Simon Mayo Drivetime - Latest

Like many people, I've signed the petitions and complained to the BBC about the changes to the Simon Mayo Drivetime programme...or rather the complete decimation of it.

In the end, I wrote to Whistledown...the people who make the Radio 4 Feedback programme. They are the only ones to respond and they has said that the recent changes will be covered in their programme on Friday 15th. They want me to read out some of my complaint which of course I'm more than happy to do Grin.

So if you've given Jo Whiley and Simon Mayo Show time to 'settle in' (the BBC's words not mine) and still want the Drivetime show and team back, now may be the time to write to the Radio 4 Feedback programme. The links are:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006slnx/contact
or
[email protected]

Please spread the word and see if we can get the Drivetime team back where they belong Smile

Yy to Sarah cox she’s easily the best in the morning
Don’t get rid of ken Bruce -he’s great and so effortlessly witty

The reason jo Wiley was brought In was to add a female voice to an otherwise all male weekday on R2

I fear she’s going nowhere

gruffalosarse · 21/06/2018 21:17

I've stopped listening to the show, cannot bear how unnatural both sound. And the music is crap now.

sluj · 08/08/2018 20:58

Just wondering whether anyone has grown to love this programme now we have given it time to "bed in" as instructed?

I don't listen to it anymore apart from 10 minutes on Fridays for the request show. I'm not even enjoying that to be honest. Will the BBC think it's ok as we have given up protesting?

Me and Radio 2 have pretty much finished

Hisnamesblaine · 08/08/2018 23:09

I only time in for Ken Bruce...'ll more specifically Pop master. Driving home from the zoo today and it was jo with another fella? Certainly not Simon? Didn't know who he was. But it was awful

TheMadGardener · 08/08/2018 23:28

I miss Drivetime. It was like listening to friends every night on the way home. The only weekday Radio 2 programme I listen to now is Ken Bruce. Apart from that I'm with 5 Live, and Radio 4 for The Archers and Dead Ringers.

Domino20 · 08/08/2018 23:39

My heart drops every time I'm stuck in my car for the duration of the new show. There's no chemistry between them at all and JW has no charisma, her talking to callers is cringe worthy. Last Wednesday she was teamed up with Ricky Wilson from Kaiser Chiefs, it was FUCKING AWFUL. CAN YOU HEAR ME RADIO 2.

IAmTheWifeOfMaoTseTung · 08/08/2018 23:52

IPlayer Radio is your friend. Cerys, Iggy and Lauren Laverne are a good start.

Littlegreyauditor · 08/08/2018 23:54

I have regressed entirely since they ruined Simon Mayo’s show and am listening to Harry Potter audiobooks, mixed with playlists of REM’s entire back catalogue, Jonathan Van Ness’s brilliant podcast, Wittertainment and sometimes the Moana soundtrack (against my will).
In the house I can get DAB so listen to 6Music.

I’m right in the middle of their supposed demographic but I will not listen to drivetime now, can’t listen to Chris Evans yelling in the morning and therefore do not listen to R2 at all any more. Angry

HollowTalk · 08/08/2018 23:57

I don't listen to R2 now, either. I used to listen to Jonathon Ross every Saturday morning and loved - really loved - Johnnie Walker at Drivetime every day. I'd even listen to Wogan, ffs! I liked Simon Mayo before, but can't stand it now. It seems very stilted.

HollowTalk · 08/08/2018 23:58

And Chris Evans is awful. It's like listening to some really hyperactive guy - not what you need in the morning.

Naveloranges · 09/08/2018 00:44

I can’t bear to listen to Simon Mayo, Jo Whiley, Nihal A, Steve Wright, I just switch off at the merest hint of any of them.

actualpuffins · 09/08/2018 02:03

I don't like Jo Whiley's presenting style generally and try to avoid her generally. But the other day she turned up on a gardening programme, FFS. It was like watching a fish ride a bicycle.

BlueUggs · 09/08/2018 02:17

I hate Ricky Wilson!!! He makes my skin crawl! So rude, constantly offensive. I want to rip my ears off!!

Tartyflette · 09/08/2018 02:40

He's been in with JW for about a week now (where's Simon?) and was making horrible innuendo-laden remarks today about his 'little Ricky' and an onstage wardrobe malfunction. Yeeuch.
I don't know why JW is still on, she's not good at all for this format and the show is terrible.
Steve Wright is well past his sell-by date, he's almost a caricature of a DJ, à la Smashie and Nicey - I cannot bear the man at all, he too talks and sings (No. Just no) over the records.

creepingbuttercupdrivesmemad · 09/08/2018 04:30

I really want to like R2, but find all their daytime stuff so banal now. Steve Wright is beyond awful, and I can't stand Jo Whiley in any capacity actualpuffins, yes, I saw her on the gardening programme! Stick to pretentious music waffle and leave the dahlias alone you irritating woman

My last remaining pleasure was Jeremy Vine, but the ridiculous topics that are debated have finally finished me off now. It's now permanent R4 all day.

ShackUp · 09/08/2018 04:30

Ricky Wilson is thick as shit. He made a comment on a stand-in slot once that 'Johnny Marr' sounded like it could be French for something or other. Yes, Ricky, people have been pointing out 'j'en ai marre' since 1983, mate.

DopeyDazy · 09/08/2018 05:45

luckily have had a DAB fitted in car and can get loads of other stations so dont have to listen to that crap any more. Also great for local radio such as useful traffic info yesterday when a bridge was damaged in Northampton and it was gridlocked

snowsun · 09/08/2018 06:40

How is Chris Evans one of the highest earners in the BBC ?
What is their target audience ?
I'm in my 50s and I find there is too much old music , that wasn't even that good at the time , played. I keep trying to listen to it but it is all just awful.

FrazzledRockRed · 09/08/2018 06:44

Done

sunsalutations · 09/08/2018 06:54

Alan and Mel summer sounds on Saturday mornings is great! Now that pair work well together. Put them in the Drivetime slot Grin

sunsalutations · 09/08/2018 06:58

On the other hand, I like Chris Evans but he has started recently really talking over the songs and it drives me nuts. I shout shut up at the radio when he does that, he took a whole verse off one of my favourite The Jam songs the other day

Dragonfree · 09/08/2018 07:06

Can't stand the new show. I find Jo annoying, boring and unnatural.

And their new segment on the "on tour" thing.... Omg! I'm assuming they're actually asking listeners to send in their terrible, unfunny, embarrassing stories...

I'm now also stuck with the local radios. I wish I had DAB....

peachgreen · 09/08/2018 07:09

I'm on maternity leave and listen to a lot of R2. I absolutely love Sara Cox, I think she's just brilliant. Couldn't imagine the morning without Ken Bruce. Can't stand Jeremy Vine, they talk such nonsense. It's a bit better when Vanessa Feltz is on but in general I'm not a fan of the "let racists on the air" format. Steve Wright is an institution and I personally think his show works despite him being a bit annoying (and I have a secret love for serious jockin' (no g)). I liked the Drivetime show quite a lot but agree that it doesn't work with Jo Whiley - when it was first announced and there was outrage I was determined to like it because a lot of the hate felt misogynistic in tone, but it genuinely is awful and she sounds like she's hating every minute herself tbh - not her demographic at all.

ANYWAY I mainly came on to be outraged that anyone had slagged off the Sunday line-up because Love Songs - Michael Ball - Elaine Paige is PERFECTION. Wish they'd replace Paul O'Grady with Alan and Mel though.

Andtheresaw · 09/08/2018 07:13

Petitions? Seriously? Just turn over; there are 100s of alternatives!

Pappybear · 09/08/2018 07:21

Nihal is the absolute pits. It all went tits up when shelagh forgery and Victoria Derbyshire left.

There's another awful woman on fivelive who's currently on maternity leave, thank goodness.

Don't know what bbc radio are thinking but I've turned off completely.
