To think a lot of left wing people are actually close minded?

DeepFatFriar · 07/06/2018 18:10

Close minded as in not receptive to other peoples views.

Disclaimer: i consider myself left wing.

But at the same time, I'm quite happy to have a talk with someone down the pub who might be anti immigration or anti abortion. As long as they've thought their point out properly, im open to debate and i dont feell offended by their views.
But it feels like a lot of the left wing people i come across just go into "racist twat! Fucking tory!" mode- like theyre incapable of seeing that situations are often a bit more complex than just this is right/thats wrong.

For example with Brexit, i voted remain and was gutted by the result - at the same time, i felt a bit irritated by fellow remainers "theyre all little englander tory twats" attitude to brexiters. Yeah, some of them are. Others just have a different POV, you know?

I was discussing this with my mum and she said back in her day (im assuming this means the 70s!) "conversation felt more nuanced".

It sometimes feels like a lot of left wing people just want to live in an echo chamber. I think you need to try and keep an open mind to different points of view. You clearly dont have to agree. But you can at least accept that people have different mindsets because they've had different experiences - it doesnt make them a worse person though.

"I think there is nastiness and massive generalisations on all sides of the political debate, left, right and centre"
Agreed. The Right is certainly showing it's Nasty Party side on this thread....

commonarewe · 10/06/2018 15:54

So hang on- the authoritarian Left was responsible for Brexit-even though Labour hasn't been in power since 2010? How do you make that out

The authoritarian left dominates the media, academia, and large swathes of politics and popular culture. Sadly, it doesn't vanish in a puff of smoke when Labour gets kicked out of power.

ohgohome · 10/06/2018 16:07

BertrandRussell Is that what it is? I don’t know, I’m not from the U.K.

IrmaFayLear · 10/06/2018 16:16

Kids are continually indoctrinated at school. Anyone would think that we were all direct descendents of slave traders and personally guilty of every Empire wrongdoing. In fact some of the pupils in dd’s class were getting the impression that we (ie Britain) were the wrongdoers in the Vietnam War. I suppose they are so used to us being labelled the “baddies”.

Most people in this country were living very tough lives until quite recently. My grandfather was unemployed in the 1930s with six children. Dh’s grandfather and two uncles died in WWII (drowned in torpedoed boats). But somehow this history has morphed into us all having lived some kind of charmed existence for which we should feel a collective national guilt.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/06/2018 16:16

Well, what a pleasant lot on the right. Now they've got it off their chest for another week can we just give it a break? The right as open minded, my arse.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/06/2018 16:18

What indoctrination are you on about, Irma? My three kids didn't come home with any historical guilt. Are you under the impression this is in the curriculum? What a load of tosh.

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 16:25

"Kids are continually indoctrinated at school. Anyone would think that we were all direct descendents of slave traders and personally guilty of every Empire wrongdoing. "

Ah, right. We're making stuff up now are we?

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 16:43

And it’s fascinating how the right always conveniently forget about the EDL, Britain First, UKIP.....,......

commonarewe · 10/06/2018 17:13

As opposed to the other way round where you get attacked as a snowflake, libtard, terrorist sympathiser you mean?

Well, if the cap fits...

pointythings · 10/06/2018 17:14

Irma I have one DD doing A-level history and one doing the new GCSE history and I don't recognise the picture you are painting at all. But the 'lefty teacher' trope is so convenient to use in a lazy argument signalling the virtue of the right...

I respect people with opinions different from mine. I have friends across the entirety of the political spectrum. They are friends because they take a reasoned position, and because life isn't black and white - we all recognise that. I do not respect the 'lefties are all intolerant' crowd that has come to post on this thread. Anyone who says 'the left is' or 'the right is' or even 'this political/religious/societal group is' has instantly lost the argument.

pointythings · 10/06/2018 17:15

Also I had to laugh out loud at the poster who said the media in the UK is controlled by the left. The Mail, the Sun, the Express, the BBC even - they are the ones in control, the ones making policy and yes, the ones with the big circulation. Clearly being very right wing in the media gets you power.

frumpety · 10/06/2018 17:17

This thread is gold ! the Left are responsible for Brexit and Trump ? Star for effort !

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 17:24

Not sure the right have done themselves any favours on this thread, to be honest!

surferjet · 10/06/2018 17:31

The extreme left & the extreme right attract exactly the same type of person. ( not very nice people )
The extreme right blame everything on immigrants, & the left love everyone except white men.

frumpety · 10/06/2018 17:44

I don't think that's quite fair Surfer , I love my white man Wink

frumpety · 10/06/2018 17:45

Most of the time Grin

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 17:48

Ah yes. White men. The most persecuted minority on the planet!

surferjet · 10/06/2018 17:53

frumpety Grin

LadyWithLapdog · 10/06/2018 18:01

Surferjet - spell it out for me, who constitutes the extreme left if they hate the white man? What ethnicity are we talking here? Or is it all women? Or white men with self-loathing? What are you on about?!

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 18:10

I know this one! It’s all the white men who “can’t say anything any more” who are being passed over for jobs because quotas, who are being denied access to their children by the feminazi family courts........

Justanotherlurker · 10/06/2018 18:13

Also I had to laugh out loud at the poster who said the media in the UK is controlled by the left.

The print media is increasingly irrelevant and a strawman in most arguments made "generally" by the "left", the BBC are a government mouthpiece and we have NuLabour to thank for that, the current shit show continuing to threaten the withhold of funding is just a continuation which most people recognise is not a right wing issue.

We have currently experienced a paradoxical situation where up until Brexit/Trump and before that, the Cons winning the GE, online was considered very left leaning "more enlightened" liberals, since then the finger has pointed to outside sources ie "muh Russians" and yet conveniently ignore that the admittedly true scenario of Russia wanting to destabilise everyone, actually was involved in a lot of the pro Corbyn online presence.

We have people on this thread trying to extrapolate daily mail/express/sun comments as representative of the "right", whilst ignoring that such comments have been rightly ridiculed across the political spectrum for over a decade, even more ironically ignoring the many shit show comments on sites such as twitter that openly left leaning people are calling people uncle tom's because they do not vote the correct way.

We have the "vocal" left suddenly being torn in a situation where they try and make brexit a left/right issue by openly supporting neoliberalism and big multinational businesses in favour of the "thick, uneducated, easily swayed by propaganda" labour heartlands, funnily enough those same "thick, uneducated" are somehow not considered that when it comes round to GE.

Justanotherlurker · 10/06/2018 18:30

I know this one! It’s all the white men who “can’t say anything any more” who are being passed over for jobs because quotas, who are being denied access to their children by the feminazi family courts........

And yet your flippant remark is actually bearing fruit in many sectors, such as the rise of the alt-right or Jordan Peterson idols, plus education is already aware of it:

www.theguardian.com/education/2018/may/10/white-working-class-boys-in-england-need-more-help-to-go-to-university

You're also ignoring that Brexit is slanted as being the uneducated white man (or the apparently non race related "Gammon" slur) as being responsible.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/06/2018 19:22

Justanotherlurker - take a deep breath and start again. You're all over the place there and make no sense.

Justanotherlurker · 10/06/2018 19:33

take a deep breath and start again

I just rant in a dyslexic fashion, what would you like clarifying?

lindalee3 · 10/06/2018 19:45

Congratulations - and thank you - to the (few) far left on here (especially @BertrandRussell and @Ladywithlapdog ) for proving my point about you.

The posts you 'lefties' have posted over the last couple of pages illustrate exactly what me and a number of other posters have been saying about the far left. You have shown yourselves up to be exactly what we have all been saying about you.
