To wonder how on Earth I can manage 10,000 steps

I have a fit bit zip that I wear on my body. Yesterday I walked for 6 hours solid as well as pottering before and after, I managed just over 11000 steps. I want to do the 1 million steps challenge from July to September for diabetes uk but I work a desk job and generally average 3,000 steps a day how on Earth will I hit my target of 11,000 steps a day on a normal day?! I DO have a very long stride not sure if this is a factor

Yeah that does sound way off

I work a desk job at home but have a dog so walk regularly. On an average day I walk to school then walk for 45 mins ish with the dog after, an hours walk early afternoon and another hour or so later on.... average between 10k and 12k usually.

Weekends and days off when I go running or take the dog further I usually hit over 20k steps so I'd say something's wrong with your Fitbit

LBOCS2 · 10/06/2018 21:10

I can and regularly do do 8000ish steps in a day when I only potter around the house and do the school run (school is 9 doors away). On that basis, I think your Fitbit might be faulty...

FritataPatate · 10/06/2018 21:16

Try picking up the pace, maybe? Strolling round a safari park, stopping to look at animals etc I can see that you wouldn't cover that many steps.

I’m a short legged fattie and I’ve worked out that an average mile for me is 2300 steps. If I’m walking fast, I can do 3.5 miles in an hour so I try and do at least an hour of proper walking for exercise every day and that, together with my general pottering around the office means I hit my target of 10k. If I’ve done a longer walk or two walks I can get to 15k + which is a good day for me.

I went to a wedding on Saturday so didn’t do much walking but by the time I went to bed I’d clocked up nearly 14k which was mostly from dancing!

My Fitbit tells me that my 36 minute walk into town this morning equalled 3700 steps so I agree your Fitbit might be faulty. I do notice however, round the house, that general housework, racks up surprisingly few steps whereas, out in the garden, mowing the lawn and hoeing gives me lots of steps. If I’m not going out one day, I can still reach 10, 000 fairly easily with 15 minute bursts of dancing to Kerrang or MT V rock. I’ve also got a 45 min fitness/dance dvd called ‘dance that walk’ which gives me about 5000 steps. I’ve got some 2 kg weights that I use at the same time to build in some upper body muscle strength.
Last summer when I was exercising more regularly and had cut out sugary carbs, my resting heartbeat, according to my Charge2, was down at 63 bpm. As I’ve let my exercising and good eating habits deteriorate it has slowly crept up to 75. A few days back on the wagon and it starts to lower again although only to 70 this year as I have regularly been falling off then getting back on the wagon over the last 6 months. It is scarily easy and effective to turn your health around with diet and exercise so why do I keep sabotaging myself?

Needs to be on your wrist or ankle.

Littlepleasures · 11/06/2018 16:54

Another way I reach my 10000 at home is to keep my stepper near our toilet and do 2 mins worth every time I go to the loo.

Gretol · 11/06/2018 16:59

May I respectfully suggest that steps spent pootling round a safari park arent going to be that good for your health a fitness. You need at least 30 mins of proper brisk walking. I walk the dogs twice a day for about 40 mins each, that and my normal day gets me to around 9000 steps

9amTrain · 11/06/2018 17:08

6 hours should have gotten you over 20,000 steps. I hit 11,000 after an hour and a half of walking today.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 11/06/2018 17:16

In my experience a marathon is 60k steps, half marathon just under 30k.

I've walked 1.5 miles each way to work and back and that's about 6k steps.

It's little things that add up OP - walking to the shop instead of taking the car. Climbing stairs instead of going in the lift. A quick 15 stroll after tea is 1500 steps!

mussie · 11/06/2018 20:21

@BlossomRain how did the wearing it on your waist experiment go?

Oldraver · 11/06/2018 20:33

I have just a cheapie steps meter and the first dya I use it was astonished that I did nearly 30,00 steps...and averaged about 25-30,00 each day. Lots of walking but also lots of arm movement.

New job..constant walking marching, lots more than old job in half the time. But half the time carrying trays so no arm movement..I did a measly 19,000

itstimeforanamechange · 12/06/2018 08:19

On a working from home day I don't usually get more than about 5000, it will be closer to 8000 if I go to the shops. On a working in the office day I get to around 10,000 if I don't do anything else, but I cycle to and from the station at my end and get a bit of credit for that, not sure how many steps I get for cycling but the step count does go up. If I walk to the station I get closer to 15,000.

When I was on holiday a couple of weeks ago I did 30,000 in one day and just under 140,000 for the week which was my highest ever. Going on holiday is the way to get the step count up. We need to give everyone 50 days' leave rather than 25 :)

I did 90,000 steps last week which included some running. When I run I cover around 1000 steps per km.

BlossomRain · 12/06/2018 17:30

@mussie I wore it on my waist yesterday and today so I know a general work day is around 3000. I need to drive to and from work (school run) and work in a tiny office so not much movement. I usually work through lunch but I’m going to try and add in a short walk during lunch and then an evening walk. I currently a size 12 but would love to get back to a 10 so I think more movement is definitely needed.

@Oldraver do you think that could have been correct? I’ve been wearing a FitBit (and equivalent) for years and 20k is a lot of walking around - for me it’s a busy day plus a good gym (treadmill) session.
I think I managed 22k by walking around Central Park for a day, it was pretty exhausting, and I barely stopped.

Slipp3rs · 12/06/2018 19:16

It’s not broken - I was at a theme park on Saturday and I only did around 9,000 steps. I was shocked as I thought I’d have done more. And I was exhausted,

On a normal day doing school runs and cleaning the house I do around 11000.

I find things like cooking and cleaning push your steps up.
