Simon Mayo Drivetime - Latest

Like many people, I've signed the petitions and complained to the BBC about the changes to the Simon Mayo Drivetime programme...or rather the complete decimation of it.

In the end, I wrote to Whistledown...the people who make the Radio 4 Feedback programme. They are the only ones to respond and they has said that the recent changes will be covered in their programme on Friday 15th. They want me to read out some of my complaint which of course I'm more than happy to do Grin.

So if you've given Jo Whiley and Simon Mayo Show time to 'settle in' (the BBC's words not mine) and still want the Drivetime show and team back, now may be the time to write to the Radio 4 Feedback programme. The links are:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006slnx/contact
or
[email protected]

Please spread the word and see if we can get the Drivetime team back where they belong Smile

Not a listener but what are you all going to do when Simon Mayo decided he wants to retire?

MiniCooperLover · 14/06/2018 07:58

Even Simon Mayo sounds fed up with it, Jo Whiley is incredibly unnatural when talking to people but I fear others are right. This is to prep for when they boot Mayo out and keep Whiley 😣

peeseandchickle · 14/06/2018 08:01

Chris Evans has obv been drafted in to "help" as he's saying this morning that ooh he listened for the first time last night and isn't it a great show, took time to bed in but it's really great and it won't be everyone's cup of tea but bla bla blahhhhh. Load of rubbish. It wasn't broken and didn't need fixing.

MrsMozart · 14/06/2018 08:01

MyName Hopefully they'll come up with a good replacement.

It's not the change per se, it's that it's now such a crap show: I would still have been sad to lose Drivetime as was, but a good show would've made up for it.

KermitsLoveChild · 14/06/2018 08:03

Chris Evans' comments were cringeworthy and it was very obvious he's been drafted in to try and gather support for the new Drivetime show.

I gave up listening to Simon after a week or so, the new format is just awful.

sluj · 14/06/2018 08:07

When is the "feedback" show broadcast please?

MrsMozart · 14/06/2018 08:08

Balony the first time Chris Evans has heard it. He's so into his world that I'd be majorly surprised if he doesn't have a good knowledge of all the, at least prime time, slots.

I have no axe to grind and no expectations that it shouldn't have changed just because I liked it as was. I'd be as happy as Larry if it had 'bedded in' and improved, but it hasn't and the BBC, instead of listening to what seems like the vast majority of the listeners think, is ploughing ahead, sending out trite soundbites and seemingly saying we [listeners] don't know what we like.

mrsreynolds · 14/06/2018 08:08

Just sent a message thanks

Just heard Chris Evans comments...how cringe worthy!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/06/2018 08:09

It wasn't broken and didn't need fixing.. I did listen to Simon May’s show but it wasn’t perfect and it was getting a little stale. I’ve given the new show a few tries and it’s awful. However decided to put two presenters together who are so awkward neess sacking. Have they never listened to Radcliffe and Marconi to see how it’s done?

Also agree that Sara Cox needs to be on the Breakfast Show. I only ever listen if Chris Evans is on holiday. Jonathon Ross was great recently in the afternoon show but it would probably be too much of a commitment for him to do full time.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/06/2018 08:10

*whoever

WhipItGood · 14/06/2018 08:10

he must have said "serious jocking" at least 4 times - what a fucking relic

Isn’t that Jockin’ without the G? 😉 I agree 1000% about SW. why why why is he still doing that show? Surely he was destined for the mumblin’ around midnight slot years ago.

CowParsley2 · 14/06/2018 08:11

They wouldn't boot Mayo out would they?Shock

He,Sara Cox and Graham Norton are the best three on Radio 2.

Why aren't they dealing with Steve Wright,Ken Bruce or Chris Evans?Hmm

It's bonkers.

You've made dp' morning op.Grin He's been gutted re Driverime.

fruitpastille · 14/06/2018 08:12

I'm glad it's on feedback but I'm not holding my breath. The BBC obviously think they know best.

I actually found some of the old drive time a bit annoying and I'm not even that bothered about 'the team' as such but I really like Simon Mayo's sardonic style and it completely clashes with Jo Wiley's perky slightly fake enthusiasm. Neither of them seem to be enjoying features such as end of days of you ask me. If Jo replaces Simon I won't be listening any more.

Shampaincharly · 14/06/2018 08:13

I loved Jo’s show, and Simon’s drivetime BUT together they do not work.

AnnPerkins · 14/06/2018 08:14

YouStacey you nailed Friday Drivetime 😀 I find it unlistenable too.

I only listen to 6 Music and R4 now.

EeeSheWasThin · 14/06/2018 08:15

Sluj half four on Friday. Not something I normally listen to but I might this week! I’m not a regular listener to Drivetime so it’s not as bad for me, but the odd occasion I’m in the car at that time I’ve tried and do not like it at all.

pissedrightoff1 · 14/06/2018 08:17

Thank you for the link , I have just sent a message,
agree that it sounds like local radio, so forced and amateurish

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 14/06/2018 08:19

Steve Wright must have some serious dirt on someone high up at R2 as his show should’ve been binned off a long long time ago.

Agree 100% with @YouStacey

Isabella1978 · 14/06/2018 08:21

@JobbyBum oh seconded from me! I have to switch the radio off when Nihal comes on as he is utterly useless.
Bring back Simon Mayo to 5Live!!!GrinGrin

YearOfYouRemember · 14/06/2018 08:22

This has reminded me how much I dislike the woman doing Any Answers on Radio 4. She uses 50 words when five will do and barely gives the caller chance to answer Angry.

Thereshegoesagain · 14/06/2018 08:28

And Sundays. Sundays are just not listenable. The person that listens to Chris Evans is not the same person ( or generation)that listens to Elaine bloody Paige.
It is such a juxtaposition to the rest of the week.

54321go · 14/06/2018 08:44

The BBC has always been a weird institution that 'knows best'.
I have commentaries written complaining of their 'weirdness' from 1944 (albeit on a technical theme).
What the BBC did do right was the World service which at least used to be the best and most reliable broadcast information around the world with relatively little bias. The respect for it by people of other countries was significant and the good it did for the UK was palpable. Cutting back on the WS was a huge mistake which has lost a lot of respect for Britain worldwide.

54321go · 14/06/2018 08:46

I now find it difficult to bother to put Radio 2 on and definitely 1 or 3 (wrong demographic as I am not teenage or dead).

Ruffian · 14/06/2018 09:00

Isabella1978 and JobbyBum - can I join the mini petition to get rid of Nihal? He truly is the male counterpart of Jo Whiley, no skill with people, no humour, no insight and yet he's on for hours and hours of airtime in the week.
I still really miss Richard Bacon in that slot - whatever people thought of him personally his show was funny and interesting and really sharp.

Anyway. Just a word of warning about that Feedback show - it's well presented so I often listen but it seems to be treated with contempt by The Powers That BBC. It generally consists of listeners complaints about poor decisions and arbitrary changes being met with either 'we asked a representative of the show for an interview but no one was available' - i.e we don't give a shit what you think - or a representative coming on to tell listeners that they just don't like change and they'll get used to it

peeseandchickle · 14/06/2018 09:32

54321go - try radio 6. Sometimes the music can be a bit Hmm but generally it's good quality.
