despite walking several miles) No warning that it needed a recharge. Still all other functions working, and phone saying ( by evening) it had 16% charge. Today after a recharge it’s counting again. Do these things put themselves into a power saving mode perhaps?

BlossomRain · 10/06/2018 17:24

Lol at titbit the zip was advertised to be worn on the bra I didn’t just invent that 😂 maybe I’ll try in my pocket or something, cost me 50 bloody quid that thing!

JennyOnAPlate · 10/06/2018 17:25

Clip it to your waist and or pocket and see if it's more accurate. I do approx 6000 steps in an hour so there's no way yours is accurate.

thelastredwinegum · 10/06/2018 17:26

In the app settings have you put the placement of it, also not sure if it makes any difference on the Zip but on my Charge height& stride length should be added to your profile too.

If you think it might be faulty I've found Fitbit customer support to be pretty good.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2018 17:27

That doesn't sound right. 6 hours straight would be a lot.

DragonMummy1418 · 10/06/2018 17:28

Try clipping it to your sock or your pocket. It's more likely to register the movement. 👍🏻

EC22 · 10/06/2018 17:29

It takes me 1 hour and 40 mins to hit 10000 steps. Constant walking that is.

Buglife · 10/06/2018 17:32

It’s very easy to do 10,000 steps, I know as I’ve been trying to avoid walking far (late pregnancy, SPD) and yet by doing the very short school run and a couple of trips to the shops I seem to be doing at least 9000 a day, I’m trying to keep it under 5000 as I don’t get so much pain that way. It must be the Fitbit, don’t worry, it’s much easier than you think to do 10,000!

hopelessandhopeful · 10/06/2018 17:39

By 6 hours solid I mean no break, we were at a safari park and didn’t stop the whole time, I was devestated when I seen the results on the fit bit. I’ve only just bought it so it shouldn’t be faulty

Something new can be just as faulty. Hence why people return products daily.

Loonoon · 10/06/2018 17:41

I have very short legs and 2500 steps is a mile for me (give or take). It takes about 20 minutesdepending on conditions. My understanding is that the wrist worn Fitbits register a step when you swing your arm upwards so if your one is similar wearing between your boobs is not going to give anything like an accurate reading. Could you clip it to your sleeve instead?
