This holiday situation

I'm posting this on behalf of a family member as she wanted opinions on this situation. Two friends book a holiday (for the sake of this thread i will call them jane and Lisa) they agree that they will pay off £250 a month so that the holiday is paid off in time. Lisa keeps up with the payments but jane doesnt. lisa starts to worry and speaks to jane about it jane says she will pay it after christmas, which turns into after easter and basically keeps making excuses. Anyway 2 days before the holiday is due to be paid off Jane says she needs and extension and asks Lisa to call the holiday company (which she does and they agree to a 2 week extension.) Jane insists she wll be able to pay it off in the 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks Jane says she cant get the money and says she will get a pay day loan. She doesnt get one in the end and asks Lisa if she will loan her the money. lisa doesnt as she cant afford it, shee then asks Lisa if she has anyone who can take the place. With it being such short notice Lisa struggles to find someone but eventually does 48 hours before the deadline. Lisa tells the other friend she can have the holiday and pay off the reminder and just pay for a name change. Lisa tells Jane and Jane says she wants the other friend to pay her the money back which she had paid towards the holiday. Lisa tells Jane she has 3 options, which are she either comes on the holiday herself and finds a way to pay the remaining money, pays back the money Lisa will lose from the cancellation fees or accepts she will lose the money she had paid so far. Jane says she wants the money back in installments but the other friend has already said she wont be able to pay anymore than the out standing balance. so jane asks for it back in instalments. But the other friend is unwilling and is only able to accept the holiday at the out standing amount. Jane then says just do what you want and hasnt spoken to Lisa since. What are your opinions and who is wrong in this situation?

Nope. no fucking idea.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 10/06/2018 15:51

I can't even follow it, sorry, did try!

rjay123 · 10/06/2018 15:51

It’s not a case of “don’t want to” - It’s fucking impossible

ReservoirDogs · 10/06/2018 15:51

Jane is being a dick!

If Lisa hadn't found the replacement Jane would have lost her money anyway and caused Lisa to go alone or lose her money if the company would have cancelled both places.

Jane is in the same situation as she would have been in and suck it up!

I do hope OP is Lisa!

Battleax · 10/06/2018 15:51

my phone is shit if you dont want to read it then dont!

Fine, just trying to help 🤷🏻‍♀️

ReservoirDogs · 10/06/2018 15:52

Of course it is possible to read it. Op has written in full sentences.

IsDaveThere · 10/06/2018 15:52

Jane is in the wrong for not paying for the holiday but i don't think she should lose all the money she has paid so far if someone else has been found to take her place.

Sounds like a bloody expensive holiday, how much was it each and how much has Jane paid/got left outstanding?

FuzzyCustard · 10/06/2018 15:52

Friend C should pay the whole holiday amount (including the amount already paid by Jane, returned to Jane), Jane should pay the name change fee, Lisa should know better than to ask Jane for anything ever again.

I think.

ScreamingValenta · 10/06/2018 15:52

Jane is in the wrong.

It would be unreasonable to expect the person taking up the holiday at short notice to pay the full price for a holiday that was not of their choosing.

If Jane does not pay, you both lose your holiday anyway. The solution you've found seems the best compromise, unless Jane can find the money.

icelollycraving · 10/06/2018 15:52

I did try. I got a bit lost,sorry.

Whocansay · 10/06/2018 15:53

Jane is a silly bitch. Lisa should ignore her and have a lovely time with her other friend.

Jane created this problem. Stuff her.

werideatdawn · 10/06/2018 15:53

Struggled with that wall of text to be honest. I can't make sense of it all.

iloveredwine · 10/06/2018 15:53

How much has Jane paid?

Jane's in the wrong. Would she get any money back if the holiday was cancelled?

ShotsFired · 10/06/2018 15:54

So your relative is Lisa and has paid everything for her half.

The friend Jane hasn't been able to stump up.

Lisa has "sold" Jane's half to Bob for the final payments + name change fees.

Jane now wants Bob to pay 100% so she can have her money back?

Jane needs to grow up. She had the choice of going on the holiday and should have budgeted accordingly. If Bob hadn't stepped in, she'd be liable for the remaining payment anyway so Bob has saved her some cash.

Clionba · 10/06/2018 15:55

Jane shouldn't lose all the money she's paid thus far. The third person should pay Jane all the money except any fees for name change etc.

PurpleDaisies · 10/06/2018 15:55

Your op is perfectly readable. I don’t know what the other posters are moaning about.

Lisa was out of order to offer the holiday to the new friend for the outstanding balance, not the full cost of the holiday.

FesteringCarbuncle · 10/06/2018 15:56

Jane loses the money she has already paid
Hard luck. She didn't keep to her side of the bargain and would have lost the money anyway

Battleax · 10/06/2018 15:56

Wow. Jane’s a couple complete flake isn’t she?

Peterrabbitscarrots · 10/06/2018 15:56

Jane would have lost the money anyway, so she doesn’t technically deserve to get it back. But if I were the person taking her place, I’d pay at least some of Jane’s deposit back - maybe 50% if I couldnt afford all of it.

None of this is Lisa’s fault, and it shouldn’t be her problem to act as referee here

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 10/06/2018 15:57

Baffled as to why some posters can't make sense of it!

I don't know who's in the wrong though OP. Of course Jane would want her money back if she isn't going any more but what would have happened if Lisa hadn't found someone to take her place? I'm guessing Jane would have lost the money any way?

Jaxhog · 10/06/2018 15:58

If Lisa lends Jane the money, she won't get it back. Even if she had it to lend.

If I were Lisa, I'd go with the new person. Unless Jane can stop her doing this. But Jane is going to lose her deposit either way. If Jane doesn't agree, she may then become liable for more or even the whole cost of the holiday depending on the cancellation clauses.
