...to ask for your help in locating a village in Surrey/Sussex I once drove through?

This is a bit bonkers but I’ve seen the amazing things Mumsnetters can do so here you go...

About 5 years ago DH and I went to a wedding in Arundel and on the drive from Wimbledon area to Sussex, we passed through about 3 GORGEOUS villages. They had lovely village greens, rustic pubs, chocolate box cottages etc.

My DH and I are getting a night free of children soon and I would love to book a night in a nice inn in one of these villages.

Is there anyway you can help me work out which villages these might have been?

I wasn’t a driver then so I paid no attention to the route so can’t accurately retrace the journey looking on a map.

5 YEARS I’ve been thinking about these villages!! Blush

Merryoldgoat · 08/06/2018 12:04

They’re gorgeous @Nestofvipers

I’m going to bet it was Chiddingford but I’ll look at places in the first three.

Thank you so much Smile

Cowfold doesn't sound like your description. Petworth does though?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 08/06/2018 12:26

Shere is definitely chocolate box pretty... there's also a village near Leith Hill which sounds similar.

JosephineBucket · 08/06/2018 12:28

How close to Arundel? I was going to suggest Midhurst but can't see how the route from London would go through it. I used to always go through Petworth driving back South so that's a possibility.

letsdolunch321 · 08/06/2018 12:29

All lovely places I moved from Wimbledon to the green leafy area of West Sussex. Love, love, love it

Xiaoxiong · 08/06/2018 12:29

I'm guessing you drove down the A283 and went through places like Hambledon, Witley and Petworth? Did you go past Guildford first?

ThePants999 · 08/06/2018 12:33

I drove through Cowfold t'other day and nothing other than the name was memorable.

JosephineBucket · 08/06/2018 12:34

Just realised both Petworth and Midhurst are on A 272 so you could have gone through both if you went that route. Been a while since I drove that way.

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 08/06/2018 12:35

Lurgashall? Though you would have had to be taking a very off-track route to go through it!

3SteaksPam · 08/06/2018 12:37

Slindon? Mannings Heath? Amberly? Storrigton? Henfield? Steyning? Petworth?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 08/06/2018 12:38

Alfriston? Beautiful village, very quaint.

Xiaoxiong · 08/06/2018 12:38

Love everyone saying Petworth (including me). It's going to be the new cancel the cheque Grin

Xiaoxiong · 08/06/2018 12:39

So just to help you out OP Wink discoverpetworth.uk/stay

3SteaksPam · 08/06/2018 12:39

Really sounds like petworth to me but could be midhurst, Petersfield

3SteaksPam · 08/06/2018 12:40

Halneker, Goodwood

Sorry there my guesses

maxthemartian · 08/06/2018 12:42

Alfriston probably too far East but yes very lovely!
OP did it have a castle with a very large encircling wall? Not Arundel as obviously that does Smile. But the place you drive through.

lanbury · 08/06/2018 12:43

If you came down the A29 to Arundel, look up Ockley but I bet Amberley (very chocolate box and close to Arundel!)

Clubcuts · 08/06/2018 12:43

Wisborough Green?
